A Treat and a Tease, my lovelies

So, for day 1 of Mass Effect Relationship Week ( @cactuarkitty) , me and my writing partner in crime decided to unleash a little bit of something we’ve been working on, because it’s all about the hello and the goodbye.

Hello, Goodbye, Hello Again, by potionsmaster and @cdrkateshepard

Rating: T for totally foul language, oh em gee, like.  What evahrrr… Also, some violence.  Per the norm.  heh.  But no sex.  This is just them saying ‘hello’

A/N: This is a little side piece, a little sun’in-sun’in for an AU we’re working on and I heart it so damn much, I’m really, really, really excited to tease it.  So NYAH  *sticks tongue out*  suffer with me, y’all.  ALSO.  A/b/o dynamics.  Humans and werewolves.  Deal with it.

Second A/N:  Mark is my Shepard, but he’s not the role of ‘Shepard’ in this one.  So his last name is ‘Schaefer’.  Which is German for ‘Shepard’, lol.

SSV Shanghai, 2178

“I thought you said you were going to get a desk job.  This is not a desk job.  This is the direct opposite of a desk job.  Mark.”

Mark sighed, rubbing the scar bisecting his hairline.  This was not how this call was supposed to be going.  “Babe, you gotta understand.  This is my shot for getting N7.  This goes well, I get promoted and with that comes a pay upgrade and my pick of missions.  Which will eventually, yes, include a desk job.  But for right now, this is how I gotta get what you want.  You want breathin’ room, both financially and in housing, this is how I get that.”  A shadow had covered the door a moment ago; maybe whoever it was heard what was going on and decided to come back later.

“Heaven forbid you actually spend time with your wife, or your son,” she snapped.  “What was it, three months this time?  Before you got antsy to get back in the ‘action’ again?  Don’t deny it, I know you volunteered to go before leave was over.”  His wife tossed her blonde hair impatiently over her shoulder, scowling.  “You couldn’t wait to get out of here and leave us behind again.”

“That’s not it at all and you know it,” he shot back, annoyed.  The shadow from the door shuffled itself further in the room.  So much for them leaving.  “Can you at least put Eli on?  I’d like to be able to say, ‘hello, goodbye’ before goin’ dark.”

“It’s passed his bedtime,” she said primly.  “I don’t want to disturb him.  What?”  A small voice sounded from behind her as she whipped around to look at its source.  “Eli, what’re you doing out of bed?  Mommy put you down a half hour ago.”

“I wasn’t sleeping and I heard you talking to Daddy…wanted to say ‘hi’.  Hi, Daddy!”  A sleepy, dirty blonde boy with bright blue eyes shuffled on screen.  “When are you comin’ home?”

“Hey, buddy…” Mark said, softening.  No matter anything else, any time he saw or talked to his son he thought things were never as bad as they had seemed before.  “Soon, I hope.  I just have to take care of these bad guys first, then I’ll be back.”

“Why can’t you be home now?  There’s weres in the closet and they’re trying to get me.”

“Naw, that’s not true.  ‘Member?  I took ‘em all with me.  They’re here on the ship.  Besides, they don’t live in closets.”  He bit back a grin as he heard a suppressed snort behind him; it was kinda funny.  Kid logic at its best.

“Oh, my god, they’re on the ship with you?” the woman broke in, disgusted. “Hope they have them chained and collared in the cargo hold.”

“Amie…” he sighed, “We’ve been over this.  They’re people. And they don’t need to be chained like fuc-um.  Fudgin’…animals.  They’re crazy good shock troops, though.  That’s what they’re here for.  More packs on board here than I’m used to workin’ with, but.  Y’know.  That’s how it goes.”

“Yeah, well, make sure you don’t share a water bottle with one.”

“For the love of…It’s not somethin’ you just catch, babe.” “It’s not just the lycanthropy I’m worried about.”

“You gotta be kiddin’ me.  Every person on board this ship has been through a health check and is cleared for duty.  You know that.”  He thought he heard a disgusted scoff from the other person in the room at that.  Agreed.

“Fine,” she sniffed.  “I worry.  So does Eli.  Don’t you, pal?”  The boy rubbed his eyes tiredly while he nodded.

“Come back, Daddy.  I miss you.”

