every time i see that picture of my chemical romance with a mariachi band backstage, and people going “lol mcr with a mariachi band” because they don’t know the context of that pic, it’s fucking hilarious.
so, here’s the story behind that pic.
it was during the black parade tour (2007).
they toured with muse. and muse was the opening act, believe it or not. along with “the black parade” as a second opening act. meaning, they would perform the album in its entirety as the fictional band themselves… something i’ve seen younger fans of the band suggest time after time: ”guys, can you imagine if they were to tour and play the black parade on full? that’d be so cool”.
it happened, kids. it happened.
the bill was muse, the black parade, and then my chemical romance. even on the tickets it showed them as a separate band:
yes, that there is my ticket for that gig.
it was the san antonio date, when the mariachi band came onstage with them. and, not to be a downer, but it was the day virginia tech happened and i remember waking up to the news. it was terrifying (i was in college at the time).
the band, my chemical romance, took a moment during the concert to pay respect to those who lost their lives that day (a moment of silence), and they decided to play one of the album’s b-sides to honor them (“heaven help us”).
it was a strange day.
as for the story behind the mariachi band, here’s what happened.
it was the birthday of one of their friends, one of their touring band mates (i apologize, i don’t recall the guy’s name). they brought a small piñata onstage and they broke it, as you do. they had cake, too, and frank destroyed that cake and threw it into the audience… in good frank iero fashion.
the mariachi band played happy birthday (las mañanitas) and after the small celebration was over, things continued. the show went on. i can only assume they took the picture either after the concert or after this little celebration.
anyway, it was a cool gig. and here i found some footage of it just now, never searched for it before.
this was the first of the two times i got to see my chem in concert. the second time was the following year, when they played in small venues again (it shocked us all, trust me, specially because we didn’t have to travel out of town that time around; they played stubb’s, in austin texas, the outdoor venue. it was fun, too.) while the black parade tour was a grand, “larger than life” arena band tour.
i might write a little more, later, about my concert stories. lol maybe more about my my chem stories (back then, after they broke up/solo projects, etc). maybe.
I have decided that the reason why miss americana is less than two hrs is because when taylor steps out to perform ready for it, you’re actually meant to take that as a cue to go watch the reputation stadium tour (Netflix, 2018) before continuing with the rest of the movie
