Today I want to share with you something very crucial that happened in my country.
Yesterday (May 15, 2020) in Poland a pro-life (anti-choice) activist Zuzanna Wiewiórka was honored with a medal of justice.
(”Stop hate for life defenders”)
She have been harassing a seventeen years old girl, who wanted to have an abortion due to risk of death. The teenager was seeking help online and she was found by the activist, who stalked, blackmailed and sent her pictures of aborted babies.
Moreover this is not Wiewiórka’s first action like that.
The girl refused changing her mind about abortion, but the activist was unstoppable and got information (most likely illegaly) about her child’s father and her family in order to tell them about young girl’s plans. The family locked her at homeand she is apparently struggling with side effects of a failed abortion made with non-medical tools.
Zuzanna Wiewiórka also said that “Blowing up clinics offering abortions is a good way to prevent murder and killing doctors who provide abortions is crucial to stop killing innocent”.
What’s more Zuzanna’s brother Maciej Wiewiórka supports his sister. He said that “Sometimes rape is the only chance for a man to have sex”. I do not even know how to comment that I will leave you with that.
How could someone who technically took away that young girl’s life get a prize for saving a life? How is she called a hero?
I wanted to mention that anti-choice activist try to take advantage of epidemy and lockdown that makes strikes impossible. Their actions do not seem like life saving at all.
I am shaking right now. I cannot even imagine how the poor teenager must be feeling. I definitely do not want to live in a world like that.
Please share! Spread the news, we have to resist this madness.
While people are inclined to whip out their phones and film when they see something alarming happening, those videos are not always recorded in a way that can be used as evidence in a legal proceeding or to support advocacy tactics.
At the human rights organization WITNESS, where I work as the senior U.S. program coordinator, we’ve learned that video has a greater chance of making an impact when it’s filmed ethically and strategically, and released in coordination with advocacy and legal efforts. Using the camera in your pocket can be a valuable way to ensure the world bears witness to abusive policing and systemic racism, help hold authorities accountable, and advocate for the real safety of our communities.
As some of you might know, there is a crisis in Chile. There a lot of reasons why: corruption; collusion between the biggest companies here (and we are talking about pharmacy, supermarkets, etc); a poor health system, where people die waiting for an appointment; old people killing themselves because their reiterement funds are just not enough to even buy their medicine; chemical disasters (in Quintero lots of children were contamined by lead because of the industrial pollution); the low minimun wage, about 300.000 pesos or 15.665 dollars, that IS JUST NOT ENOUGH to mantain a family, especially here where everything is so expensive.
So, what was the breaking point? The rise of the subway prices. The chilean subway is the most expensive in Latin America, and even more expensive than in New York. Because of this rise, people would spend at least $50.000 per month just going to their job, meaning they would use 1/6 of their salary just in that. Oh, and I haven’t even spoke about how water is privatised here.
Naturally, we didn’t accept that. And we refused to pay for it, so we, students, started to evade and eventually everybody else joined, asking for this to change. How did they respond? Violence. They decided to bring “Carabineros” aka the police or paco culiao, who responded with extreme violence, hitting, arresting, shooting people in the subway, and eventually even in the streets. The protest grew bigger, and the whole country started to protest, and now it is not just because of the rise of the prices, but also for all the inequality that has been brought into the country since 1973, since they decided to put this neoliberal system upon us. Our president, Sebastian Piñera, is lying, creating a whole set up along the police forces to incriminate us (we are talking about burning buildings, the police infiltrating between the people with guns, lying), calling the whole situation a “war”, where the only people armed are them, the police and the army, using guns and submachine guns against the people, against kids, against students and old people. Meanwhile people keep dying and dying, while the press keep lying and hiding the truth, the government does nothing, but justify it.
And I wont accept it. None of us will accept it. We will fight. So, please, if the situation keeps getting worse, if we lose any way to comunicate with the world, if they take everything away from us, I would be really really thankful to every person who spread the word. Please, I know I’m not being very specific, but If you do your research through twitter or instagram, you’ll surely find a lot of videos that are proof of this. So please, please tell the world that Chile is not a democratic country, that the people they call “criminals” is actually people just fighting for their rights. They are killing us, the poor people, the innocent people. They are abducting us. They are raping us. They are not respecting us. And I want to let people know about this.
