Fandom Miscellany

@ta-dala / ta-dala.tumblr.com

Welcome. NOT for Under 18. NOT spoiler-free.
I POST: Star Wars (90% Rogue One/Rebelcaptain at this point; also: Luke Skywalker). Hot Men of Star Wars (90% Diego Luna at this point; also: Hamill, Isaac). Other pretty Hollywood people. Fic. Art. Miscellany. Inspirational Things. Scenic Things. A metric fuckton of Fashion Porn.
I AM: Shameless. Unapologetic. Shamelessly unapologetic. Older fan girl.
I BELIEVE: Luke Skywalker is/was Too Hot to be a Hermit or a Widower.
I SHIP: Luke Skywalker with Mara Jade, a Wife (any wife), Family, Sex, Happiness, and Respect. RebelCaptain with life and each other.

i cannot believe i’m about to defend george lucas as a scriptwriter but at least the prequels had the decency to actually interrogate why anakin’s actions were evil and unconscionable and those stories contended with the horror of the actions themselves as well as their collateral damage

the sequels do none of these for kyle ron

“oh so you’re saying in fiction all evil has to be punished???” absolutely not. anakin won, remember? he went on to build an empire, like he said he was going to. but the story forces us as the audience to contend that he was evil, whatever his Tragic Backstory was.

the sequels do not do that for kyle ron.

anakin killed a room full of children and all other characters are horrified by it. kyle ron blew up a planet on which many children live, and we never, ever talk about it again. the prequels do not defend or uplift anakin, whereas the sequels do a sharp one-eighty and turn kyle ron into the hero/protagonist of a story that was never supposed to be his.

The Prequels were shit, but at least they were GEORGE'S shit.

Ringer: The thing is different this year (Narcos: Mexico) is certainly the characters and there’s something about the performance of Diego Luna that I think a lot of people are gonna be talking about for a while. Because unlike… You just think about that guy, you think he’s sort of baby face, innocence and energy, he’s basically already The Godfather: Part II by episode three. Can you talk about identifying Gallardo as a character you guys want to build a show around but also matching that with Diego? Eric Newman: With Gallardo, just as with, more Pablo than the Cali guys, we needed to humanize him. When Diego Luna is your actor, you’re half way there. You have a guy that is just so endearing, great and empathetic (Ringer: you’re starting with a guy who’s gonna score 20 points.) Yeah, he’s coming off the bench and you can count on him. But in terms of how we construct the character, we were hoping, I think we’d pulled it off, you’ll be the judge, by the time you realize that he’s a sociopath, an approximation of a human being, you’ve already been falling in love with him. (x)

Well shit yeah, that about sums it up.

“First to Wake” ~Rebecaptain Secret Santa for @ohstardustgirl  Prompt: Sharing a Bed Trope (one of my favorites TBH)

It is meee! Your secret santa! I hope you enjoy this my dear! I had SO MANY different ideas for the position and colors and stuff, but this was the final result. I hope that it is to your liking. I’ll try to do a little ficlet to accompany it. I just ran out of time with my birthday and Christmas and stuff! :) Enjoy!

How to Backup your Tumblr

I was just semi-complaining that I was still looking for a decent way to backup my +6k posts without having to use paid services or even just wordpress (which has an import from tumblr tool that asks for permission to access your blog and also make posts), when I decided to actually put some effort into my google search.

Results were positive: I have successfully backed up my blog

*By which I mean: everything that I have ever posted.  Not included: drafts, queue, likes, followers, following, comments, notes, chat.

I followed this method (word by word), and now have a 450 MB folder on my computer with the name of my blog on it containing:

1. Folder “Archive” (contains .html files listed by month) 2. Folder “Media” (contains gifs and images, mine has +1k files in it; might contain also audios but I have no way of confirming that because I’ve never reblogged an audio post from this blog) 3. Folder “Posts” (contains single .html files, each one a post; I have +4k files in it) 4. Folder “Theme” (contains only my avatar, but it might be a matter of if you have personalized themes or not) 5. .html file “Index” (by opening it it will give you the archive of your blog organized by month; clicking on a month will open up the archive for that month, and you’ll be able to read all the posts for that month as if you were on your blog**, except sans your theme graphic, with each page containing 50 posts)

**I can see gifs, links, embedded videos, tags, number of notes (but I can’t open up the notes, clearly), text is also correctly formatted.

So yeah, in case anyone wants a very quick way to back up their blog, it took me less than 10 minutes.

P.S. I didn’t have any issue, but to be on the safe side always check for spyware and virus threats before and after downloading anything.

this is actually really useful if you have an art blog full of years of work that you otherwise no longer have access to the original files. A lot of the art I have in the early days of my art blog are in that boat. I did this process JUST for that reason and I was pretty astonished at just how many pieces of media it backs up! (literally all of it) Drawings I didn’t even realize were sitting in my archive due to having been posted to text posts or undercuts, or untagged for years! It’s worth it if just for that, even if tumblr isn’t shutting down or deleting your blog.

reference.

It worked for me! And it worked a hell of a lot faster than waiting for Tumblr to process my export request in light of this Female-Presenting Nipplegate nonsense.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind, however:

1) If your Command Prompt comes back with the error: “python is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch file”, this solution worked for me.

2) The above instructions do not include audio and video files. The instructions included with the tumblr_backup.py script tell you how to do it, but the instructions aren’t exactly the most clear, so check below the cut for instructions on installing the additional script you need to enable you to have the tumblr_backup.py script save your audio and video files:

it’s gonna be ok

For those of you going through this for the first time: everything will be okay. Fandom always survives stuff like this. We’re good at it.

I know there’s lots of advice posts out there. This isn’t an advice post. I’m just going to tell you why it’ll be okay.

So far, on every commercial platform fandom has called home, there has come a tipping point when we leave. There have been a few scares on Tumblr before, but I didn’t think that we’d reached the tipping point back then. I do think so now. Given the way I’ve seen fandom leave platforms before, yes, this is the real thing. It won’t happen all at once, but in waves. You can afford to wait, but start thinking about it so you’re not taken by surprise when you reach your limit.

Take note of those advice posts that are going around, and especially of the things the BNFs in your fandom are planning – people will tend to follow them in clusters, so that’s a good place to start. But even if you leave it all to the last minute in the hope it won’t happen, and then realise you need to leave after all, it will still be okay.

We are fans, and the internet has always been our playpen. We all have multiple social media accounts, many with the same handle. We can find each other again. It won’t be the same. Of course it won’t. Tumblr fandom is different from Livejournal, is different from GeoCities. But it will still be fandom, it will still be good, and you will still find people you like, including some of those currently in your fannish circle.

We have the advantage of the OTW now too – this kind of thing is exactly why we built it. It’s our safe harbour, no matter what, because we own it.

Once you decide to leave Tumblr, it won’t be as scary as you think. You’ll recognise people’s handles. You’ve probably already done this without realising it – remember the people you used to share a fandom with, but no longer do? Their handles are still seared into your brain, and you’ll always feel that pang of nostalgia when you see them again.

It’s just the same when fandom migrates.

Some people will disappear, and you never will find them again. But mostly, you will still see the same handles, having the same conversations, sharing love for the same favourites, just in new places. You will find them on Dreamwidth, Pillowfort, Instagram, Twitter, Google docs, discord, fanfic.net, Wattpad, Deviant Art, YouTube, Vimeo, and so on. Most importantly, you’ll find them on Fanlore and AO3, because they are run by the OTW and we own it.

Fans and fandom will still be here long after Tumblr is full of rolling tumblrweeds.

We’re good at this. No matter where we end up, you will find your people again. Fandom will go on. It will be okay.
