maybe just a little bit like myrrh

always thinking about the production of hamlet i saw at the pop up globe a couple of years ago where everyone was costumed in typical shakespearean dress and the set was fairly minimal BUT! they gave polonius an iphone. it was like a running gag that his ringtone kept going off when hamlet or claudius were trying to speak and they would get more and more impatient with him every time. the cast had perfect comedic timing and it was such a perfect modernisation of typical shakespeare humour

but oh my God. the nervous laughter that rippled through the audience when his phone went off behind the tapestry. the heavy silence that followed, interrupted only by the incessant chime of polonius’ ringtone and a muffled “shit, shit!” while he tried to decline the call. it keeps ringing even after hamlet has already put his sword through him. hamlet picks it up in his bloody hands and ends the call, puts it back in polonius’ grasp before turning back to face gertrude.

hands down the best set up and pay-off of any addition to a shakespeare play i have ever witnessed

Mine to destroy. Without my unmaking last millenium’s forests choke your hills. I make clogless the wheel of return. Through me seedlings rise where the strangler fell. I alone, eating wood, am the gate of the springtime cavalcade.

On Halloween at our friends house we met a girl who works at the Seattle zoo and she told us the elephant loves Chex mix but only if every pretzel has been picked out and if this largest land mammal on earth finds one tiny little pretzel she will throw it on the ground and then step on it

i read the phrase “heist movie set in the first century CE” on twitter and, like, please:

they’re plotting to steal a million sesterces from the imperial treasury. Vespasian is emperor. there’s at least one wrist sundial. anachronistic and silly gadgets abound. everyone goes by Marcus. there’s a high-speed chariot chase scene.

this is going around again so people are tagging it with references to various Astérix-related media & i realize that’s my fault for not saying exactly how i want it to be shot. I want it to be shot exactly like a modern heist movie - quick cuts, lens flares, the edges of things weirdly sharply defined, etc. there’s a scene where everyone gets fancy new clothes and obviously it’s expensive togas, which don’t look that different to modern eyes, but the movie treats it exactly like you would the scene where people get sharp new suits. none of the incongruities are ever addressed.

Publius: “your purple stripe is two finger-widths wider than mine.”

Sextus: “I’m an equestrian with military service, standing for election as a tribune.”

Publius: “I look better in purple, though.”

Sextus: “You’re not even old enough to be a quaestor, much less a tribune.”

Enter SEVERUS from the dressing room.  He’s older with a white beard, in a pure white toga with a stripe four inches wide on his toga.  He wears the Flamen Dialis, a hat that looks rather like a 1950s propeller-beanie, made of leather, with a golden spike rising from the crown of his head.   TAILOR is with him, being obsequious.

Tailor: I’m sorry your eminence, I didn’t know we would have to outfit a member of the college of pontiffs today.”

Severus: That’s fine.  Can you make their purple stripes narrower?

Anonymous asked:

hey boss, just "accidentally" stabbed my "hand". got any cursed blood facts?

great news anon, as a human your blood is already among the most cursed on the planet!

see, most people don’t realize this, but mammal blood is actually completely unique among vertebrates. if you put a drop of mammal blood on a microscope slide next to a drop of lizard blood, you would be able to tell them apart instantly!

how? simple- mammalian blood cells don’t have a nucleus!

the nucleus is a dark mass at the center of a cell that tells it what to do and lets it reproduce by splitting itself in two- and every other major vertebrate group on the planet has nucleated blood cells.

BUT NOT MAMMALS. (these cells are NAKED somebody please GET THEM SOME PANTS.)

at some point in their 200+ million years of evolutionary history, mammals discovered that if you force your red blood cells to drop their nucleus and turn into pink cheerios, they can focus on carrying oxygen and ONLY carrying oxygen! this means that mammal blood is much more efficient than fish or reptile or even bird blood at carrying oxygen liter-for-liter, though at the cost of lugging around some extra internal organs and having to make new blood inside of your bones. what a steal!

maybe that’s why all the stock photo blood researchers are making that face.

I'm sorry but those nucleated red blood cells are the ones that look cursed

Nope, reptile blood is just that cursed that even the thrombocytes are nucleated lmao. They don't have the same megakaryocyte fragmentation system that (at least) humans have.

Which, if you ask me, makes lizard blood Demonically Cursdt.

Thanks for the correction and also

What the hell

Man it cracks me up every time medblr learns about animals

I have ADHD. I know my limits. One species was all I could manage.

Vetblr: different species are different

Medblr:

(I love you guys really it's just a constant source of entertainment)

Animal physiology: *exists*
Medblr, collectively: Hmmm don't like that

my fave thing about being alive is that there is nothing that cannot be learned. tapestry weaving, astrophysics, swimming. music, theremin, singing. cutting your own hair, dancing, quantum mathematics. sewing, philosophy, social skills. knowledge is divine, but sharing it is human !!!
