After Jack Kirby left Marvel for DC because Stan Lee was stealing all the credit he deserved for helping create characters and plot stories and because Marvel wanted him to sign an outrageously unfair contract, one of the comics he wrote was the fantastic Mister Miracle, about a super escape artist Kirby loosely based on himself (Big Barda, Mister Miracle’s wife, was similarly loosely based on Kirby’s own wife Roz). In Mister Miracle #6, Kirby introduced a character based on Stan Lee, the hucksterish wannabe manager Funky Flashman, who is a coward, annoys everyone in every panel he’s in, and who steals Mister Miracle’s things.

When I woke up this morning and hearing the news, I didn’t want to believe it. I almost couldn’t believe that Stan Lee had actually passed away...

RIP Stan, thank you for touching millions of souls and being a source of inspiration for millions more.

At long last, you’re reunited with Joan, Kirby and Ditko alongside countless legends who made comics the way they are.
