  2. Today, I tried to prank a lifeguard. There was a large beetle crawling on the lobby windows so naturally I had to put it to good use. I captured it inside a small origami cup, then flipped it upside down on top of the lifeguard’s phone. And I waited…

The much-anticipated reaction was the opposite of what was expected.

As I was doing some cleaning in the lobby, I heard the lifeguard chirp from the back room, “Who left Ringo in here?? Or is this John? I’m not sure…”

Confused, I looked up in time to see him gingerly walking into the lobby, carrying the origami cup with the beetle balancing on the top of it.

“Or maybe it’s Paul or George…” he mumbled to himself.

    “What???” I asked.

    “You know… the Beatles!”

I chuckled. “Where do you learn this stuff?”

    "My dad.”

And with that, he walked to the front doors, carefully knelt down, and told Ringo he was free to go.

  3. Day 3

The middle schoolers refuse to shower before getting into the pool. My only theory is that they think, in the time it takes them to walk from the showers in the locker rooms to the pool, they will certainly freeze into human Popsicles. Because what GOOD reason could they possibly have for not showering?

After three whole days of makeup-slathered, hair-gel-anointed mini humans soaking themselves in our precious pool… the water is now starting to look… milky. It’s difficult to see the beautiful blue tiles along the bottom. In the shallow end, where you can actually kinda make out the bottom of the pool, it’s quite obvious that the floor is strewn with debris of all kinds—elastic hair bands, unnameable black specs, broken and torn pieces of this or that middle schooler possession. During a swim lesson, a student pulled his hand out of the water and, to his horror, found his hand entwined in a massive, sprawling chunk of human hair.

Our little automated pool vaccum, nicknamed “Wall-E”, that cleans the floor has been in the repair shop for weeks.

Every afternoon like reliable old clockwork, the swim team kids show up for practice to find their training area littered and soiled. On a normal day, they don’t want to practice. But today, they were gnashing at the bit to get out of it in any way possible. No one wanted to go jump in the swamp water out there.

The kids plead with the swim coach to let them skip practice during middle school swim week from here on out. I agree on their behalf. The coach says no and promptly orders their little behinds in the pool.

  5. Day 2

Walking into work, while the middle schoolers had the run of the place, and I saw one of them walking out the front door. As I drew near, he began to wrestle with an umbrella. Not because the howling winds were trying to rip it away from him, but because he was trying to open it. He was trying to open it… by shaking it.

Bro, there’s this little thing called a Button ™.

  8. Me, to a female lifeguard: “Hey… what if a guy came in here and he had an English accent and he was 6'5” and —"

    Lifrguard: “I’d teach HIM swim lessons…” 😏

For many people, summer is a time for relaxation and reflection. Students take well-deserved time off after a difficult school year, while many workplaces relax their dress codes and many employees take vacations. As human beings, we’re in love with summer, and everyone knows it, from teachers or managers. Summer is also a great time to gain valuable experience in an important and worthwhile…
