Honestly the problem with Assassin’s Creed’s female protagonists is that it’s so blatantly obvious they’re constantly trying to have their cake and eat it too.
I think it was circa Unity when people started to notice that Assassin’s Creed had yet to have female protagonists in its major titles. Thanks in no small part to that whole “We can rebuild Notre Dame so well that people actually use it for reference when it burns but WOMEN are too hard to animate” argument that falls apart on the slightest scrutiny. And from that point onward, every single major game has toyed with the idea of having a female protagonist but never actually committed to it.
Oh hey, you can play as a pair of male and female assassin twins and switch whenever you want (so you only have to play her on mandatory missions and DLC)! Oh hey, our next protagonist is also a guy but sometimes you play as his wife! Oh hey, our protagonist is canonically a woman, praise us for it, but we’re gonna rig a whole Bioware set-up so you can play as her brother, in defiance of every pre-existing rule we ever had on how genetic memory works and fundamentally breaking the idea of any sort of canon! Player choice is super important to us now that we might be forced to play a woman! Praise us for our strong representation!
Like….you are so determined to find every possible way to get that ‘representation’ brownie points while making sure your fanbase doesn’t have to play any icky girls, and my guess is that they’re gonna use this new choice mechanic to avoid ever having a straight up female Assassin protagonist in a major title while still claiming to have them. I’m not giving you credit for Kassandra being the ‘real’ protagonist when you re-designed your entire game system to make sure she never had to be acknowledged as such!