If you didn’t know already, Yemen is a rather recently formed country and there has been a lot of fighting between the North and South of the nation. Violence has since escalated and this caused a civil war to break out in 2014, endangering the population of Yemen.
The UN has called it the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. Think about that statement. Approximately 80 percent of the population requires aid and “Around 3.2 million require treatment from acute malnutrition, including 2 million children below the age of five” (WorldBank.org). Save The Children says: “37 children a month have been killed or injured by bombs in the last year. More than 100 boys and girls are dying from extreme hunger every single day. At least one child dies every 10 minutes as a result of preventable killers such as cholera, with more than 100,000 children infected this year alone.”
The following is also a statement World Bank wrote: “poverty is projected to remain high with over three-quarters of the population in 2019 living below US$3.20 PPP a day, and approximately half of the population living below US$1.90 PPP a day. Given the bleak outlook, massive foreign assistance would continue to be required to fund recovery and reconstruction in a post-conflict period.” People are starving, homeless, lack access to healthcare, and scared.
Much of the world has turned a blind eye towards Saudia Arabia’s attacks on this country. At the same time, people have turned their backs against Yemen. This crisis has been going on for long enough. We need to speak out about this. We need to do our part. Here’s how:
I was not a gay man first by any manner of means until I became involved in fighting AIDS, and because someone close to me died. And suddenly I was no longer the white man from Yale, I was a faggot without a name.
Larry Kramer quoted in an obituary by Neda Ulaby at NPR. Larry Kramer, Pioneering AIDS Activist And Writer, Dies At 84
I ranted about this before but I’m trying to take action now, and I poste dbefore but the tags didn’t work. So Indonesia is potentially going to become a dystopic mysoginistic cruel authoritarian nation if this set of new laws get accepted. It’s disheartening that western media tends to ignore all the horrible stuff happening here and I think it needs to stop.
Please, sign this petition and signal boost/reblog this. From the bottom of my heart thank you if you decide to help out in fighting the festering patriachy and power abuse in Indonesia.
I’ll translate the description in the petition to make it clear (annotated by me with red):
My good friends,
In days time, DPR (People’s Representative Council, the one suggetsing the laws. At this point they just abuse power and hoard money through corruption instead of being the people’s voice in this ‘democracy’) and the government will legalize a set of preposterous crimimal laws! After legalizing the revision of KPK Laws (KPK in a national organization responsible to root out and deal with corruption in the government, and DPR tweaked the laws so that KPK has less power over them, alowing them to do their dirty deeds more easily), now they want to approve the revision of RKHUP (book of criminal laws)
“How does that affect me?” If you think so, better check if you’re among the people below. Because in RKUHP, these people are considered “criminals” (based on the draft agreed by DPR at 15 Sept)
Rape Victims - will be imprisoned for 4 years if they want to abort the resulting fetus
Women that have to go home from work late and night, found ‘displaced’ on the streets - Fined for 1 Million rupiah (about 71 USD)
Women who are forced to have roomates that are the opposite sex due to financial problems - can be reported and imprisoned for 6 months
Buskers (street performers) - Fined for 1 Million rupiah
Parking attendants (in many places at Indonesia, parking attendants help you park your car (most not employed by someone so members of the lower economic class), and their income comes fully from what you pay them) - Fined for 1 Million rupiah
Homeless people - Fined for 1 Million rupiah
Abandoned mentally disabled people - Fined for 1 Million rupiah
Journalists or Netizen (generally every Indonesian who uses the internet) - will be imprisoned for 3.5 years for criticizing the president
Parents can’t show contraception tools to their children because they are not the “authorized officers” and will be fined for 1 Million rupiah
Children who are reported to commit adultery by their parents - imprisoned 1 year
The worst part is that we can be punished as criminals whenever they want as a form of “traditional obligation” if considered offending “the law of the people” (this will be used as a front for racist acts. Even now racism against non majority ethinicities and religions such as Chinese Indonesians and non muslims (Being the majority, Indonesia radical muslim figureheads act like a racist prejudiced American pastor would. The situation is like how Christian and white supremacists are in America, the radical figureheads hold much power and oppress people of other political and religious beliefs with mobs of followers they manipulated for their cause.) are prevalent and the higher ups can be biased against our ethincity and so divert justice from us. This will worsen it)
Seriously, “the law of the people” what does that even mean? BS. The RKUHP proposal isn’t even certain and the government admits to have not researched on it! So incompetent right!
