Quick headcanon about Kryptonian/Kryptonese

Its a very vague, general, and very poetic language despite being a very scientific society.

For example, (according to Kryptonian Dictionary) the word “El” by itself roughly translates to the word, “Sun”. But because the society worshipped their sun, Rao, it would be with great Narcissim to think that one could have the surname of “Sun”. So the House of El then roughly translates to, The House of Star(s).

But their house motto is “El Mayarah”, which - according to Kara - means “Stronger Together” but “El” doesn’t mean “Stronger”… and “Mayarah” roughly translates to “band together”… So it really means, “stars band together.”

I headcanon that Kara was only able to give a very loose, very shorthand translation. Because she’s not sure how else to fully capture the phrase, how to fully give the full description without it losing the meaning.

Because Krypton is a logical, scientific society - and when the House of El is a mostly scientific house, then they know that the stars are really just distant suns, often dying suns, often dead suns - and yet they still shine in the night. They also know that the stars can be used to map out your location. You could be lost, but just look up at the night sky and look at the stars, and then you realize you’re not alone no matter where you are, no matter what planet you’re on.

So, on Krypton, the complete phrase would be something like a proverb - translated into something like, “One Star is enough to light the day, but Stars Band Together to light up the darkest of nights.” - It’s meant to say that by yourself, you can only achieve so much. But with others? You achieve so much more.

It’s meant to transcend distance. It’s meant to transcend time. It’s meant to transcend death. No matter where, no matter when, no matter how.

On Earth, in English, the best way to translate it is just simply, “Stronger Together.”

When Kara says, “El Mayarah” she really means to say, “I’m with you no matter what, no matter when, no matter where….”

And so when Kara looks at her house emblem, she remembers her house, The House of El - The House of Stars. She remembers their motto, El Mayarah, the Kryptonian phrase for dead stars that still light up the darkest of nights. She remembers happier times with her family. She remembers that she’s been given a new family.

(And that’s where she succeeds the house motto where Clark fails; he believes it’s his sole duty to be strong for everyone, she knows she’s stronger with everyone.)

I will forever cherish this interpretation. I just love it.

Scientifically poetic and pure beauty.

Hate have say this but

NOT TOUCH OTHER PEOPLE DISABILITY THING PLEASE

Should not even have be please, should be good and know but somehow not.

Person in Aiden class before today *grab* Aiden laptop with AAC and Aiden had *physical* grab back because person start press random button on Aiden AAC.

Then! Person get *mad* because Aiden not want person play with Aiden *voice* like *toy*

This not good, and wish person know more good but guess Aiden have say too.

i remember a couple years ago, i saw on reddit a post where a person had made 3D-printed spikes they could put on their wheelchair and take off as needed.

in the comments, people were complaining about how that was illegal and the damage it could cause to someone.

Yeah, it's real damaging, you're the victim. Not the person who you just tried to push and pretty much physically assault. /sarc

Aids like AAC and mobility aids are often seen as an extension of a person, a part of their body for them. As Aiden said in their post, the computer they use for AAC is their voice. A cane might be one of your legs. Hearing aids are one's ears and glasses could be your eyes.

Fellow abled-bodied people, I am begging you, please respect the bodies of disabled people as we do other abled-bodied people.

Thanks I learned more.

Okay, so this is really cool! You have this phenomenon where some plants grow edible appendages to their seeds to entice ants to carry them underground where they can safely sprout. And then you have wasps which lay their eggs on the leaves, stems, and other parts of plants and trigger the growth of galls (swellings) which both feed and protect the wasp larvae until they reach maturity.

The boy who was watching the ants noticed they were taking wasp galls underground, too. Further exploration found that the wasp larvae were unharmed inside the galls; the only thing the ants had eaten were edible appendages similar to those on the seeds they collected. The wasp larvae stayed safe inside the ant nest, feeding on their galls, until it was time to emerge and head back out to the surface.

So it turns out that the edible portions of the galls have the same sorts of fatty acids as the edible parts of the seeds. And those fatty acids are also found in dead insects. Scientists think that the wasps evolved a way to make the galls they created mimic the edible portions of the seeds to get the ants to collect the galls. This isn't the only example of wasps making use of ants as caretakers for their young, but it's a really fascinating example thereof--especially if you consider ants evolved from wasps at least 100 million years ago.

This is fun!

We need to better educate kids on the importance of animals that are typically hated because otherwise you end up with adults who think hating wasps is a personality.

I can understand defending beds but wasps :/

I’m very much going to encourage you to drop the “I hate wasp” trend of the 2010’s and instead go appreciate and learn about the wonderful world of wasps.

Because they are just so many species of them. They’ve been around since at least the Jurassic period (~145 mya) and they’re one of the most diverse groups of insects because of it.

For example I just went and caught these two wasps in my backyard one afternoon. They’re both tiny Ichneumonoidea wasps (also known as Darwin wasps) and are the most diverse wasp groups. They don’t sting, but instead have these unmodified long ovipositors (as stingers are just modified ovipositors which again, is just a beautiful bit of evolution right there). They use them to drill into wood or other insects / spiders in order to lay their legs.

One on the left may be Braconidae and one on the right Ichneumonidae.

And we found these two tiny cuckoo wasps (so small we had to put them under a microscope to get a good photo) in our lab a while ago. The photos don’t do them justice because they’re just stunningly shiny which is why they’re also called jewel wasps or emerald wasps.

People get stung by one paper wasp as a kid and need to tell me on my posts like I care. Get over it and appreciate life on earth.

Like this: my insect hotel has this mason wasp (Paralastor sp.) building her nest using this resin (?) that looks like glitter.

This is.... Absurdly cute. What the fuck.

It's worth noting that the reason the beaver wants the water to be deeper in the first place is that the Beaver is using the deep water as a pantry:

All summer and fall, beavers gather up branches with the leaves they actually eat, and store it in the deep end of the Pond, where the cold water and limited oxygen keep the leaves fresh all winter, so when it's negative 20 outside, a beaver can take a dip out of it's lodge, grab some refrigerated leaves in the (relatively) warmer water and go back to it's cozy little nap hole while everything else is out there suffering and eating bark or the like.

So it's less "there's a leak in my house" and more "OH SHIT THE FRIDGE!!"

Got pulled over because he "saw someone flash their lights at me" and it made him "think something was going on". After he ran my paperwork and did multiple full walk-arounds of my car, he decided everything was in order and I was free to go. I just wanted to get home from work.

Living in MD got pulled over when I pulled into my landlady's [100%, rich, suburban] community and questioned what my purpose was there. "I live here" was not an acceptable answer and I ended up needing to call my landlady to talk to the officer and convince them that I really did live there, in her basement inlaw apartment, courtesy of her granddaughter. When he finally let me go he told me he "actually" pulled me over because he "thought [my] headlights were out" but on "second glance" they were just fine. Dunno how you can mistake headlights being on or off.

And I know I've told the story of when one of my elderly white neighbors called the police on me for training my dog in a public use field and how even the cop that showed up thought the call was stupid and racist.

My dad got pulled over when I was still in a carseat because they thought it was "suspicious" that a grown man would have such a young child with him on a school day. He was driving me back to school from a doctor's appointment. They made him get our of the car, lean against it, and searched both him and the car because they "smelled something" while he did his best to keep me calm and tell me that it was going to be okay. I was too young to understand what happened at the time. I just remember he was furious the entire ride back to school, and he was still mad when I got off the bus that afternoon.

It really is just Like This, being black in this country.
