The main reason I think Goncharov worked better as a piece of mass produced fiction over Zepotha really does come down to the basic concepts of each piece. Goncharov had a concrete idea from the start, it was a lost 1973 mafia film directed by Martin Scorsese. Meaning that people new to the joke could more easily understand how to add to the story. Martin Scorsese has an unique style to his films, he has directed multiple mafia/crime dramas that people could pull from to create a cohesive story that sounds plausible for him to have made. People were able to come up with characters (and the actors who played them) and an actual plot by just studying the genre and finding what would work. Zepotha is just marketing a single artist's work under the idea of "an 80's horror film", no director, no actual genre other than "horror" (what kind of horror? Slasher seems to be the most popular, but Zepotha sounds more like a giallo style supernatural horror to me). There's no director listed, so no one knows how this film would play out or look. Because horror is such a vague descriptor here, people are throwing just about everything to the wall to see what sticks, which slows down the actual storytelling potential. People are making up characters first, before a plot leading to there being like 50 named characters, but any actual story is lost. Tldr; Goncharov found it's footing much easier and faster by starting out with a concrete idea, while Zepotha is stumbling because it's vagueness makes it hard for anyone to agree on basic things like story or characters.

That's kinda of where I am on this whole thing. The fact that it started as a marketing gimmick probably meant it was never going to really be anything other than marketing. And I can't help but be a little sad at what it could have been had it started off differently. Fake media and especially fake lost media is so fascinating to me! To see people with this drive to create and build on one another's' ideas fills me with a sense of awe and inspiration. And to see that drive be used poorly or without purpose, makes me feel a little sad at the lost potential. I don't hate Zepotha. I'm just looking at it and imagining what might have been had more thought been put into it.

Zepotha, by Dario Argento, originally set to air as a made for television movie, it was superseded by news reports of commercial flight DC-9 carrying 77 passengers and 4 crew members exploding in flight above the Tyrrhenian Sea on July 27th 1980. It never aired and the original production company folded shortly afterwards, leaving the rights to re-air the movie in perpetual limbo due to poor record keeping. It's associated with the crash led it generally to be regarded as a "cursed" movie, which Argento and most of the actors wanted to quietly put behind themselves as quickly as possible.

The plot details as known are that the story thematically revolves around twins and reflections, in part a kind of criticism of the media of film itself, and the necessity of light in both the act of creation and it's reversal as an act of destruction.

The protagonist is a young artist studying in a prestigious school, who is obsessed with painting images of herself in various states of death or injury. Meanwhile, a killer is stalking other young women, and ruthlessly slaughtering them using a sickle. One of the most famous stills from the movie is the sickle raised, covered in blood, so that it lines up with a full moon at night. Elsewhere in the college, a professor of psychic genetics is engaging in a project to show how genetically identical laboratory animals seem to share a psychic emotional bond and can feel one another's pain.

The protagonist falls under suspicion when the strict headmistress of her dormitory sees her paintings and recognizes details from the killings, bringing this to the attention of the police. As the movie progresses, the killer seems to be growing obsessed by the protagonist who is, herself, falling into a spiraling hallucinatory fugue because she is unable to account for her whereabouts during the crimes or how she knows the details.

The cast and crew have never willingly revealed the conclusion although most film scholars generally have pieced together that the killer is a lost and disfigured twin of the protagonist who is stopped by the protagonist severing her own hand thereby psychically causing her twin to lose her hand as well.

Some conspiracies claim that a few rare prints exist, and any time they are shown a new air disaster occurs, attributing catastrophes like the Challenger explosion or 9-11 to "Zepotha's Curse" but this is generally regarded as nonsense by serious scholars.

I really love how people were attacking Neil Gaiman and saying he was homophobic and then he wrote a second season of Good omens where almost nobody is straight.

I hope those people wallow in shame.

We were actually pointing out how he wrote Aziraphale to look and sound gay as shit in the book and experience several instances of homophobia and then called gay people foolish for 30+ years for thinking Aziraphale was gay and now is trying to lie and tell people that he actually never said that even tho we were literally there <3 hope this helps

This is just like when Neil patted himself on the back for including black characters in the first season even though people pointed out pretty quickly that the choices for who he made black and how they were depicted compared to white characters was questionable at best.

It's almost like having good representation takes more work than simply having minorities exist in your story!
