Logic behind Steampunk Fiction, Computer Fiction and Electricity Fiction
Steampunk has become one of the most admirable fantasies for the innovative minds in the western world. This fantasy revolves around the Victorian Era. The incidents, which you read in the punk literature or watch in the punk films, are set in the scenario of the era of Queen Victoria but are not confined to it. You can clearly watch the people wearing the dresses of that era with the addition of modern innovation in the movies, which we know today as ‘steampunk clothing’. This genre began with novels of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne of the same era, which was adopted later on by various modern science fiction writers. A strange fact about every punk novel is that all the technology runs on the steam power. Time machines, spacecrafts, gears, gadgets and every other thing you find are the advanced forms of steam energy.
Now, the question arises what is the logic behind it? Why Victorian writers do not think about the other technologies? Answer is very simple; however we need to see the example of some modern science fiction in order to understand it properly. That era belonged to steam engines. Steam was the largest source of energy during that period. So, it was very difficult to put the imagination beyond that.
Let’s take the example of some modern science fiction or researches. We all know that the electricity and computer are the biggest technologies of this era. Now, you can see that everything in the modern fiction runs on these technologies. There are complete possibilities that humanity may witness some more technologies, which we couldn’t imagine as yet.
We can take some modern science fiction films as examples. In films like “Sound of Thunder” and “Deja Vu", the time machine runs on the computer system, on the contrary to the Wells’ famous novel “The Time Machine”. Similarly, the famous science fiction ‘teleportation’ is dependent on electricity in the modern fiction. Teleportation is the fiction, in which a person disappears and reaches another place within a second. According to the modern perception, a person’s body is converted into light or electricity, in order to make it reach another place. But, there is complete possibility to have some better technology than electricity and light in the future, which may be used in teleportation.
Similarly, the Victorian authors fantasized everything running on steam. But, their innovation was so brilliant that it attracted the modern writers and film makers. They continued the trend and carried on imagining the steam-based technology. This imaginary technology fascinated the today’s common man also. The influence of this concept can be witnessed in various art forms today. Various paintings, sculptures and many other forms can be witnessed in the steampunk style today. The steampunk costumes are the best example in this respect.
