Coming on tumblr dot gov dot org once again like „I wonder if there‘s anything in the Egils saga Einhenda ok Ásmundr Berserkjabana fandom tag“ like I haven‘t checked this several times already and received fuck all. Become a linguist they said. Learn Old Norse they said. Translate some Sagas to stay in practise they said.

Dr. Crawford I hope you know that when you suggested a really obscure saga that you doomed me. You n me are the only two people who know about these Blorbos, apparently. Like I have only one chapter left to translate so theoretically I could then put my translation up for people to read and maybe get literally anyone else into these boys.

Anyone want to read a freshly English‘d saga? I promise it‘s very good I‘m obsessed

Very quick and hopefully spoiler free teaser:

It has giants, it has adventure, it has „best friends“ who swear their lives to one another. It has duels to the death. It has a zombie moment (well, aptrganga, but he‘s very zombie-like, you‘ll see). It has a magic dwarf smith who crafts a new weapon for one of our heroes. It has an entire several-chapter tangent plotline where a giantess tells our heroes about her trip to the actual underworld. Over porridge. It has kidnapped princesses! About whom everyone keeps forgetting lol („hang on, weren‘t we on a quest?“ „uuuh. Oh right the trolls kidnapped those girls!“ „shit it‘s been like two years, man“).

Oh and did I mention the title translates to „the Saga of Egil One-Hand and Osmund Berserker-slayer“? Egil loses a hand and gains a fuckin sword arm and I will draw this soon so please stand by bc it fucking rules.

It was a pretty late addition to the canon of Norse Sagas, probably composed around the 1400s- rather than the 1200s of our boy Snorri (dw I will put some proper sources and organise my notes in the intro to the translation when it‘s done) and it has some incredible fantasy vibes- it feels very Princess Bride, and it‘s a fun swashbuckling tale of two „bros“ going through the weirdest series of bonkers magic shenanigans you‘ve seen and conquering it all with the power of gay love friendship and this massive fucking anchor I‘m about to smash a guy‘s head with (they have just so many whacky battle scenes)

part of my job as archivist for a LGBTQ center involves working with an interviewing elder queers, and the disconnect between our generation and theirs is so upsettingly palpable. so many young queers think that elders aren’t up-to-date on identity politics and are “set in their ways” when it comes to understanding the nuances of gender and sexuality, but that is so incredibly far from the truth.

if anything, the real problem is in the reverse. young queers aren’t giving the time of day to our elders and its only alienating all of us from our shared history. just about every elder I’ve spoken to is doing their best to understand how our identity politics have evolved and is actively supportive of our generation adding our language and experiences to our sprawling rainbow tapestry.

there is also this strange idea that elder queers no longer contribute to that tapestry, that their time is gone and its only the youth making progress. but again, that prevailing idea is just alienating our generations from one another. most elders I’ve spoken to are extremely active in the community and work hard to do what they can to preserve our histories and assist in current activism.

the fact of the matter is that we are losing our elders, both to time and estrangement, and it is critical that we make conscious efforts to bridge the gap before its too late.

TLDR: We have to do better when it comes to including queer elders in our current activism. They are our history, they are our family, and we need to give them the same love they give to us.

For some reason the terfs found this post so this is me firing gunshots into the air. This post is not safe for you. Terfs are tar pits and community killers and there is no room for them in my activism.

one of the things I cherish about Dungeon Meshi is how loving and respectful Ryoko Kui is towards her characters with bigger body frames and/or characters who weigh more.

They're presented as beautiful and normal, without ever crossing over into fetishization. It makes me feel so hopeful that representation and acceptance of fat people and fat characters is possible <3

as newspapers today dont tend to hire children, a modern day Tintin would run a clickbait YouTube channel, except the clickbait is 100% real every single time

he starts off as an irritating conservative pundit at 14, meets Chang then leaves the think tank paying him and launches his own independent channel and blows up shortly after. Chang helps with video editing and managing his socials and they often chat on video calls between adventures. Haddock, his foster dad, has absolutely no knowledge of his earlier videos.

These things are made of garbage and glue and they want to charge this much for them??? Seriously considering just buying some real wood and making it myself. We tolerate this chipboard crap BECAUSE IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE INCREDIBLY AFFORDABLE.

My cousins recently bought an extending table from a hardwood place, only to find out that the extension bit in the middle was not hardwood but actually some cheap material blend (I can’t remember what unfortunately).

When they complained they were told that it had to be this other material because you just can’t make that kind of table out of hardwood.

In my house right now there is a table from the late 19th century that folds out the same way as my cousins table and it is made from hardwood we have the technology for goodness sake’s.

the quality decline of the everything needs to die, I need to kill it with my fists.

While I also mourn the decline in quality and specifically sturdiness of objects over time (damn plastic), it's not always true that because something existed in the past, it means we know how to make it now. Techniques get lost if no one writes them down/craftspeople don't pass them on. Two very old examples are Roman concrete (which i still don't think we have totally solved) and a blue ink used in manuscripts called folium (only very recently rediscovered how to make it), but I'm sure there are more recent ones as well.

I'm dead certain that we have not lost the art of cutting hardwood planks

Some good news in these dark times. Scottish Parliament have overwhelmingly backed the Safe Access Zones bill for abortion services at stage 1.

