After thinking about the SU movie, the fusion scene at the end of “Together Alone” and the newer Dove shorts, I’m thinking that Garnet, Stevonnie, and Opal are each a different portrayal of what a healthy romantic relationship looks like? They seem to be showcased together more and more.
Garnet is two very different people who grow from their differences and want to be as one forever as a testament to their love. Over the course of the show, they had to learn about how to be more themselves, and had to learn to face the truth about things together.
Opal is two very independent people who don’t share all the same interests who still love each other and like to spend time together, but they don’t always have to, nor want to, be as one all the time. They learned how to listen to each other and how to not rely on others as the only source of their self-worth and strength, so their increasing ease around each other and as Opal is a great sign that they’ve developed.
Stevonnie is a mix of both, and they’re still young. Each of them needs support, but also to develop separately. They also seem a bit more spontaneous in their intimacy and gain new perspective when fusing. Over time, they learned about getting through insecurities together and comforting each other.
