Your best friend always had a habit, a bad one. Every second of the day, you would catch him with his lower lip wedged between his teeth or relentlessly picking at it with his fingers.
You both found yourselves in the university library, desperately attempting to study for the upcoming physics exam. Well, to be precise, Jake was valiantly trying to tutor you. The library was quite full today, bustling with students diligently cramming their studies in preparation for a looming test. Amidst the crowd, you and Jake sought refuge in a seat tucked away in the farthest corner, a deliberate choice to distance yourselves from the commotion.
As you glanced across the table, you examined Jake, head dropped low, deeply engrossed in scanning the textbook. You let out an exasperated groan and rolled your eyes as you once again observed him absentmindedly nibbling on his bottom lip. You had hoped your little sound of annoyance would capture his attention, yet to no avail. The boy remained completely engrossed in the textbook, oblivious to your attempts. His lip, now visibly bruised from incessant biting, served as a testament to his unwavering focus.
Beneath the table, you discreetly employed your foot to gently kick his shin, hoping to catch his attention. What you didn't expect was his overexaggerated reaction.
“Ow! Y/N! What on earth was that for?!” He whisper-screamed while clutching his leg. You narrowed your eyes at him, clicking your teeth disapprovingly, arms crossed, fixated on his reaction.
“Sim Jaeyun.” A palpable tension filled the air as Jake stiffened upon hearing his full name roll off your tongue.
“Yes, ma’am,” Jake gulped, his voice betraying a hint of nervousness.
You let out a huff before launching into a passionate rant. “First off, I didn’t even kick you that hard, and secondly, how many times have I told you to stop torturing your poor lip?” You raise your eyebrows at the poor boy, who is now smiling nervously at you.
Jake’s nerves got the best of him, causing a nervous chuckle to escape his lips, only for it to quickly morph into a fit of coughs. You swiftly push your water bottle towards him, watching as he promptly unscrews the cap and eagerly downing the liquid. While patiently waiting for him to finish, you idly spin your pen between your fingers, a subtle display of restlessness.
Jake downs the whole bottle, casting an apologetic glance your way, before deftly tossing it into the nearby trashcan. Your eyes followed it, observing as it gracefully descended with a satisfying swish. “Let’s go!” Jake exclaimed, pumping his fist triumphantly into the air, celebrating his small victory. You were far from amused, your face contorting into a disapproving frown as you watched his little stunt. Jake cast a timid glance in your direction before whining, “But, Y/N~” he pouted, “I can’t help it,” he insisted, eyes big and wide looking at you.
You cursed silently at your heart for skipping a beat, your stomach fluttering at the sight of his pleading puppy eyes. Why did Jake Sim have to be so incredibly, infuriatingly cute all the time? It really isn’t helping with your unrequited love for him that you had tried so hard to suppress and ignore.
With a deep breath, you look up, eyes widening, when you realize Jake had subtly moved closer to you with his chin resting on his hands.
“W-what? Quit staring at me like that,” you stammered, clearing your throat, your eyes darting around, trying to find something to look at to avoid his stare. As you attempted to shift backward, an involuntary whine escaped your lips when you realized the chair had tapped against the wall, leaving you effectively trapped and unable to create any further distance between yourself and Jake.
There were moments like this when you had come dangerously close to losing your composure and almost confessing your love for him.
I mean, how could you not fall in love?
How could you not fall in love when he was the one running to multiple convenient stores at 4 in the morning trying to find you medicine when you broke down with a fever?
How could you not fall in love when he was the only one around for you when your parents got a divorce?
How could you not fall in love when he worked his ass off in high school just so you guys could go to the same university?
How could you not fall in love when he’s the one who knows everything about you? Your likes and dislikes, he even knows of your little ritual of needing all the numbers you punch into the microwave to add up to 9.
How could you not fall in love when he was the only one who remembered your birthday every year, always buying you cakes and showering you with presents?
How could you not fall in love when it was so easy to do so?
At one point, you started to realize that Jake was just Jake, always so incredibly kind and nice. Always wanting to make people happy, sometimes even forgetting his own happiness. He was so selfless, so caring for those around him.
He was always like this and with everyone. But that was exactly the reason why you fell for him, hard.
