So, my 9 year old has decided he wants to be Loki for Halloween. Because the school is stupid and won’t have Literary Character Day, it has to be a Super Hero. So yes, he picked Loki. HA! ANYWAY, so they don’t make Loki costumes for kids. Unless I want to spend 200$. Which, I’d rather not. I know there’s a LOT of cosplayers around here and I was wondering if (not because I’m lazy, but because I’m at school 4 days a week and basically doing homework CONSTANTLY) anyone knew of any good tutorials, etc. Basically, Halloween is his cosplay night. So I can’t (and wouldn’t because ugh) hand him a green cape and some black clothes and be like, here.
Um can we just talk about how cool these would look together though?! Left is an IW Thor concept design that was unused; right is my own IW Loki design, with a black cape instead of green (face borrowed from actual concept art by @anthony_francisco_art). I’m sorely tempted to make a second cape for Extra Dramatic Effect.
As a writer you sometimes find yourself diving in subjects you never thought about before, and sometimes you just have a question which you can not answer. So my fellow Loki lovers, I’ve got a question:
What would Loki wear on Midgard if it wasn’t a suit but it still had to be stylish clothing?
So I thought I’d show everyone how I made my loki should armour as I couldn’t find a thorough tutorial when I was making it. WARNING: This is intended for complete beginners to craft foam armour so it is super extensive (i.e. long). It’s meant for this specific piece, but the information in it will work for most smaller craft foam pieces.
I used craft foam, hot glue, pva, 3d paint, masking tape, arcylic paints and a ballpoint pen.
So first off I made a pattern for the upper and lower section with paper. Once I got it right I cut 1 piece of craft foam for the bottom piece and two for the upper piece. I cut them and stuck them together with hot glue as I didn’t want to wait for pva to dry.
Then using a gas stove (you can use a heat gun or a hair dryer), I briefly put the craft foam about 40cm above the flames for a couple seconds before bending the end up and curving the rest. You want to keep it in this position for about half a minute and repeat till you have the shape you want. Don’t keep it over the stove for too long or your craft foam will start bubbling (very bad), or lose the shape you’ve got so far. It literally only needs about 3 seconds. That gets you to the above picture.
Then you want to start copying the design outline in pen onto the piece. Now’s a good time to cut out the holes before you have more craft foam in the way. I used an x acto knife. Taking masking tape, place it over a small section and copy the design (it should show through) onto it. Then take it off and place it gently onto a separate craft foam sheet and cut it out - scissors or x acto knife, it doesn’t really matter. Do this for all the pieces in a section then use pva glue to stick them down. I chose pva so it would give me time to arrange them as best as I could before they’re stuck in place for forever.
Once the raised sections were done, I dug a ballpoint pen in to create groves in the craft foam. It’s important it’s a ballpoint because you don’t want to tear the foam. Go slow and don’t dig too deep unless you want to tear the craft foam and start all over again. Then I used 3d paint for the more intricate raised areas. I drew lines with the tipped bottle and then blended the edges with a fine paint brush. Wait for it to dry and repeat on areas you want particularly high. For finer lines just apply it straight on with a paint brush.
Now’s the waiting game. You want to apply several layers of pva to seal the craft foam so it doesn’t eat up your acrylic paint. Most people advise using a 1:1 solution of pva to water to avoid streaking, but I find my pva doesn’t like that so I just applied it straight. Let it dry between applying layers. Once your craft foam has a nice shiny sheen and feels almost like plastic it’s ready to paint. Painting it white first and then adding colour would be better if when using different colours of craft foam as the gold will look slight different unless you add thousands of layers of paint - but frankly I couldn’t be bothered.
Add gold till your piece is even and opaque. How many layers this will take depends on your brand of paint.
Then to age the armour I used brown paint. Taking a dry brush I dipped it in the paint, brushed off most of the paint and then brushed it across the whole piece. Using kitchen roll, I swiped off where there it was to brown or I wanted some highlight. Then I used a super fine brush for adding harder lines where I wanted shadow and to highlight I used a fine brush and the gold paint.
