Paige VanZant Inspired by Mackenzie Dern, ‘It’s Really Inspiring’
Paige VanZant is inspired by a UFC star Mackenzie Dern after her lost last week.
The UFC star told TMZ Sports saying, “It’s really inspiring.”
Via TMZ Sports:
25-year-old VanZant says watching Dern fight “put things into perspective for me” about the reality of starting a family with her MMA fighter husband, Austin Vanderford, while maintaining a career as an MMA fighter.
“I always thought that I was going to have kids once I’m done fighting but now seeing that, I’m like no you don’t have to.”
“[Dern] legitimately, in the time I broke my arm, she had a baby, came back and fought. So, now I’m like okay there’s hope for me!”
“Me and my husband, I can have a few more fights, maybe have kids and then still continue to fight. I don’t have to give up my dreams, just because you go through childbirth.”
“It’s really inspiring and I hope other women can see that too. She’s still young and she’s going to have a really successful UFC career, it’s awesome.”
Paige also says people forget how BADASS it is to have a kid “It’s a very traumatic, intense experience. You can die giving birth. It’s a big deal. So, for her to go 4 months later and come back? That’s huge and inspirational.”
Mackenzie Dern knee bars Hannah Cifers in the first round
Not sure if Dern has gotten any better at MMA but at least she had a jab here. Cifers was able to wizarr her way out of a takedown attempt by Dern, who struggled in the clinch, but she stayed engaged with Dern on the mat and ended up getting her knee got.
Amanda Ribas out boxes the crap out of Mackenzie Dern for UD win
Yeah, a one sided win for Ribas. Despite being a well accomplished blackbelt herself, I think Ribas realized that the only place Dern was going to beat her was on the ground so she decided to fight “safely”. And by safely, I mean she out struck Dern something like 9-1. I’m not sure if Dern landed 15 strikes in the entire fight. Ribas has a nice set of tools that I think are going to make her a top ten fighter at strawweight at some point. Definitely room for improvement (would love to see more kicks out of her) but she’s on her way.
This was an odd one for Dern to come back from. Huge step up in competition coming off of pregnancy. Considering they really seem to want to push her, you’d think they’d give her someone a bit softer or at least more vulnerable to her style of fighting. This loss will probably be better for her in the long run though. She didn’t get run over, didn’t get caught, or out-athleted. She just got soundly outworked by a better opponent. If she’s taking this fight thing seriously now like she says she is, we should see a major jump in technical skill the next time we see her.
UFC’s MacKenzie Dern Explains on Fighting Four Months After Giving Birth: ‘I Was Prepared’
MacKenzie Dern is opening up on fighting four months after giving birth which she’s fighting tomorrow night.
The UFC star told TMZ Sports Friday saying, “I was prepared.”
Via TMZ Sports:
27-year-old Dern (7-1) ultimately lost the fight via unanimous decision – but now that she’s had time to reflect, we asked if she thinks she came back too soon.
“No, definitely not,” Dern says … “I felt good for the fight. I was prepared.”
“I lost but ya know I don’t think it was because it was too soon. I think Amanda was just better than me that night and she came out with the win and I came out with the loss and that’s it.”
“I don’t regret coming back at that time … I wish it was a win because then I could of maybe fought sooner again but I’m just happy to be able to be fighting now.”
Now, Dern is focusing her energy on Hannah Cifers (10-4) – they face off Saturday in Las Vegas at UFC Fight Night.
Dern – one of the top-ranked Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners in the world – says her goal is to take the fight to the ground and submit Cifers quickly, “and get home to go see my daughter with no cuts or bruises!”
