Disheartening fact about being a minority female in a male dominated world
Went to career fair at college on Thursday. Got all gussied up in a professional dress and I even printed my resume out on resume paper.
For those of you who don’t know, Clemson TechJob career fair is one of the largest recruiting opportunities for companies worldwide (meaning over 200 companies compete to get us to get jobs) some companies are offering jobs for only two students, some are offering over 100.
So I went. I talked to 4 companies I REALLY wanted to and about 6 that I was ‘meh’ about. I ran out of resumes (I printed 15) and went home. In an hour. Wait. That’s about 3 mins per person, right? But my classmates were telling me they talked to people for so long it got awkward, as in three companies in *three hours*. So what was up?
You see, I talked to three companies for at least 10 mins each. So that leaves the rest for *less than* 3 mins each. Wait. WUT?
I know what you’re thinking, 'perhaps she interviews REALLY BAD.’ I can assure you I do not and being a senior in Mechanical Engineering, well, I have a competitive GPA. So what’s the problem?
I don’t have a dick. I know, I know, 'poor girl whining about sexist men’, but hear me out okay?
I stood in line to speak to the recruiter at one company (SPAWAR) and the recruiter refused to shake my hand, he spoke to me in a loud slow tone (like English was a second language for me) and told me that they were recruiting seniors in science fields. I was wearing a name badge with my major and year on it. That threw me aback. I’m sure I stared at him in shock for a second before I regained my footing (I did get 100% in improv) and cheerfully introduced myself as a ME senior and that I was interested in the company and the CS they designed for the US mil and would like to know more about the opportunities for ME’s and how I would apply in the spring.
He stared at me like I had 5 heads and tried to give me a mousepad (free stuff at career fairs y'all). He then repeated that they were looking for seniors in scientific majors like engineering but they might have something in my field.
I repeated that I was an ME and asked if he had any brochures (clearly this was going nowhere). It was then when he realized there was a MAN behind me. He gave me a sweet smile and turned to the guy behind me, shook his hand, introduced himself and said they were looking at seniors in engineering. It was then that I picked up the information on the table and went to my next companies.
I wish I could say this was a one time thing, but actually, most companies completely ignored me in favor for the men behind me. I’ll say that the good experiences I did have were phenomenal and I expect to get calls from at least two companies, but yeah… This sucks. Especially when I’m leader of my study group, my design team and I tutor my class mates. Most of them have jobs at the places that snubbed me and they have said that I am the teacher they wish they were paying or that they should pay me the tuition (minor being stuck up, that’s what they’ve told me) and my teachers have actually asked me if I’ve thought about teaching because I’m smart and they see other students look to me for help. (Again, not bragging). So it just gets old.
Anyways, thought those struggling with the same crap I do might like to know that you aren’t alone and we can totally get this gone. Equality isn’t just for men.