And then about corruptors, hmmm, in the revision of the KUHP the punishment for hoarding money for self gain in a way that defies the law for corruptors which was 4 years of prison is changed to be lighter, into 2 years of prison! (Which makes it lighter than rape victim abortion)
How did they make these absurd laws?
At 18 September 2019, the DPR had just performed a meeting with the Ministry of Human Rights for the legalization of RKUHP at level 1 (very near approval)
In spite of that, there is 1 more step to prevent the legalization of the laws, at the Plenary Meeting of the Indonesian DPR.
The President can reject the approval for this absurd set of laws.
Let’s ask the President to reject this RKUHP at the Plenary Meeting of its approval!
Now we can’t keep ignoring this anymore. Because anyone can be imprisoned. Me, you, our family, our friends, our crushes (Indonesia in-joke). #SEMUABISAKENA (#EVERYONECANBECAUGHT)
Sign this petition and share it in your social media. Let’s make the hashtag #SEMUABISAKENA viral so that the DPR can cancel the RKUHP. We don’t have much time.
Long ago we stopped laws that could imprison people criticizing the DPR from being approved. Now we also still have a chance to cancel this preposterous set of laws.
I will appreciate it so much if you sign and/or signal boost this. Indonesia is gonna start to become like Gilead from the Handmaid’s Tale if we don’t do anything.
“Diana Sanchez screamed as she writhed on the small bed inside her cell at the Denver County Jail. Gripping the thin mattress with one hand, she tried to use the other to take off her white cloth pants, only managing to free her left leg. Her face glistened with sweat. She had been in labor for hours, and now her baby was coming.
At 10:44 a.m. on July 31, 2018, in a moment captured on surveillance video, Sanchez gave birth to her son alone in her cell without medical supervision or treatment, despite repeatedly telling the jail’s staff that she was having contractions, according to a federal lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court in Colorado on Wednesday. The suit alleges that instead of “ensuring that Ms. Sanchez was able to give birth in a safe and sanitary medical setting,” nurses and deputies “callously made her labor alone for hours,” forcing her to endure a “horrific experience.” (source)
This happened in an allegedly “Christian” and “prolife” country. It’s inhumane. It’s torture. And unfortunately, it is very much in line with America’s hypocritical, racist, classist, misogynistic, punitive spirit.
The people—anyone even remotely involved—who stood by and allowed this to happen need to be arrested and criminally prosecuted.
Sherry Brachfeld had her wedding all set for Dec. 29 — the venue, the dress, the ring, a man she loved.
Then came a crashing intruder. Ontario’s Public Guardian and Trustee wants to leave her at the altar, now and possibly forever.
In a Nov. 29 letter, the state Guardian said it had “serious concerns” that Brachfeld is mentally capable of making such an important life decision and is refusing to provide documents she needs for a marriage licence.
“I should have the right to marry and live my life,” she said one day this week. “I’m a human being. I have a right to be happy.”
Brachfeld, 33, says she has a mild intellectual disability and is on the autism spectrum. She also admits to a hoarding tendency and problems with personal care — the very reasons the Public Guardian took over her affairs in 2017 from her mother, who had legally been in charge.
But Brachfeld says she’s been working on her mental health and points to her record of independence: working at Tim Hortons for 11 years; stints at Elections Canada; a couple of years on her own in Israel; moving freely about Ottawa, including going to the see the Nutcracker at the National Arts Centre on Wednesday evening.
She’s also graduated from the public school board’s Adaptive Learning Program and occasionally returned as a motivational speaker.
Yesterday marked 1 month that Chile has been protesting. Approximately 23 people have been killed by police, 200+ have lost an eye from close range shots done by police and military. Metro stations and super markets that have been burnt have been used as torture centers where police abuse men women and children. 30+ cases of rape or sexual violence done by police to men and women. 2000+ have been injured in some way by police, 6000+ are being detained or have disappeared (kidnapped by police/military). The Chilean people protest with flags and banners and are met with chemical water cannons, suffocating clouds of tear gas, or have been shot at by “rubber bullets” which are indeed not rubber.
