people confused if songs are about matty or joe but the “went from an oven to a microwave” is pretty cut clear that they both hurt her in similar ways and that the songs are muddled and confusing cause it was confusing for her. we never fully know which one she’s talking about cause they both hurt her so similarly she can weave the pain together

what’s interesting about this album is that she seems to explore every type of lyricism that she’s ever tried. there’s pop. there’s weird. there are folkmore style metaphors. there’s intensely diaristic writing. there are larger stories carefully placed between the lines of specific short narratives. there’s a lot of everything. she is in the weeds and pulled back at the same time. jaime had a lot of discourse about the betty speeches last year and wondered if taylor might’ve chosen a middle ground between fictional narratives and live-streamed public autopsies, and the middle ground turned out to be all of it all the time.

i’m really curious how people villainizing taylor for talking about her experiences handle this stuff in their life. because if someone i knew told me about a relationship, and equated their emotions in that relationship to the stages of grief, i certainly would not invalidate their emotions and call them a liar/hypocrite. taylor being a celebrity does not mean she is incapable of emotion and that her feelings automatically don’t matter. she’s still a human.

i just. did people want her to just swallow this? never speak of it again? pretend that she was never hurt, that it was all fine, that he's perfect?

so much of debut is about taylor observing the people in her life. tied together with a smile, stay beautiful, mary’s song, even cold as you to an extent tell the stories of others, and they’re placed alongside extremely personal songs like a place in this world, the outside, and tim mcgraw among others. you’re seeing someone slowly go from watching others go through life to developing her own emotions and identity—all while immortalizing them and younger versions of herself in her music.

“i don’t owe anyone anything” is one of the most incredibly callous and damaging phrases to enter popular vernacular. you owe everyone kindness and consideration, always. understand the idea of a social contract. you cannot reap the benefits of human society and interaction while maintaining such a cold and thankless attitude about it. i mean you can but you’d be a bad person for it

People trying to pathologize like eating sweets and jerking off is wild. "I stopped doing this thing that feels good and I want more now ?? So this is an addiction and I have to keep avoiding it until the craving goes away" no you just want to enjoy things because you're a human being. Chocolate and porn and whatever aren't, like. Meth. It won't kill you to feel good. You don't have to be a medieval monk

Like yes it's possible to have an unhealthy relationship with whatever gives you the easiest dopamine hit but the thing is that that's more symptomatic of, like. Being depressed. Than pleasure itself being evil and bad for you

If you feel like you're overindulging in 1 thing, the solution is to fill your life with a variety of indulgences, not live in deprivation.
