It's easy to give up on
maple keys, sun firing down.
In the end we do what love tells us --
we get up again and again and again
until we can't. And
some night are like that.

In 1917, a factory in New Jersey exposed its young, working class (mostly) female workers to radiation poisoning.

The factory had supplied them with radio active luminous paint (commercially known as ‘undark’) which they used repeatedly throughout the working day to color clock and watch faces.

They became known by the media as ‘The radium girls".

The workers believed that the paint was not in any way dangerous, a belief that was encouraged by the company that employed them. They applied the product as a cosmetic on themselves and each other - often substituting it as nail polish and makeup for fun. Their employers, however, would suit up to handle the product, knowing full well its effects. The girls suffered the effects of radiation poisoning, most suffering and dying painfully.

La historia de las Radium Girls (Chicas del Radio).

Seguramente muchos conocereis la historia, pero quizás otros no y puede que les resulte interesante;

Five of the women had filed lawsuit a year before and had come to be known as "the Radium Girls." After a very public trial, U.S. Radium settled and each of the five "Radium Girls" received $10,000 plus $600 every year they were alive, along with coverage for all hospital and legal expenses. They all died within a few short years. In the documentary Radium Citya story about the Radium Dial Company, an old man with a Geiger counter saunters over to the Catholic graveyard where many of the Radium Girls of the town were buried. As his Geiger counter confirms, their corpses are still radioactive.

And so they come back, those girls who painted the watch dials luminous and died. They come back and their hands glow and their lips and hair and their footprints gleam in the past like alien snow. It was as if what shone in them once had broken free and burned through the cotton of their lives. And I want to know this: how they came to believe that something so beautiful could ever have turned out right, but though they open their mouths to answer me, all I can hear is light.