Bill aims to provide a safe buffer area for those accessing abortion services. Anti-abortion protestors wouldn’t be permitted to ‘protest’ within the zones.

Where MSPs will begin to disagree in later stages is whether to grant an exception to those engaging in ‘silent prayer’. It’ll be spun as criminalising thoughts.

If you’re anti-choice, you can silently pray in your own home. You do not need to intimidate vulnerable people accessing health services.

If grandmothers around the world had a rallying cry, it would probably sound something like “You need to eat!”

Photographer Gabriele Galimberti’s grandmother said something similar to him before one of his many globetrotting work trips. To ensure he had at least one good meal, she prepared for him a dish of ravioli before he departed on one of his adventures.

“In that occasion I said to my grandma ‘You know, Grandma, there are many other grandmas around the world and most of them are really good cooks,” Galimberti wrote via email. “I’m going to meet them and ask them to cook for me so I can show you that you don’t have to be worried for me and the food that I will eat!’ This is the way my project was born!”

The project, “Delicatessen With Love”, took Galimberti to 58 countries where he photographed grandmothers with both the ingredients and finished signature dishes.

He acted as photographer and stylist during each shoot with the grandmothers, taking a portrait of both the women and the food they made for him.

From top to bottom:

Inara Runtule, 68, Kekava, Latvia. Silke €(herring with potatoes and cottage cheese). Grace Estibero, 82, Mumbai, India. Chicken vindaloo.

Susann Soresen, 81, Homer, Alaska. Moose steak.

Serette Charles, 63, Saint-Jean du Sud, Haiti. Lambi in creole sauce.

The photographer’s grandmother Marisa Batini, 80, Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy. Swiss chard and ricotta Ravioli with meat sauce.

Normita Sambu Arap, 65, Oltepessi (Masaai Mara), Kenya. Mboga and orgali (white corn polenta with vegetables and goat).

Julia Enaigua, 71, La Paz, Bolivia. Queso Humacha (vegetables and fresh cheese soup).

Fifi Makhmer, 62, Cairo, Egypt. Kuoshry (pasta, rice and legumes pie).

Isolina Perez De Vargas, 83, Mendoza, Argentina. Asado criollo (mixed meats barbecue).

Bisrat Melake, 60, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Enjera with curry and vegetables.

here’s the updated link, the project is now called “in her kitchen”

RE that post about Scottish Standard English from a while back, what's the issue with writing dialogue phonetically?

Because it’s painful to read and comes across as a bit disrespectful when someone is trying to write a Scottish character but doesn’t care to try and learn Scots language.

Scots Wikipedia was basically sabotaged by an idiot American teenager who just wrote it phonetically.

"Funetik Aksent" from AllTheTropes.Org (permalink)

Most importantly, though, it assumes that there is a single "correct" way to speak English, which is certainly not true [...] The Funetik Aksent is often used to imply that the accented characters are less educated, less intelligent, or less literate than the reader or the protagonist. A classic example of this is Gone with the Wind, where the black slaves' and poor whites' accents are given phonetically, but the white owners' accent (which is every bit as thick) isn't. The implication is that the slave owners' language is proper English, while the slaves and poor whites just aren't smart enough to speak properly [...] since standard English is not spelled phonetically, a Funetik Aksent can be used to give the impression of an uneducated speaker even when the pronunciation is perfectly standard (as with the name of this trope) [...] some readers will read such implications into texts written in a form of Funetik Aksent regardless of whether the author actually intended them or not.

The above excerpt focuses on the English language; the problem applies to many other languages.

Thanks for sharing, that’s definitely part of it

More English local election news, the Women’s Equality Party won their first ever seat.

This is made all the more funny because they’re pro trans rights, while Kelly-Jay Keen/Posie Parker’s transphobic Party of Women received a hilariously low number of votes in every seat they stood in.

Prepare for the next general election by applying for a Voter Authority Certificate. It’s free, and is now required to vote.

People with driving licenses, passports etc don’t need one.

Do you think Scotland could do with some improved infrastructure before independence? I'm not as familiar so idk if it's similar to what's up with Wales where a lot of infrastructure is tied heavily to English infrastructure.

Avatar

I think there's always infrastructure work that could be done, at a basic level I want the railway lines extended although that rests of Network Rail's shoulders (Not ScotGov operated).

Would also be good to see some of the roads up north being worked on.

Personally I think Scotland should have invested in a grand infrastructure project like Norway did. We could connect islands with tunnels and all that fun stuff. Not sure if it's possible now, but it'd be pretty cool.

Do you know much about Swinney's policies? I'm having a hard time finding much about his voting record online, he seems to be more of a gradualist to independence rather than pushing for a second referendum, and I'm worried about his possible views on trans people with the amount of transphobes in government at the moment

Avatar

Yeah that was partly what I meant when I said he's quite cautious. He's definitely more on the gradualist side of things, although there's been an issue recently with gradualism basically meaning 'do bugger all' instead of tangible goals to work towards.

He's supportive of gender recognition reform as far as I'm aware. The Scottish/British press are currently throwing a tantrum because he's not ruled out a push for gender recognition reform.

That being said, I don't know for sure if he'll just take the road with the least amount of conflict. Something that's annoyed me with the SNP recently, far too conflict-averse.
