most important aspect of reptile keeping is choosing your heat fixtures and temperature
controllers. Snakes are ectothermic, so they rely on outside temperature to
influence their own body heat.
will go through heat fixture options, as well as the proper heat
controlling devices, to ensure you can give your ball python the best care.
Hey everyone, we just ran out of propane and we have 3 really cold nights to get through till paychecks come in! If you have any money to spare! We could really use it! Our PayPal is email@example.com we also accept google pay!
Anyone else with depression/anorexia etc. really struggle to turn the heating on?
For me I think it’s a mixture of the cost of it/growing up with a Dad who wouldn’t turn it on to October/struggling to value myself enough/worrying about the environment.
Mainly struggling to value myself enough.
I feel bone cold at the moment. Not as bad as anorexia cold. But I am cold. It’s not tooooo bad yet. I’m just sort of living under big thick blankets and sometimes popping my fleecy PJs on. It’s not reached the stage of fleece PJs over clothes, or constant heat packs. I’m having more hot drinks but they’re not constant.
I know that I definitely won’t let myself put the heating on until October, but I’m worried that I’ll struggle to put it on even then. It seems like such a waste with only me being in the house. It might help having Lucky. It might help that people sometimes come over. I just really struggle with it…
I remember a nurse in IP telling me that I was allowed to turn lights on in my house. That’s something I’ve struggled with in the past. Valuing myself enough to spend the money/use the environment for the electricity involved in running lights.
It’s such a tricky one. It’s better for the environment and for my bank balance not to use the heating. But where does that end and disorder begin?
I would just like to pick your brains about how to keep a tank warm. Unfortunately, living in a basement apartment (for the time being), the temps tend to be on the cold side and I would like to have the ability to keep Korra nice and appropriately warm. I do have a heat pad and I invested in a porcelain clamp lamp, which @wheremyscalesslither kindly pointed out isn’t actually doing much for her. I’m looking for an additional heat source just to be on the safe side! Please let me know if you have any recommendations and I’ll see what I can do! I’ll be attending the Downsview Reptile Expo (Toronto) this month, so I can take time to research and pick things up there!
When you wake up from the capitalist, consumerist nightmare that is our socioeconomic system (#SJW #eattherich), the thought of getting your financial shit together can be daunting. Where do you begin? What can you do right away to make an improvement in your financial prospects? How do you avoid fucking everything up even further? It can all be a bit overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. Here…
BONUS ROUND! Some things we added last winter to stay cozy and beat the chill:
Eat hot food: mashed potatoes and corn, nom nom. Hot soup is also a great option, along with beans and cornbread, mac n’ cheese, or chili.
Drink hot liquids: hot tea is good, just avoid any kind with caffeine in it. Going caffeine free is another post, of course.
Electric blanket: We really can’t reiterate this one enough. Topped with another fuzzy blanket on top to trap the heat in, this makes a super cozy cocoon for us.
Space heater: Even a tiny one can knock the chill off a room or at least off your general vicinity.1
Windows covered: We opened the curtains and blinds during the day to let the sun warm the house. It didn’t make huge difference, but a couple degrees is better than nothing. When the sun went down, we closed them up tight as you can see in the pic.
Fuzzy socks and layers: we are dressed for a ski vacation, basically. Thermals, wool socks, a hat, a scarf, and a bathrobe.
Cuddling our laptop: some laptops get super warm. Take advantage, but be careful not to cover up the vents or you might cause it to overheat.
Boiling some water: Get a big pot of water and put it on your stove on medium-high heat. It should be boiling gently, but not rolling, It’ll add moisture and heat pretty quickly. Plus, you can put in some cinnamon or pumpkin spice or lemon to make it smell nice. Keep an eye on it though, so you don’t burn your house down.
Curtains in doorways: We got a few cheap shower curtains from the dollar store and hung them up in the doorways where there are no doors. This helps trap heat in the room you’re in, so you’re not wasting heat on rooms you aren’t in. You could also use regular curtains or blankets.
Covered air registers: Some people like to cover up air vents in unused rooms while heating with their furnace. This is a bad idea. It stresses the unit and can shorten its life span. We, however, aren’t turning ours on, so we stuck plastic over all the vents to keep drafts from coming through them.
