My all time favourite hc is that all men think Legolas as calm and cold as ice and snow, unmoved by mere mortal emotions and yet every single elf thinks Legolas loud and a complete emotional wreck who’s poker face is as bad as his love of dwarves and men and random emotional outbursts and he’s entirely too affectionate.
Legolas: *puts his hand on Gimli’s shoulder says something about stars and trees and then leaves*
Faramir: I’ll never understand that elf man. Does he even know human emotion?
Thranduil: My god he is all but throwing himself into that dwarves bed, my child is such a hussy.
My favorite scene in the entirety of LoTR is when Gimli and Legolas walk into Minas Tirith, after just having braved unspeakable ghost horrors and a battle, and Legolas is prancing and singing like the cheerful jerk he is, everyone’s watching him cuz he’s beautiful, and Gimli’s grumping pissily along like YEAH THESE BRICKS ARE OK I GUESS, NOT GREAT, 6/10 NEEDS MORE DWARVES and Legolas is just like ARAGORN Y’ALL NEED SUMMORE PLANTS, I’M GONNA TELL MY DADDY TO SEND Y’ALL SOME PLANTS as if these are the highest priorities of state and there isn’t a catastrophic war with Satan going on
They’ve stopped for a night at a tavern and Aragorn drank his weight in ale then retired to bed
And Legolas is sad and Gimli is tired and they’re drunk and they’ve been flirting and they both know it
And they share that look
And they just think ‘fuck it’
They drain their drinks and Legolas grabs Gimli’s hand and leads him back to his room
But Legolas stops him right before and is like “you know there are certain Elven traditions regarding sex” and Gimli is like “aye I know” and Legolas is like “but you still want to?” And Gimli’s like “stop talking”
And Legolas is thinking ‘he wants to marry me he really does’
And Gimli is like ‘hmm can’t wait to discover these Elvish kinks’
And the next morning Legolas braids his hair in traditional marriage styles and gathers special herbs to make a bonding tea
And Gimli wakes up alone and wanders down to the tavern and orders a large breakfast when Legolas appears literally glowing and sporting a new hairstyle and some delicious tea
And Legolas kisses him on the lips in greeting and Gimlis taken aback because ‘woah we haven’t even told anyone and besides we just had sex it’s not that big of a deal’
And Gimli tells him immediately that they should keep it quiet
And Legolas is all “but that’s not in the elvish way”
And Gimli’s like “aye and it’s not in the Dwarvish way to be announcing to the world who ya fucked”
And Legolas agrees to keep it quiet until after the quest is complete, but he tells Gimli that he wants to write back home about it.
And Gimli’s like…
And they have a slight argument when Legolas tells him that he would want to tell his father of his marriage
And Gimli’s like “YOURE MARRIED”
And then it dawns on Legolas that despite what Gimli said he really does not know what sex with an elf entails
Which of course is when Aragorn decides to show up
And Legolas grabs his wrist and rushes him to side ignoring Gimli’s looks of confusion, jealously and anger
And Legolas just yells in elvish “I ACCIDENTALLY MARRIED GIMLI LAST NIGHT”
and Aragorn just freezes for a moment then he looks at Gimli then at Legolas then back at Gimli… and then back at Legolas and then he just starts laughing
Please stop laughing
And he claps Legolas on the shoulder and tells him good luck in Elvish
Then he sits down next to Gimli steals a slice of bacon off his plate and says “congratulations on your marriage”
And Gimli is so confused he’s trying speak so he just looks up to Legolas who is staring at him with wide, concerned eyes
And if just dawns on him and he just gives a tiny little
Edit: The fic is now out x it’s called Oh, and it’s on AO3
One of my absolute favorite things about Lord of the Rings is the character development and friendship of Legolas and Gimli.
They met and immediately resented one another because of the centuries-old bitterness between dwarves and elves. But once they become part of the fellowship, they learn how to work together.
The moment Gimli tells Legolas about Galadriel giving him 3 hairs from her golden head, Legolas is starting to think “maybe dwarves aren’t so bad.” And Gimli obviously doesn’t think negatively of all elves since he declared Galadriel as the fairest thing in all of Middle Earth. (I also love the implications of her giving him 3 hairs when she denied them to Feanor. See The Silmarilion if you’ve never read it. It’s worth the read.)
By the time they meet the Rohirim during their pursuit to rescue Merry and Pippin from the Orcs, Legolas’ instinct is to defend Gimli from Eomer’s threat.
The Battle of Helm’s Deep is another showcase of their friendship. One of my favorite moments from The Two Towers is their friendly banter when they await the battle.
I also love that they turn every battle into a friendly competition. I like to imagine how they got to that point. Did they both silently keep tally of their kills in the battle against the goblins in Moria? And then later discuss it? Perhaps as a coping mechanism to the grief of losing Gandalf on the bridge of Khazad-dûm? I can see it starting as banter between whether elves or dwarves are better fighters. And I can just see how from that point on, they have this agreement of “whoever kills the most enemies in the next battle is the superior warrior.”
And when Legolas takes down the oliphaunt in the Battle of Gondor and Gimli is just flabbergasted. He indignantly insists it still only counts as one. By that point, they are completely friends who would lay down their lives for the other without thinking twice.
And one of the many moments throughout the series that brought me to tears was their march against the Black Gate. They all expected to die there - a last ditched effort to distract Sauron so Frodo could destroy the ring. They were the diversion and they knew it. When Gimli says he never thought he’d die side-by-side with an elf and Legolas just smirks and counters “What about side-by-side with a friend?”
Gimli considers and you can see him really process it. That Legolas is his friend. After everything they endured together, how could they not be? I’ve watched these films at least 30 times and I always tear up when Gimli replies, “Aye. I could do that.”
If you’ve never read the books, please consider doing so. Their friendship is so fantastic. It’s truly one of Tolkien’s greatest acts of the trilogy in my opinion. Legolas even built his own boat and snuck Gimli into Valinor, making him the first and only dwarf to ever see the undying lands. The fact that they remained such close friends until the end of time just gives me so many feels. I stan one elf-dwarf friendship as the ultimate enemies to friends trope.
