we're about 4 years post-reylo and i think white fandom has come full circle into openly acting like racism and misogyny don't play a huge role in the way that we create and consume fictional media
about once a month i see a post about how the purpose of media isn't to teach us things or represent us or be relatable. it's just about telling a compelling story. this is certainly sometimes true, but it also takes for granted that every piece of media has the same goal and that "we" all are equally represented or catered to. and if i'm being honest it's starting to sound like an excuse to not examine 1) any purposeful themes woven in by the creator or 2) underlying biases in the white/male/cis etc etc gaze that color either the media itself or the way we as fans interact with it
i specifically frame this as a "post-reylo" backlash because this take often conflates, for example, people who expect everything to have the morality of a disney movie to bipoc who point out fandom and creators' demonstrable favoritism of abusive and fascist white men characters and ships.
i think most of us accept that many white women will always want to get bad-boy-kidnapped by kylo ren and daemon targaryen types. but it's people in this demographic who most often equate statements like "i prefer media that is darker in tone," "i prefer media that explores flawed characters," and "depiction does not equal endorsement" with "it's okay to completely ignore any unintended subliminal messaging whatsoever" and "criticizing the depiction of a controversial topic that may negatively effect or misrepresent real marginalized people means you lack reading comprehension."
the way that characters of color are vilified or glorified, sidelined or centered, is a major and valid concern. that's why race bending is so often inauthentic at best and disastrous at worst, and why something like "finnrey vs reylo" was never just about ships. it goes beyond "villains are just more interesting" and "i love flawed characters" if fandom is repeatedly flocking to white fascists as faves while simultaneously ignoring or demonizing, hypersexualizing, mammifying, and generally giving personality transplants to bipoc for breathing wrong. the consistent woobifying of these men shows precisely what is widely deemed "relatable" and "interesting" in fandom even if we'd rather all pretend it's about our intellectual investment in deep and complex character study