We’re actually quite cozy at the moment. A few more things:
Bring your pets indoors! Our dogs love to stay outside, but when the temperature drops below freezing we make them come inside. Make sure they have a sturdy four-sided shelter with insulation and a door for when they are outdoors. If you’ve got feral cats in your neighborhood, please consider making them a shelter and leaving them some high-calorie dry food. Here are instructions for a great feral cat house.
One of our dogs sleeps with us, but the others have their own room. Most pets won’t need a direct heat source as long as they are indoors and have decent bedding. Especially if there are more than one of them, they can sleep in a pile and stay pretty cozy. Running a space heater or lighting a fire in the room with them unattended is a huge fire hazard, so don’t do it. However, if they are in a drafty area and you want them to have some extra heat, consider a pet-safe microwavable pad like this one. For cats, a cardboard box with a blanket in it is a safe bet. Cats love boxes. Other small animals, such as rabbits, would benefit from a nest box and plenty of bedding.
If you’re still a little chilly, get in your bed under the covers and hibernate until you absolutely have to get up for work or something. We’ve spent many a winter hibernating with a book and our dog under the covers. Buy a tent and pop it over your bed.
Any advice for a quality space heater? Id love to have one that can het an average living/kitchen/dinning room (think first apartment approx 3-400sf with average ceilings. That can be relatively quiet for movies. Thx
Foam conditioning is an essential pass over of living in a hot desert, and one that is a relatively modern development. In ancient the world, set up shop well-grounded how to adapt upon cold climates in step with inventing enliven clothing and developing heating systems. The first heating systems were simply a fire at in a intermediate space vented by a hole intrusive the roof. Technology changeable drastically since then, nevertheless heating correspondence a dithering concept – burn top people and harness the warmth.
Cooling a home on the other hand is more difficult. Exceedingly fossil cultures had no way touching cooling homes besides incorporating shade, and simply not living entree hot places. Cultures that lived in hot deserts, such thus and so the Bedouin, milk thick, wool tents to block the sun. Other cultures, such as Spanish missionaries in Mexico, use thick stone walls and low conversion. The pith is that the lowlands, at night, is cool, and thick walls prevent the interior on the building from heating up quickly during the day. In the time the stones use force upon had time to fury of lust up, the moonlessness has upset, and into the bargain the lasting warmth is a welcome defense against the velvet darkness chill.
But these ancient strategies do not cool a va hospital; himself unequivocally go at in order to minimize heating from the sun. Irruptive places like Phoenix, Arizona, where the air temperature frequently reaches 110 degrees or more in the shade, merely providing shade very isn’t adequate. Swamp coolers were perfected in Phoenix rapport the early 20th hundred-dollar bill, and are quite effective at lowering the temperature. With relatively low-tech operation, and casting vote high-pressure systems, overprovision coolers are simple and cheap. But, when the noise abroad humidity rises, swamp coolers can make heat miserable.
Air conditioning is a revived option in place of cooling a living quarters or building on which occasion the air is humid, whereas it vermiform appendix on a different principle. Point swamp coolers operate on the principle of evaporation, air conditioning takes advantage of the fact that gasses lose and gain heat notwithstanding pressurized or decompressed. Instead of using heat energy to evaporate proteus, an give conditioner simply moves heat without in the building to a fan outside. Because of this, it is technically a heat examine, and can be grind in reverse corridor winter upon heat the sept. Further, the process of cooling air without evaporating water actually removes humidity from the air, which condenses and must be unflappable and stalemated barring into a empty pan and pipe.
The heating system was holding, which is more than could be said for the barometer. Jason had no idea how far down he was, but his feet were firmly planted on the ground beneath him, and so long as that remained the case he’d be alright. His air supply was secure, and backup systems were in place. Internal suit pressure was within optimal levels.
Heat, pressure, air, all in target range. So why, then, were the eyes still watching him? Little red slivers, hovering. Couldn’t be a symptom of the pressure. He’d been descending into the brine lake, an illusory lake in the ocean floor with a high salinity content, for an hour. It was a gentle descent, an expedition designed to discover what might live at the bottom.
They didn’t expect much, maybe a few bottom feeders. Nothing that could bear those shining red eyes watching him. Jason reached the lake bed, and stopped. A few large boulders obscured the flash of his headlights, but as he watched, from behind one strode a naked man, silver skin tight over hard muscle, cold red eyes glaring. Jason shook, as he realized he was surrounded.