Now I’m going to seal the top (I haven’t done this yet). This will help protect the paint and add a shiny, metallic look. If you’ve used acrylics rather than spray paint THIS IS NECESSARY. In the heat if two of your armour pieces are next to eachother THEY WILL STICK. IT WILL SUCK. YOUR DAY WILL BE RUINED. Now because I’m getting progressively cheaper as my cosplay progresses, I’m just going to add a couple layers of pva. I haven’t tried this before so I’m not sure if it’s a good idea but I don’t care because I’m not shelling out £8 on a bottle of PlastiDip. DON’T BLAME ME IF THIS DOESN’T WORK WELL IN THE HEAT. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
So good luck with your armour! It’s not hard so much as time consuming. Shoot me some questions if I missed anything.
Because this was formatted as a reply and might thus have not been as visible here it goes again, cleaned up version.
I am selling a Loki custome made by the same cosplay artist who made Fahrlight’s custome. P&P and dry-cleaning is included in the price.
Price is up for negotiation and best offer wins~
I am trying to desperately help my girlfriend to come here for Christmas (Long Distance Relationship ;___; ) and I haven’t worn the custome enough to have a reason to keep such a valuable item locked away forever when I could sell it and use the money to spend Christmas with my one and only love!
I would ask $400 for this in US-Dollars. Euro-Price is €293. I originally paid $460 for this, plus shipping to Germany, which was a hefty sum too.
The $400 already include shipping to wherever buyer lives and I would take it to the dry-cleaner before sending it off. So in the end the price is less than that ;]
I’m 1,80m tall (afaik that’s 5’10) and of average build (woman’s clothing size ~M to L). I think it’ll still fit you if you’re a bit smaller but of course it wouldn’t be the best choice for a tiny person.
I have to remark how well the custome hides your boobs. It doesn’t compress them but makes them blend in nicely. If you wear a binder or even just a sports bra underneath it will be even more perfect.
The custome consists of the things Cosplaymandy made - high-waisted pants, shirt and the sleeveless cloak. I am also throwing in the boot-covers me and my friend made. They are nothing special and could use adjustment with sticky tape or thread because the outer part bends in the middle when worn, but they are useable and were sewn with good store-bought fake leather on a sewing machine.
There is one tiny tear in the silver fabric but it’s really tiny and I am going to fix it carefully before sending the custome off~ The silver stuff is nicely padded but the fabric itself is thin so it happened despite me being careful. But I’m mending it properly.
(this is the costume.. it’s the picture cosplaymandy sent and I just painted over her picture for privacy, so sorry for the dodgy paint-job)
and these are the bootscovers I’m throwing in for free~
So yep that’s it really! USD 400 or €293 for an only worn twice Loki custome with boot-covers and shipping included and beforehand dry-cleaning!
Again not to brag, but made by the same person who made Fahr’s first custome! :)
Message me / send me and ask if you’re interested. <3
Payment methods can be discussed with whoever’s interested. I’m fairly flexible as I have paypal and of course a bank transfer is also a good option in Europe and in Germany especially.
I found this little figure in a charity shop for a few £ and bought it because we see so little of this costume in Thor. Loki wears this when they go to Jotunheim. Because the scenes are quite dark, we don’t see many of the details. I’ve always wondered what the back was like, as it looked like there was some kind of bow.
Thought I’d take pics for others who are curious, also for fan artists out there who might want to see the detail. @snackage
i’m making a loki costume for halloween… i started it at the start of this month, as a sort of challenge, and it needs to be done by the 27th. i’m a novice sewer, but a perfectionist. i have spent a shit load of money on fabric. i just finished one pant leg. i look like i have not slept in three days. i have not slept in two days, but that is besides the point.
Fucking. Hell. This is going to be fun.
Anyway, i’m shamelessly stealing @fahrlightloki ‘s idea for “dead loki” with the neck brace (maybe i’ll do a bruise if i can’t find the neck brace) and the facial wounds. my coworkers think it’s a hilarious idea.
it started as a little joke with my coworkers, that we would all be marvel characters on halloween. most of them have already backed out, so this is basically me coping with infinity war in an unhealthy way, playing it off as a fun seasonal craft. you don’t spend $100 on some fun seasonal crafting. this is serious business 😏
I’ll be tagging my crafting, ranting, and progress as #loki costume if you want to blacklist. it’s getting pretty absorbing, so i would suggest doing that if you don’t want to follow along.
