I’m a little alarmed by how many fans don’t believe Flemeth was abusive to Morrigan because she wad polite to THEIR PC, and/or Flemeth seemed hurt by Morrigan calling her out on her abuse.
Many abusers are cruel in private, but charming around company. That’s intentional
If they were abusive in public, everyone would know and turn on them. Keeping the cruelty behind closed doors is what allows them to not only maintain good PR, but isolate and control their victims further since people won’t believe or support them. Even if just mentally or emotionally.
“Oh, but she was so nice to ME, I can’t believe she’d be cruel to her daughter behind closed doors–” That’s literally what she wants you to think.
As for Flemeth looking hurt when Morrigan called her out on her abuse… GOOD. She was a monster to her daughter and SHOULD feel bad for being called out on it.
In DA2, Flemeth fully admits to molding and manipulating Morrigan into being what she wants to serve her own ends.
Flemeth: Morrigan is a girl who thinks she knows what’s what better than anyone else. And how could she not? I raised her to be that way.
Hawke: You sound like you don’t know whether she is your daughter or your enemy.
Flemeth, smirking: Neither does she.
And then in DAO Morrigan casually reveals all the ways Flemeth isolated and neglected her, brainwashed her to think things like beauty and love were frivolous weaknesses while strength and power were paramount. Smashed beloved belongs to break her spirit, and in the Broken Circle Fade dream we see she may have physically beaten her…
And then when Morrigan dares to call Flemeth out on how badly her molding, manipulating, and abuse traumatised her, we’re supposed to feel sorry for FLEMETH??
I don’t think so, Tim!
