Not So Happily
Seokjin froze when you walked up to him, face quickly forming into a carefully neutral position by the time you were standing mere feet away.
Fingers twisting nervously, you look down at them before taking a deep and fortifying breath and extending one hand out to him. Swallowing, you turn your lips up into a bright smile and let the bubbling pot of do nerves and happiness overflow as you try to put your best foot forward.
“Hi, I’m err…I’m Y/N. Your erm…your soulmate.” You keep the words light and friendly, an aura of sweetness to them to show him that he can feel comfortable with you.
Because of course he can, he’s your soulmate. The one fate, destiny and life has determined is the perfect person to complement your life like the sweet, sugar frosting on an already delicious cake.
Seokjin pauses before carefully extending his hand and grasping your own, shaking it slowly.
The touch of his hand sparks warmth within you, your nerves crackling with energy and you get the strongest urge to touch him further. To let your hands wander and map the hidden wonders of his body until they create an atlas you can follow for pleasure or comfort.
“Hello. I’m Seokjin…Kim Seokjin.” His words are polite, and the careful nature of his tone has your brow creasing somewhat. The party carries on around you, loud and raucous laughter as if people don’t realise one of the most important moments of your life is happening right now.
“Oh I know, I’ve heard all about you,” Your cheeks heat with shy embarrassment as the words burst from your mouth without you meaning to. “Yoongi has told me all about you! He lives next door to me and likes to come over to eat. Apparently you like to cook as well?”
The question is in the hope of making the situation feel a little less awkward for him. While neither of you obviously expected to find each other tonight, it’s becoming obvious that Seokjin is being thrown for more of a loop than you are.
He pauses again, the moment brief but surprisingly loud in this sensory overload Jimin calls a party and your stomach turns suddenly. There’s something not right here; even if he was surprised about this whole thing he should be showing more enthusiasm than this.
Soul mates, you were going to spend the rest of your life together. And yet he’d shown more excitement for the tiny triangle sandwich Yoongi had given him before he’d turned around to see you.
“Yeah, I do. And err…Yoongi’s mentioned you too.” The crease between his brows tells you that he’s unhappy, and that emotions loops back into you until your stomach is positively nauseous.
Taehyung had been kissing his soulmate by this point!
“I’m sorry…you don’t seem very happy about all this” You feature between your bodies with a weak smile, the happiness you’d exhibited earlier slowly vanishing as alarm bells rang in your mind.
“Yeah…I…well. You’re not what I was expecting.”
It’s a simple sentence really. Eight syllables and only six words, yet it shattered something inside you as you felt overwhelming cold flood through your veins to numb out your feelings.
Fuzziness reigns in your head for a moment before you swallow, lips quirking awkwardly as a high pitched and fake laugh falls from your lips quickly.
Resting a hand against your chest, you can practically feel your racing heart through your hoodie and shirt. “Oh…is that…I mean…better than you expected? Or…worse?”
It hurts to get those words out and you hope desperately that he’ll laugh and apologise. Only he doesn’t.
In fact, he takes that knife in your heart and twists deeper as he hesitates once more, eyes scanning over your body quickly.
Swallowing thickly, you blink rapidly to try and rid yourself of the tears in your eyes that have formed like a flimsy shield. It’s harder to breathe suddenly, the heat of the party fighting hard with the crushing sense of disappointing and the overwhelming agony of a rejection that was truly soul deep.
Stepping back quickly, you try to give him another smile that doesn’t reveal your walls are crumbling. The awkward cringe he makes tells you it isn’t working.
“I’m guessing that wasn’t a compliment.” Looking down at your Converse clad feet, you nod quickly before continuing. “Sorry I’ve disappointed. I’d say you know where I live but…yeah.”
He doesn’t even respond as you turn on one heel and speed walk out of the party, unwilling to listen to the happiness of others there.
No one ever tells the stories of when soulmates go wrong. And now you know why.
