Being a Jewish historian is really just like: This was built by Jewish slaves. There’s an unmarked mass grave of Jews who were killed in a pogrom under that town. This was built with money stolen from Jews. That painting was stolen from a Jewish family who died in the Shoah. That church/mosque was a synagogue that was converted after all the Jews were expelled. Those houses belonged to Jewish families for centuries.

I fucking hate the current political climate because my first thought would normally be "fucking shit thats bad" but now its "I hope op isnt pro isreal" the same way that whenever I see a cis woman talking about gender in any way my immediate first thought is "I hope shes not a terf." Like, I hate immediately being suspicious of people.

The way you saw a Jew talking about antisemitism without mentioning Israel once and your first thought was “I hope you’re not pro Israel…” 😐.

People are really telling on themselves huh

also, I do not mean to drag the commenter specifically or derail the post (which indeed, has nothing to do with israel), but in general i think it’s worth pointing out:

if your anti-zionist activism demands that you erase jewish history—that is, if you think that Palestinians deserve rights and restitution in their homeland if and only if jewish history magically disappears or is “debunked”—then your anti-zionism is actually just antisemitism, and your palestinian solidarity is both morally bankrupt and deeply reactionary. you know who does this same thing? religious nationalists in israel who systematically erase palestinian history and national/cultural identity in order to justify their obscene crimes. palestinians deserve liberation, restitution, and political equality in their homeland because that’s where they live, and they are human. full stop.

none of us should be modeling our liberatory activism on the tactics of ethnonationalists or religious nationalists.

we're about 4 years post-reylo and i think white fandom has come full circle into openly acting like racism and misogyny don't play a huge role in the way that we create and consume fictional media

about once a month i see a post about how the purpose of media isn't to teach us things or represent us or be relatable. it's just about telling a compelling story. this is certainly sometimes true, but it also takes for granted that every piece of media has the same goal and that "we" all are equally represented or catered to. and if i'm being honest it's starting to sound like an excuse to not examine 1) any purposeful themes woven in by the creator or 2) underlying biases in the white/male/cis etc etc gaze that color either the media itself or the way we as fans interact with it

i specifically frame this as a "post-reylo" backlash because this take often conflates, for example, people who expect everything to have the morality of a disney movie to bipoc who point out fandom and creators' demonstrable favoritism of abusive and fascist white men characters and ships.

i think most of us accept that many white women will always want to get bad-boy-kidnapped by kylo ren and daemon targaryen types. but it's people in this demographic who most often equate statements like "i prefer media that is darker in tone," "i prefer media that explores flawed characters," and "depiction does not equal endorsement" with "it's okay to completely ignore any unintended subliminal messaging whatsoever" and "criticizing the depiction of a controversial topic that may negatively effect or misrepresent real marginalized people means you lack reading comprehension."

the way that characters of color are vilified or glorified, sidelined or centered, is a major and valid concern. that's why race bending is so often inauthentic at best and disastrous at worst, and why something like "finnrey vs reylo" was never just about ships. it goes beyond "villains are just more interesting" and "i love flawed characters" if fandom is repeatedly flocking to white fascists as faves while simultaneously ignoring or demonizing, hypersexualizing, mammifying, and generally giving personality transplants to bipoc for breathing wrong. the consistent woobifying of these men shows precisely what is widely deemed "relatable" and "interesting" in fandom even if we'd rather all pretend it's about our intellectual investment in deep and complex character study

hey so i'm seeing a lot of tags on this post like this

and i hate to always be that person but i feel like everyone sighing dreamily about this lighter should probably know that it's a zippo from the vietnam war — this particular lighter was sold at auction in 2012 as part of a large lot of lighters (archived page here)

during the vietnam war in particular these lighters became so associated with their usage in search-and-destroy missions, in which american soldiers would set fire to villages suspected of harboring viet cong, that the GIs nicknamed them "zippo missions" or "zippo raids." this connection became so ingrained that "to zippo" became a verb ("to zippo a village") and the whole war was sometimes referred to as "the zippo war." some of the most well known and horrific images from the war involve american soldiers lighting villages on fire in this way:

obviously there's no way of knowing who this particular lighter belonged to (beyond probably someone named butch) or what it was used for, and collecting vietnam war zippos is in itself a popular hobby among war memorabilia enthusiasts, but there is a lot of history that is closely linked to these lighters that isn't exactly cute and sapphic and romantic. also from the way people are talking about this, it seems like most of them probably do not know this history, so. do with this information what you will.

tl;dr imo any time you see an image of an old object with no historical information attached, it's worth doing a quick reverse image search to look into where that object comes from and the historical context in which it was made and used before deciding to romanticize it purely for the Aesthetic
