rant time <3
punks and hippies were once simply politically active youths calling out their governments who were letting them down. nowadays the various “aesthetics” that have come out of these movements have been completely separated from their political associations.
60s hippies were pacifists, against capitalism, all for equality, and used peaceful movements to promote peace. this turned into white women who desperately defend their dreadlocks, post videos of them smoking weed, and try to use their relaxed “hippie” lifestyle to excuse them from fighting injustice with the rest of us. 80s punks were antifascists, against capitalism, and used more violent actions to get their point across. this eventually morphed into the type of people who worship morrissey (a fascist!) ignore politics altogether, and view piercings and dyed hair as nothing more than fashion.
now i am definitely not going to throw hate towards all those who identify with cottagecore, witchcraft, grunge, or emo aesthetics because there is nothing wrong with them! but please remember the meaning behind these cultural movements and the original motivations behind them!!
hippies were friendly and peaceful because they wanted EQUALITY.
punks were rebelious and violent because they were ANGRY at NAZIS.
cottagecore stems from the ideal life away from capitalism that hippies once tried to achieve when they started communes in various parks and began living away from “the capitalist dream”. i’m sure you already know this but witchcraft comes directly from people of colour! you are absolutely not allowed to practice it if you are racist. (sidenote: i know it is weird that i’m suggesting witchcraft comes from hippies but it wasn’t until the white hippie ladies started wearing crystals around their necks that other white people became interested and much of the modern witch aesthetic incorporates elements of both original witchcraft and hippie fashion). grunge/emo aesthetics, well I don’t actually know much about them, but all I know is the punk movement started in the new york drag scene and was by and for liberal minorities, therefore you cannot identify with any of these aesthetics if you are racist, homophobic, transphobic, or well, an asshole.
