It’s time for a little update on… many things.
It’s progressing, slowly but surely. Our teams, both in France and Malaysia (Inspidea) are working hard to make the best show they can.
If possible, I’ll try to tease you from time to time about it… Anyway, you’ll see more of our princesses very soon !
Surprisingly, this question seems to matter for a lot of you. I receive a lot of question about “Who updates it ?” and more specifically, “Is it director Vandestoc ?? And can we consider it’s Jean-Louis Vandestoc’s official blog ?”.
Well, no. It’s not Jean-Louis’ official tumblr, and he’s not the one writing here either. He reads and helps me from time to time though, but he’s very busy with season 2 right now.
I’m one of the supervising producers of the show and I work very closely with Jean-Louis, ever since I joined the team at the beginning of the production. Just call me “Production Guy” or “Loliprod Guy”, whatever. No need for more. I like my privacy. ;)
I asked in a previous post what you guys would like for the next ones. Here’s the new guidelines we’ll follow :

A little WIP/Sneak Peek into my Lolirock dress up game! (feat. an unfinished Praxina) This is just to show off the three pages i’ve got done coding, and some of the things you can do on them!
Right now I’m working on all the different bangs and hair options, then I can work on outfits. I’m also going to make it so you can make at least 2 other characters, that way you can have a whole team! I may add more if there’s room.
Wow! Looking good! My only suggestion is to include more skin tones. You have several pale skin tones but only one brown one.

When it was decided the princesses had a band, and would have regular concert, we wanted them to have their own unique stage. And, while we were on it, we decided to make it a magical one.
In term of story, it would be cooler and more practical : the girls could summon it at the last minute, and we would be able to do a concert everywhere ! That’s basically what happens at the end of episode 107 - Sirens, when the girls have their concert right on the wreck of the S.S.Valentino (which, by the way, is probably a little unsafe. Rust and dust and other things like that).
However, summoning it in front of people is kind of a big shot, and it’s harder to pretend “eh, it’s normal ! It’s part of the show !”. I mean, who’d believe it ? People in Sunny Bay are already way too confortable with the daily-crystal-bizarre stuff that’s happening in their town, and we felt summoning too often the stage would really be pushing it to the point our audience wouldn’t like it anymore. So we tried to be careful with it, and only use the summon on already extraordinary situations (’cause when you magically raise a cruise boat, who cares you summon a little stage ?)
As you perhaps noticed, there are two types of concert : Inside (BFF / We Are Magic / Celebrate), and Outside (Revolution / Higher), yet the stage remain the same : In term of production, creating this “one only” stage, and sticking with it, was what allowed us to create the clips and easily insert them into the episodes. We could change (to a limit) what was around the stage (like in the example above with the boat), but not much more. Without the stage itself, we probably would have needed to change the whole background on each episode, meaning “no reuse”, which would have been really expensive. We had to be a little smarter and avoid it. :)

In may 2011, the producers at Marathon Media (newly Zodiak Kids) asked to a bunch of designers to draw IRIS, a teenage alien princess with ice/crystal power, for the project “MAGICAL GIRLS”. The first picture is the result of my test. the fashion reference sure was “le blog de Betty” ! and I wanted a dark hair heroin to change from the blonde heroin everlasting cliché. I tried pop and girly colors like Katy Perry. I made a blonde version, though, cause I did KNOW the producers will exclusively like a blonde. reference is Little J (Taylor Momsen, not a Pretty Reckless gothic punk yet) from the tv series “GOSSIP GIRL”. you know the rest : they picked the blonde one. And they were passionate about star shape in the eyes. At this stage of the development, we were no longer only two designers shortlisted. Then, i was asked to create princess/rockstar outfit. But first, I fell in love with a pic of Blake Lively wearing a green dress (later I was told that green isn’t a good color in the girl’s merchandising industry. and the heroin had to be blonde with blue eyes and wear pink…). I introduced here the idea that Iris should have a magical alien pet (maybe a cat like in Sailor Moon) that could always be with her, transformed into a keyring plush attached to her bag. the character of Amaru was born. While searching colors, i tried pink hairs for fun. and loved it ! so I suggested to make different steps for hair transformations, with a colored strand when rockstar. That leads us to the fact we had to separate the rockstar thing from the magical-princess-warrior thing. Princess-like big dress is great for a toy but it will be a pain in the ass in an animation process. I proposed then an other kind of magical-warrior-princess outfit. and tried some magical accessories, with FX :-) With this last drawing, the producers chose me to be the character creator on the “MAGICAL GIRLS” project !
