It's so we don't get lost in hubris. If the trekkers did this then they wouldn't complain on twitter about how star trek is "ruined now" because it "used to be good", because like. Hey. No it didn't. We don't come to this show for perfection, we come here for lizard sex.
If there’s a main message about the goal of Starfleet in Star Trek, I think it can be summed up as “Keep Striving for Better.” That is, we need to keep reaching and working for achievement and growth. (Even if, I suppose, that growth and evolution leads to becoming salamanders.) Threshold is an example of both those aspirations, and a glaring reminder that we can probably, at least narratively, continue to do better.
Or, possibly, we are all James T. Kirk in The Final Frontier:
