My girlfriend has specifically asked me what I would like for my birthday and now I am ridiculously out of ideas. She has a very good income so expense is no issue, although i don't want to seem greedy. Any ideas? I love your sense of style and taste in things. x
Gifting is always such a personal thing so unless you want to give me any specifics to go on, I can only answer in a broad sense of things I might like to receive that I believe could be of someone else’s taste too…
✨ Seeing as Autumn is upon us, I’m on the lookout for a new hat, probably a beret again in a new colour and because I like to be a bit matchy matchy with my outfits (or at least try to be!) I’ll also be trying to match the hat to a similar colour scarf too so it looks like a set. Anything buttery soft and warm! I think this would be a lovely and practical present… ❄️
✨ Another thing that I would personally love to get right now would be some more dainty stud earrings. I’ve been hunting for ages on etsy for different kinds of studs, either sold as a pair or as a single, so I can at some point find a bunch that go together really nicely. For example, I have 5 piercings in my ears in total (2 on one ear, 3 on the other) and I’d really like to gather 5 different types / designs that can become a nice set to wear together in a minimal, everyday sense! Right now I’m looking at these daggers, clover shapes, moon and evil eye … 🍀
✨ Personally, I would love some luxe Laura Mercier bathing and body products right about now!! because colder months = taking lots of warming baths and embalming myself in lots of lotions and creams… I am really clinging on to the last remains of my pot of creme brulee souffle cream which smells so edible, believe me!! they’re rather an indulgent spend but so dreamy and relaxing. The Ambre vanille honey bath would be so perfect for winter… and I wish I hadn’t just seen that they do perfumes too…. hmm 🍯
✨ Candles! from brands like Byredo, Diptyque, Laduree, White Company, Malin + Goetz, Le Labo, Overose, Jo Malone, Bella Freud… then once you finish them, use as storage pots for coffee tables / dressing tables, window ledge etc 🕯️
✨ Lastly, if you’re a book worm like me, you can discover some really interesting old finds on worldofbooks.com browsing through their ‘rare’ section, lots of nice fashion and art books from the last century and not even at crazy prices… 📚
Shopping Lace on Aliexpress, Part 1: General Advice
a great way to get more mori pieces is to thrift more plain clothes and embellish them with lace, or sew your own pieces! handmade and upcycled stuff is a great touch in mori. however, buying lace in physical shops can be way too expensive, and if you need multiple layers, like we mori people love, and/or hems of wide skirts, like we also love, the lace length adds up to a hefty cost.
a much less expensive option is to buy lace off aliexpress! if you can tolerate the wait for delivery, you can save a bunch of money and still get really pretty lace! this post is some general advice, some things i have noticed shopping for lace on aliexpress. there will be a second part to this post, with links to shops and honest opinions (hopefully by that time my lace package currently on the way will arrive and i will be able to review it!)
tip 1: find the lace you want
we are looking for the kinds of natural looking lace that i see on mori pieces.
lace like this, knit from cotton, is usually listed as “cotton lace”:
and lace like that, light, airy embroidered with a pattern, is listed as “embroidery lace”, sometimes misspelled as “embroid lace”:
lace like that, also embroidered, but on a cotton base, i see listed as “cotton fabric lace” or “cotton embroidered lace”.
little lace appliques like that would be listed as a “patch”.
lace stores will often have sections named these names i listed. that is where you look!
tip 2: open the listings
cant seem to find the lace to your liking? want a color besides white or cream? open the listings with multiple laces in one pic that you see in the searches/suggestions, look at the color/kind selection, and you may be surprised. for reasons i personally do not understand aliexpress sellers often tend to squeeze dozens of kinds of lace of similar widths into one listing with a color select, and then show only about half of the selection on the listing pictures. here is an example of the pictures on the lace listing:
and this is the color selection when i open it:
wow! suddenly theres heaps more kinds of laces! there are color options! alas, searching by (color name) lace does not give much results, sellers tend to not list em in the titles. so, dear mori folk who want browns, mossy greens, berry tones, dear dark mori folk who look for blacks and greys and deep earthy colors, and dear hama folk who want sea blues - you will have to peek into every listing manually. yes, this sucks. but the savings are worth it.
tip 3: you could dye some laces!
