The most tragic part of the entire Charlie/Dean dynamic is that his hugs have always been comfort and family for them. Charlie and Dean have a unique relationship but this last episode, it was changed in an unprecedented way. Their hug wasn’t comfort and family- it was pain, a little fear, and the condition that Dean get this darkness under control. This is not to say that the love between Dean and Charlie is at all diminished. But it is to say that it is strained because of this experience. Charlie’s hug with Sam holds the comfort that is customary… but the old relationship she shared with Dean is broken and Dean’s going to have to go to hell and back to repair it.