No police casualties, and 1 police officer was slightly injured by a Molotov. United Nations hasn’t bothered, the media has lied and blocked videos of the truth. Photographers are being threatened for showing what the police are doing. Please spread this news. I have personally been assaulted by the Chilean police while trying to photograph them during the student protests while they grabbed, beat and detained children. Please listen, because the USA won’t show you what’s happening. USA has a close tie with Chile and was responsible for their last dictatorship led by Pinochet. Thank you for spreading this, the Chilean people need help and a voice.
Encourage termination of relations to university management. Many well-known universities across the globe has relations to PolyU. Tweet or Email them:
“Please consider terminating your partnership with @HongKongPolyU. The management has done nothing to protect its students in the siege of 18Nov, and even retreated all campus security. Your students are not safe in their hands.” , or something of the like.
Vote “Hong Kong Protestors” as TIME’s people of the year. I know others may be worth voting for too, but we need the publicity to resolve this humanitarian crises. Hong Kong Today, Taiwan Tomorrow, and the rest of Asia after.
Concept: a cooking show where each new challenge is creating a food that can be easily eaten by people who have allergies.
A challenge where bakers have to make carrot cake, typically made with nuts, taste exactly the same but they cannot use any sort of tree nuts.
A challenge where a team of chefs has to make something, but only one person can taste anything they are making because it’s a simulation where the other chefs are ‘allergic’ to the food.
A challenge where chefs have to make gluten and egg free pasta, and it must taste good.
A challenge where cooks make an easy to make meal, something that can be prepared in under half an hour, that tastes good and is nut, gluten, dairy, shellfish and egg free.
It sounds hard, ridiculously hard, especially when you try and make the food taste good, or the same as the original. But that’s how a lot of us live. I can’t really buy premade food from stores or fast food joints for fear it came in contact with nuts. I have to notify the servers that I have allergies in restaurants, and often it means either an extra half hour for us to get our food, or they mess up my order and I get nuts on my salad or something.
My allergies take time and effort to accommodate. I often risk a reaction just to be able to eat on the go, because there’s no fast, easy way to check for cross contamination in any store or restaurant right now. And just once, it’d be nice to watch a cooking show where someone like me wouldn’t literally die if they went on the show. Or risk dying to win.
Just once, I want to see allergies be accommodated by someone else, not just the person with the allergy.
You know what’s really frustrating as a vegan, and as someone who cares about all the political and moral things that are going on in the world?
Meeting other people who you agree with on everything else EXCEPT veganism. It’s so fucking beyond mind boggling and gross.
I can’t even count the number of people who I have met (and some I still know) in social or activist circles, where our ideals and morals and political ideologies and economical ideas are basically interchangeable with one another…
…but as SOON as veganism is brought up IN ANY capacity, those people turn into propoganda machines for animal agriculture. Even if they have studied and learned what veganism is, they flip the fuck out anyway.
— i hope everyone protesting today and in the following weeks will stay safe. the battle is just starting but protesters have already been wrongly and severely injured so please, be careful.
ice is starting to get involved; if you are an undocumented person do not go. stay with your friends, or family, and do not let them out of your sight, people have already gone missing.
don’t show your face, blur pictures, wear glasses, cover your arms and legs, and most importantly always have cameras rolling; medias are propaganda for the government.
they will portray you as violent, “thugs”,and a hundred of other words.
they will not show howthey run over people, they will not show how they mace children, they will not show how they shoot people in the eyes with rubber bullets, they will not show how they hit protesters, they will not show how they rip off women’s hijabs, they will not show how they purposely set old police cars on fire…
they will show nothing but what they want.
ALWAYS HAVE CAMERAS ROLLING. SHOW THE TRUTH.
as an european, i can only sign petitions, donate, use my platforms to bring awareness, and we will continue to do that until we get what we want.
I don’t understand people who are anti-capitalism but still bend over backwards to support and justify the meat and diary industry’s with the exact same capitalist rhetoric they eschew when it comes to hating billionaires
“ I think that America is incapable of understanding anything relevant to human rights. I think that America has already committed suicide and we who now thrash within its dead body are also dead in part and parcel of the corpse. America is truly a disgusting burden upon this planet. A burden upon all humanity…”
Eldridge Cleaver, 1968 [when asked his thoughts on what the MLK assassination means for the future]
balancing activism and your mental health is really hard. i envision people severely damaged by oppression being some of the most passionate to want to take part in activism, and yet would find activism the most difficult on account of their feeling already thwarted by the trauma of the very oppression that led to them wanting to fight against it in the first place.
