I wish i could find this one article written in I believe the 90’s that went under the radar on abortion. The author said that the “life” arguments are basically useless on either side and what actually matters is that humans shouldn’t have a right to use other human bodies as a resource without consent no matter how alive or sentient they are, even if they’re on the brink of death you have the right to deny them access to you. It probably was too radical for pro-choice activists back in those days but like…that’s the most robust arguement lol so we need 2 being that back and dead the pontifications and splitting hairs about “life” in my honest onion

A bit of a TLDR for some questions I saw in the notes:

The team that created Glaze is from the University of Chicago. Their names are each listed in full on the Glaze download website. (This group of students/professors did this for their SPRING BREAK 😱 so go give them some love lol)

It is free to download. No, they won’t ask for or raise money from/for this project.(stated by one of the lead professors of the project).

Glaze is designed to protect artists’ STYLE--which a bunch of ai people have been deliberately fine-tuning their models to mimic (and specifically of current living artists--small or big).

It currently does not protect against composition/trace-like theft (as seen when run through img-to-img) but that would be protected by copyright anyway while STYLE is not.

The University Team has stated that they are dedicated to continuing to improve the tool, like fixing bugs (like overheating older computers by taking up lots of energy when Glazing--it currently runs on CPU so they’re trying to change that to GPU, I believe) and expanding the type of protection given to artists (like working against img-to-img theft).

It currently only works directly on your computer (phones not advised due to current overheating issue, no tablets, or iPads, and no website runthrough since that would be insecure to breaches/scraping/hacks)

It currently works best on painterly artwork, but can still be used on other forms (team is working on improving this)

IT WORKS BY calculating the changes each image needs for the best protection against style theft by AI, and adds tiny changes throughout the piece, so that your style will, for example, confuse the ai into seeing van gogh. But the ai thieves will see a regular image in your style, feeding it into their model labeled as your work (thus starting the “data poisoning”).

Do not post the original unGlazed piece of your artwork after posting your Glazed version (obviously)

The Team worked directly with over 1,000 artists that were being impacted by the ai theft. Because the team listened to those artists, Glaze accounts for regular art thieves too (i.e. Glaze can’t be removed/cropped etc. like signatures or watermarks when reposted. It’s just part of the image, so even if it ends up on another site and scraped, the Glazing is still in effect)

When you run your artwork through Glaze, no information is sent back to the Team. (Aka, no scraping on their part. The app receives information from the Team (like updates) but no information from you is given to them through the app. Basically Team servers ---> You and NOT Team servers <--->You) One-way data street.

Brief misunderstanding happened over an open-source license for the front-end part of the app. (Used open-source coding for front-end, not knowing that code’s use-license states it is only for other open-source uses, not closed-source (the back-end code of the app is private to prevent counter-counter measure developments)). The Team took down the app until they replaced the front-end code with code written from scratch by the team. They are now not in violation of that open-source license since they are no longer using it. (you have 30 days to remedy a license breach once informed; they did so in 2)

The Team is currently in touch with Japanese artists to better expand the tool for use to protect their art styles

From what I understand of it, Glaze is an AI tool designed to be anti-AI (Think Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 2: one Terminator robot vs. all the other Terminators 😂)

Incredible new thing happening with Elon today: he fired a disabled Twitter engineer for prima facie discriminatory reasons, trashed talked the ex-employee on Twitter and then discovered this employee came to Twitter by way of an acquisition of that employee's software start up and the sale contains a clause that if Twitter terminates his employment it has to pay him 100 million for the software he developed. The fact Elon Musk might have to personally sell of Tesla stock to meet this obligation has caused Tesla's share price to dip yet again.

Also Musk deleted his tweet trashing the employee but it's preserved and being reposted by multiple Twitter users, at least until Musk can figure out a way to nuke the screen grabs from orbit.

hold up im reading more about the lionfish thing and this one island in Honduras has had such a huge problem with lionfish that the measures they have taken include

• getting special exemption from the Honduran government to allow divers access to harpoons and spears which are otherwise illegal in fishing

• public campaign to teach people how to prepare and eat lionfish (apparently they are very tasty once the poisonous spines are removed) (but watch out)

• holding lionfish combination hunting competition and cookout (reportedly they killed and cooked 1,700 in a day) (someone killed 60 of them with a rubber band spear gun???)

• most recently and apparently out of desperation, the divers in charge of culling the lionfish in the Roatan Marine Park just started. feeding the lionfish they killed to sharks. bc what else are you gonna do with it

• the sharks don’t seem to notice or be affected by the poison and begin hanging out with the divers

• the sharks then were seen hunting and killing the lionfish on their own

like this is nuts to me sorry. the sharks just had to be shown “hey this is food, did you know?? you can eat these!! here try one!!” we are possibly altering an entire foodchain bc we like feeding the big ocean wolves

Absolutely need a Netflix series instead of movies. Imagine 45-hour episodes of Enola solving a case and each season there is one big overarching case that comes together for the season finale. We get Sherlock and Enola working together on some cases featuring John Watson, Holmesbury filler episodes, Edith and Eudoria check in from time to time. It would be perfect.

Lady Cecyly’s cases are done in the first season and she becomes a recurring character who is one of Enola’s friend and has a rivalry with Tewksbury about which one of them pass the more time with Enola.

I will be honest, I had totally forgotten that a few years ago, Andrew Tate had mocked anime fans.

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out, because I was not a communist...

the thing that really gets me about certain popular but incorrect posts which cross my dash of the “scientists were baffled until they talked to Normal People, who told them what was actually going on! ohohohoho, those silly ivory tower academics!” type is that aside from promoting a tiresome anti-intellectual narrative, they’re incredibly disrespectful to the actual process of science. which involves - brace yourselves - people being wrong. a lot, actually! science requires us to be wrong a lot! we put forward hypotheses and then we test them and most of the time we’re wrong. but sometimes we’re wrong in ways that move us closer to the truth. note that those stories exist because researchers did, uh, talk to people and change their theories when they acquired new information. if they hadn’t, the story wouldn’t exist at all. 

it’s also disrespectful to the non-academics who contributed - by reducing it to “oh, everybody knew this, it was just the silly researchers who never asked” it minimises the insight offered by the external experts (because they are experts! in their own fields!). it does actually take expertise and insight to put together archaeological discoveries and craft knowledge. if it was easy everybody would be doing it, you know?  

none of which is to say that there aren’t ~issues~ in modern science and academia with whose knowledge we privilege and people clinging to theories because they don’t respect or like the source of the evidence against them. but being wrong is not in and of itself the problem there. and turning the process of research into a stick to beat people with is a great way to directly impede research. 

literally the scientific method is “hey, I have an idea about how X works. i’m gonna do everything I can think of (and can get a budget for) to prove myself wrong.”

Science is not a list of immutable facts about the universe. It is a self-correcting process we use to create better and better models of reality.
