Another e3, another year of people making mean and unnecessary remarks about the kinds of games they’re not interested in for Tumblr Kool Points™
“wait people still play eso?” says a tumblr user just days after Bethesda announced eso has 13.5 million accounts. WoW had TV adverts bragging about 12 million subscribers during its peak, for context. Eso continually wins best mmo awards year after year. Just because you don’t see people play this game doesn’t mean its dead??
Also just generally mmo hate - you may not like them, but they’re a huge genre of games with millions of players. People like being able to come home from work, log in, talk to their friends, do daily tasks or raids in the same game. These games might not be your thing, but they belong on the e3 stage as much as anything else due to the sheer number of people who play them.
“mobile games, snooze” & “who let’s mobile games be at e3??”. When you spend 10 hours a week on average on public transport, you learn to appreciate a good mobile game, lol. Mobile gaming is an extremely fast growing market around the world. It’s also a lot more accessible than console gaming. The mobile gaming market is a good place to be. But its extremely easy for your app to be buried. Showing off your app on stage at e3 is a great way for it to be noticed. Fallout shelter and elder scrolls blades successes are likely down to appearing at e3 and apple events, putting the game Out There.
Also, seriously. Spend like 470 hours on public transport a year and you’ll appreciate a well thought out and engaging mobile game. Seriously, mobile gaming is my relax and unwind time on a busy and hectic commute in and out of London every day.
There’s always an audience for these games, even if you and your Tumblr Crew don’t see them. Don’t be a dick towards things that aren’t aimed at you but other people like.
It reeks of gatekeeping too, as if these kind of games aren’t GOOD enough to be considered for e3…. Even if they may have larger player bases than the kinds of things you may want to see.
You can just go “that’s not for me” and not make a Snarky Witty Post For Tumblr Kool Points™ that insults it or implies no one cares.