still cant find the right color? like to dye fabrics for your diy projects? you can dye some white laces to match! there is never a shortage on kinds of white lace. but since synthetic thread wont take to dyeing, opt for the “cotton lace” and the “cotton fabric lace” - but in the latter case, watch out for whether the embroidery thread is also cotton or a synthetic one.
tip 4: careful with measurements!
for reasons also unknown, aliexpress sellers like to measure lace in not metres but yards. sometimes you will even find one seller listing some laces in metres and the others in yards.🤔 so check carefully whether the price is per metre or per yard. some listings are priced per 2 yards or per 5 yards, too!
tip 5: for when you dont need to be careful with measurements
want some lace, but not in an exact measurement for a project? say, you are making accessories, which take up small bits of lace, or using irregular pieces of lace (instead of, say, sewing it on all the hem) to decorate your clothes, for example, like this?
then, check out the mixed bags of laces many stores sell! there is usually a total length and average width of the lace specified, but that length will be comprised of random pieces of lace with not exact measurements, likely remainders that cant be cut to an exact size for other orders anymore (read the reviews to see how long on average are lace pieces in the mixed bag!) these are usually affordable for a good value! these will usually have that set length and “random” or “mixed” in the titles. here is an example of what i am talking about. the photos provide an example of what laces to expect. look at the photos in the reviews to see what other laces people have got from it.
tip 6: layer different laces
suppose you are doing a hem of a dress/skirt with multiple rows of lace trim layered on it. pick laces with different embroidered patterns for each tier - that looks more eye catching and organic and less blocky than stacking multiple layers of the same pattern, and overall mori often mixes and matches patterns and textures!
2 purchase victories today! I bought a used nightstand, and I picked up a free white bookcase in my neighborhood! There was a family that was moving, so they put a bunch of stuff out on the curb that they weren’t going to take with them. I put my paper trimmer on top of the nightstand and my mailing scale on the shelf right below it. I’m planning to find some fabric cube drawers (used, of course!) for the shelf for some extra organization.
I did the gym’s 12:00 PM livestream workout (ow, my quads…) and a walking workout afterwards to cool down before my 1-1 chat with my boss.
I talked to my former boss on the phone for 30 mins after a group conference call we were on together.
No ribbing, barely any black thread, no black zippers, low stock on lining fabric, my favorite galaxy fabric was no where to be found… 😢
I’m not complaining lol, just saying.
Thankfully I was able to get enough of what I needed to make my Halloween bomber jacket (I went with purple for the lining, a dark purple zipper, glow-in-the-dark ghost print knit instead of ribbing, and the last, broken spool of black thread lol), but I wasn’t able to make any progress towards the galaxy jacket, so that one will have to wait.
And now I want to adapt the bomber jacket pattern for doll scale lol
I made it to the 9:00 AM parking lot workout. The weather was so nice! 😎 I did 5 x 5 of push presses at 70 lbs. For the WOD, I used a 10 lbs wall ball and 55 lbs for hang power cleans. The only times I was able to do 20 wall balls were the first and last rounds. 😰
Picked my order from Petco.
Picked up a Facebook Marketplace listing of Mega Blocks and other toys for my cousin’s kid. It was an awesome lot for $20! An early 1st birthday present for him. 🥳 🚗🚜🚚
Went to my cousin’s place to drop off the toys and then hung out at my parents’ house for a little bit.
how did you go about getting black flowers??? I rly want a little goth garden of my own but I’m not sure if I’d have to order them online or?
I believe dark coloured flower seeds and bulbs aren’t too hard to find if you go to a big-ish garden centre! I managed to pick up some seed packets for around £10 - £15 altogether? You can probably order them online too. Ebay is good for seed packets too, check out these babies and these give me big autumnal vibes 🎃🥀
There is a somewhat ridiculous, glorious luxury in wearing clothes you’ve just bought. New things that are only just becoming part of your story. New patterns, new textures, new ideas that are somehow comforting, despite being new. Things you didn’t know you needed, but contribute some form of happiness.
It’s silly, but I didn’t realise how much I missed my tartan pj bottoms until I got a new pair.
I keep almost hugging them. They’re so soft & kind & I’m so very glad for them.
Wish I could describe how settling, lovely, happy, warm it is to be able to just buy new things, knowing most of them were needed, some were just wanted, that it won’t immediately tip my bank balance into being *Insent Panic Siren Noises Here*
To have the space. The time. The feasibility. To go & do almost exactly as I wish. It’s the stuff of dreams.
