So on December 11th I got my first tattoo. It reads “Life has a hopeful undertone” taken from the song Migraine by Twenty One Pilots.
Over the past couple of years I’ve felt trapped in a society that I didn’t belong. I felt ostracised and abandoned by my friends after moving more than 300 miles away from my home town. When all hope seemed to have faded, I found a new light and a new passion through design and Motion Graphics. Through that I discovered the music of Twenty One Pilots. I partly owe it to them that I am still here today and to commemorate that magnificent accomplishment, I designed and tattooed some of my favourite lyrics of theirs onto my left forearm.
The tattoo represents many things. Firstly, the placement of the text is located on my none dominant arm and therefore weaker than my other. This is cohesive to my mindset and how weak I once was. Secondly, the lyrics are a consistent reminder to myself that life isn’t always shitty. There are amazing but also equally devastating chapters that we all just have to keep reading through, no matter how complex the story gets, even if you get lost. Sometimes it gets to the point where you feel forced to do certain things to make you feel better, or express a suppressed emotion but occasionally there are times where all you can do is smile and laugh. In the sad times you have to always remember that without sad, there would be no standard for happy.
Life has a hopeful undertone, you just have to make the effort to find it.

This image was taken (December 12th 2014) exactly 23 hours after completion and is still swollen and leaking ink. The type looks wonky (in this image) and out of line but I can assure you that’s just the shape of my arm plus the swelling distorting it. I will post follow up images in 2+ weeks to show you the tattoo in all it’s glory.
If you want any information about caring for tattoos or simply want some controversy cleared up about product use, feel free to send me an ask!
The design was created by myself in Adobe Illustrator CC and was directly printed onto a tattoo stencil to ensure the type kerning was perfect. The fonts used were “Avenir” for the thin type and “Avenir Next” for the bold type.
If anyone would like this design or any other lyrics in this same style, send me an ask and we can sort something out.
Future tattoos I’m considering:
[Note: these designs were never finished and the kerning is not perfect as I had no need to finish them]
