i learned that Marie Antoinette built an entire fake village, complete with a working farm and fake villagers, in the backyard of Chateau de Versailles, so she could pretend to be a “peasant” whenever she felt like it. (x)

Here’s the Tour de la Lanterne, in the French city of La Rochelle.
This medieval tower was used as a prison from the 15th to the end of the 19th century, and prisoners engraved many messages, names and drawings over the centuries.

A boat ! Many prisoners were pirates or privateers, and so they engraved a lot of boats, often depicting them so precisely that specialist nowadays can identify the type of boat.

A boat enters the harbor of La Rochelle, probably drawn sometimes in the 18th century. Just look at the level of details. It’s astonishing.
