Yeah I'm (and very likely most every other nerd out there) will still call it 616

No, you won’t–because you’ll be wrong, and that will be damaging to your fan cried. This would be like insisting that the Post-Crisis DC Earth was Earth-1. It might be what you want, but it isn’t so, and like in that case, you will eventually come to accept the new normal.

On a different note, how do you get the right creative team on a book? I'm thinking particularly of the superb Deathlok series, which I'm really enjoying...

Casting a book, if you’re starting from scratch and it’s not a situation where a creator has come forth with a pitch, is one of the real alchemical processes of being an Editor. It’s not entirely something that can be taught, as it relies on being able to extrapolate based on previous work what creators might work well together and might have the right approach for whatever material you’re trying to do.

In the case of the new DEATHLOK, that series originated when I found out from the AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. team that they were going to be doing a version of the character on the show, and that they were basing their approach somewhat on the McDuffie/Wright/Guice/Cowan series that I had worked on decades ago. I saw a way to pick up Michael Collins from where he’d last been left and to do something that, while it wouldn’t be the same as what the show was doing, would likely be complementary.

So in casting, I reached out to Nathan Edmondson based on the work he’s been doing on BLACK WIDOW and PUNISHER as well as his WHO IS JAKE ELLIS series. For the particular tone and style of series I had in mind, Nathan seemed to fit the bill. (And then, as we developed the series, the initial idea changed dramatically, as witness the fact that the book focuses on new character Henry Hayes, rather than Michael Collins. That’s all Nathan’s work.)

And Mike Perkins was almost a no-brainer, in that he’s wanted to do a DEATHLOK series since the day he first set foot in Marvel, and hasn’t been shy about saying so. Additionally, based on the work he’d done with me on CAPTAIN AMERICA and other things such as the UNION JACK series he did with Christos Gage, I figured that he too could hit the sort of tone and vibe that we were going for. It also helped that Nathan and Mike had met at conventions previously and talked about working together.

Is Nathan and Mike the “right” team? There’s no absolute way to know that, as we’ll never get to see exactly what some other combination of creators might have done with the same starting point and same feedback from me. But they were the right creators insofar as I was concerned, which is why I hired them for the project in the first place.

Do you find noticeable differences between fans when you were writing Avenger Titles compared to the current X-men Titles? #AVENGERFANSVSX-MENFANS

Avatar

There is no versus. the audience crossover is huge. most fans of one franchise dabble in or are a big fan of the other.

and 99% of comic readers are fans and are just having a good time and loving the constant chaos of the Marvel universe. 99% of us are here to have a good time.

my perspective of the small differences is a little skewed because while I was in charge of the avengers they were on a ten-year trajectory that led to the movie. so there was an ascension for the avengers franchise that was very exciting for the creators and the readers, and the publisher :-)  I’m not taking credit for it I’m just saying it was there and it was exciting. so even the most critical eye had a lot to celebrate.

also, and I will take some credit for this, we were casting a spotlight on characters that were always perceived as C list but were revealed to be fan favorites for decades. that was cool.  the reaction, to this day, is insanely cool.

the only real difference is that a small portion of the diehard X-Men fans, and I’m telling you it’s a small portion but sometimes a rather loud portion, are very paranoid about the books and their future and no matter what the evidence illustrates they won’t believe anything else. I never had that on the avengers. it is very odd.

it’s also weird that some fans of the X-Men books, which are about tolerance, are so intolerant to other peoples perspectives. I hear from people all the time who can’t enjoy a good conversation online about the X-Men because someone is always battering them for actually enjoying something published after 1987.

kind of missing the point of the entire franchise.

Did you do any interviews for all new X-men and uncanny x-men at NYCC? I haven't seen any of them on the major comic sites.

Addressing the rumor that Marvel has a mandate not to create more X-Men so as not to support Fox’s film franchise. “If you’ve been reading my book, it’s mostly new characters,” Bendis joked. “And Fox spent a lot of money on the Powers pilot they never showed, so I don’t mind giving them Goldballs.”

These interviews answer at least 60 of the excellent X-Men questions that I got in my queue today. enjoy.
