were any other wlw kinda messed up a bit by the movie Mean Girls?
like the spot-on depiction of Straight Girl Culture’s eager interest in having a gay guy friend while being disgusted by lesbianism - but in the movie that disgust is never really challenged, criticized, or changed.
Damian is harassed, but gets to reclaim his dignity (by, for example, throwing a shoe back at his bully). He gets to be in on the joke (“too gay to function”). But meanwhile, much suspense is built into the film about some terrible secret Regina is holding over Janis’ head - a secret so horrible, so slanderous, Janis goes into hysterics every time Damian is on the verge of spilling it to Cady: Regina believes Janis is a lesbian, told the whole school so, and now Janis is an outcast.
(Gretchen snarling “dyke” is the first time I’d ever heard that word.)
When Regina jokes that jumping into a huge pile of girls is Janis’ dream come true, the auditorium - filled of girls who have admitted feeling victimized by Regina, who are on the verge of disowning her - burst out laughing. Janis is ultimately liberated only by turning the idea of her attraction to women into a joke.
There’s this undercurrent of “remember girls, lesbians are nasty!!” The devil’s in the details. (Speaking of which, we do at one point actually see two girls kissing - at a Halloween party, cheered on by guys, while Cady looks on in shock.)
tl;dr: disclaimer to straight girls and gay boys, i do think Mean Girls is a funny movie and i still watch it. but it did not do much to dissipate my internalized lesbophobia
