You can’t really appreciate bears in the zoo. In the wild bears are top predators. For most of human history, at least in northern latitudes or during the ice ages, humans and bears had an adversarial relationship. Bears are fierce and hard to kill even with high powered rifles. In the distant past there were huge bears and these bears competed with man for the same foods and for the same cave shelters.
To the bears we were food. Many human remains have been found in bear caves. Bears would take down a full grown man but, as the bones show, preferred smaller women and especially children.
Imagine hunting a bear with spears and arrows. You are not likely to kill a bear with arrows alone. It usually took a combination of arrows and spears. Often the bear would have to be lanced in close. We used dogs to keep the bear distracted. As a boy my father taught me how to kill a bear by shooting it in the shoulder by the neck. Your bullet would go through muscle and skin and into the vital organs. Bear skulls have been known to deflect bullets so head shots are usually ineffective. Their sides are heavily muscled and protected by thick ribs. A rearing bear is vulnerable at the belly.
If a bear could be killed it was a bonanza of food. Bears are one of the few animals when killed in winter have huge reserves of precious fat. This and a thick warm fur coat. Also brains for tanning, tender sweetmeats and lots of meat for smoking. Its liver, heart, kidneys and bone marrow would be consumed fresh. Its haunches would be smoked over green wood for several days. A full sized bear would feed a large extended family for a month. Bears were not viewed as game animals. They were considered “enemy warriors” and the hunter who brought the bear down got to wear its claws as a war honor.
uhhhh don’t mean to be a slut for suggesting this but like
after it rains, kapkan likes to go out to his lawn and dig around in the dirt for worms. he keeps them in a little jar and uses them as bait when he goes fishing. then at night, in his cozy fuckin cabin, he makes some nice pan fried trout and relaxes on his recliner, falls asleep with a wool blanket on his lap and his pet cat snoozing next to him
