Known as Ulay, performance artist Frank Uwe Laysiepen died this morning at the age of 76 from complications of his cancer treatment.
Ulay was most famous for his collaboration with Marina Abramović. After they met in 1976, they became one of the art world’s most iconic couples. When they broke up 12 years later, they created a performance in which they walked towards each other across the Great Wall of China.
Marina Abramović wrote on her social media channels: “It is with great sadness I learned about my friend and former partner Ulay’s death today. He was an exceptional artist and human being, who will be deeply missed. On this day, it is comforting to know that his art and legacy will live on forever”.
Ulay will be remembered as a pioneering performance artist, who experimented with his own body and gender identity, incorporated his audience into his work, and made art out of everything - even his own life and the illness that ended it.