Your thoughts were abruptly interrupted by Jake’s giggles. As you looked up, you’re met with the sight of him puckering his lips at you playfully. You frown upon seeing him, Jake has no idea the things he does to you. If only he knew the thoughts swirling in your mind at that moment. How you longed to lean forward and press your lips against his.
Jake whined, “You know what, don’t play dumb,” he huffed.
You roll your eyes as you begin to fumble through your backpack.
“Hurry, hurry, I want the grape-flavored one.” Jake waves his hands at you.
“Jake, what if I don’t have that one,” you sigh, frantically rummaging through your disorganized bag.
Jake extended his arms behind his head, leaning back in the chair with a playful smirk. “No way,” he countered, a teasing glint in his eyes. “You always have the whole collection with you. I still remember you saying, ‘I always have chapstick on me, so you better not complain about your lips being chapped,’ blah blah blah.” Jake bursts out laughing after his poor attempt at mimicking your high school voice.
You blow air into your cheeks, puffing them up in defiance as you pull out the grape-flavored chapstick. With a subtle smirk, you uncapped it, holding it in front of Jake. “Since you’re so unappreciative, Jake Sim,” you taunted playfully, “I guess I’ll find someone else who needs my chapstick more.” The teasing tone in your voice was accompanied by a flicker of amusement as you began applying the chapstick on your lips slowly while maintaining eye contact with him.
Jake’s throat tightened as he swallowed hard, watching as the chapstick glided across your lips, tugging it, leaving a faint trail of moisture and a hint of the sweet scent in the air. He quickly leaned forward, hands reaching out to softly wrap around your wrist, stopping you. The sudden touch sent a jolt of electricity through both of you, the connection palpable as his warm grasp held you gently but firmly, preventing any further application.
“No,” Jake protested, his bottom lip jutting out in a pout as he frowned. “Your chapsticks are only for me.”
You halted, eyes widening, “What did he mean by that?”
Before you can react, Jake gently pulls your hand forward, guiding it toward him and stopping once the chapstick hits his lips. He lets go of your wrist, eyebrows raising, gesturing for you to apply the chapstick for him.
You gulped nervously before applying pressure down, smoothly lathering the chapstick onto Jake’s chapped lips, careful not to reopen any cuts. All the while, you could feel Jake’s stare on your face, slowly following your every movement. The sensation of his unwavering gaze sent shivers down your spine. The world around you faded into the background, leaving only the connection between the two of you, silently speaking volumes in that fleeting moment.
Suddenly, you feel Jake’s hands grab onto your wrist again, except this time, he isn’t gentle. He gripped it, tugging you forward, causing you to drop the chapstick. You had no time to react before you felt Jake’s lips press against yours.
As the weight of the moment fully registered, your eyes widened, nearly popping out of their sockets, as you felt the tender movement of Jake’s lips against yours.
You had fantasized about this moment countless times, and you always imagined how it would feel like to finally kiss Jake. But nothing could compare to how you felt at that moment.
You closed your eyes, drowning yourself in the warm sensation that enveloped you. You could feel the corners of his mouth curl into a gentle smile as he felt your lips begin to move against his.
Kissing Jake was everything you could ever dream of.
Kissing Jake was like running barefoot through a sun-kissed field of dandelions, soft, gentle, and free. Your lips fit perfectly together as if you were made for each other.
A startled gasp escaped your lips as you felt a gentle glide of Jake’s tongue against the seam of your lips, causing your eyes to snap open in surprise. You find yourself staring into Jake’s equally surprised eyes, and for a moment, none of you say anything.
You don’t know who started it, but the two of you broke into a fit of giggles, forehead pressed against each other, releasing the built-up tension that had accumulated from the unexpected kiss.
With a gentle smile on your lips and a sparkle in your eyes, you and Jake exchanged a knowing glance, silently acknowledging the significance of the moment. You both had crossed the line that marked the turning point in your relationship, and yet, neither of you seemed to mind.
Jake pulled away first, thumb swiping at his lips.
“So sweet,” he smirked as his tongue darted out to lick his bottom lip.
You let out a heartfelt laugh as you swat at his arm playfully, “Shut up,” you mumbled, cheeks hurting from smiling so wide.
Jake grins, looking at you, “Let’s go home. I wanna taste all the other chapsticks.”
You couldn’t help but mirror Jake’s grin, heart swelling with love.