“Miss you too, bud.  Shouldn’t be a long as last time.  Those bad guys are the same ones that hurt your uncles and grandparents.  So I’m gonna make sure they can’t hurt anybody else anymore.  Then I’ll be home.  Got it?”

“Got it.”

“That’s my boy.  Don’t worry.  Nothin’s been able to take me out yet.  And I don’t plan to let that change.  So far so good.  Right?”  He held his fist up to the camera, Eli matching on his end of the screen.  “That’s right.”

“Bye, Daddy.”

“Bye…”  His throat tightened a bit as Eli wandered back to his bedroom and Amie pursed her lips at him again.

“You’re being cruel.”

“How in the hell am I bein’ cruel?”

“Don’t make promises you don’t intend to keep,” she snapped. “Christ.  Half the time I think you deliberately take the craziest missions you can on the off-chance you’ll die.  Newsflash, Mark.  They’re dead.  You trying to kill yourself in combat isn’t going to do anything to change that.”  She sighed impatiently, shaking her head.  “You know what?  I’m done for tonight.  I can’t.”

“Amie, I’m not really sure what you’re lookin’ for right now.  You want me to get more money and a bigger place, but you don’t want me to do my fuckin’ job to enable me to get it.  You say I’m never there, but when I am, you don’t want to be in the same room as me half the time.  You want me to be more involved with Eli, and then when I am, you try to make it so we never get to spend time together.  Make up your damn mind, woman.”

“If you were half the Alpha you’re supposed to be, none of this would be an issue.  But you got your kid and you have your omega to look pretty on your arm, and that’s all you need.  Right?”

“That is not true and you know it,” he ground out, jaw clenched.  “I have been there every damn time you needed me.  Even before he was born.”

“Yeah, and I trapped you.  Right?  Typical omega, trying to find any old Alpha to breed and bond with.”

“Listen up, and listen well, Amie.  It was not your fault, or my fault, he came about, and I do not blame you for any of it.  I blame the doctor for not tellin’ you the med interactions.  But he’s here, and so’m I.  Ever since the day you came back to me and said you were pregnant, every move I have ever made has been for you two.  So I’d appreciate you not puttin’ words and thoughts in my mouth for you to die on a martyr sword, thank you very much.”

“Whatever,” she muttered.  “Come home or don’t.  I don’t care anymore.”

The screen flickered dark, call terminated.  “Love you, too.  Bye.”  The screen blankly took the salutation from him, though he thought it was probably better received by the computer than the person it was supposed to be directed to.  He sighed heavily, rubbing the scar in his hair again.  “Well, that was nice and happy…” he tried to joke.  The dark haired man sitting at the other table was trying to be as unobtrusive as possible.  “Sorry ‘bout that.  Probably not the nicest thing to be subjected to.”

The man looked up and gave him a sympathetic smile. “I’m sorry for overhearing. If I’d realized, I would have left straight away. It just seemed like I’d draw more attention by leaving than staying put.” He cocked his head to the side, his brow furrowing slightly. “Are you alright?” he asked gently.

“Peachy-keen, cupcake,” Mark sighed, sticking out his hand.  “Mark Schaefer.  You’re..Alenko? Right?  Sorry for the circumstance of meetin’ this way.”

Alenko took his hand and shook it somewhat awkwardly. “That’s right. Kaidan Alenko. I’m not sure whether ‘it’s nice to meet you’ would be appropriate or untimely. So…hello.”

A grin spread on his face unwittingly.  This guy was alright; deadpan humor was hard to pull off and Kaidan had it.

“Hello.”

keeping with a theme.  Mark’s backstory, family, and journey are some of my favorite creations I’ve made, especially when adapted to this scenario.  This story right here was mostly my work, with some additions from the ex writing partner.  The parts with Kate and Kaidan in this were theirs, but the majority of the words down were mine.  It’s nice to see them floating around again, even if my name isn’t attached to them any longer.

If Mass Effect fanfiction was named like romance novels ...

In Bed With A Prothean

The Charlatan’s Pregnant Mistress

The Virgin Spectre

In The Biotic’s Bed

The Spectre’s Secret Bride

Turian Temptation

The Spectre’s Pregnancy Secret

The Seduced Asari

… and yes, I literally went through and changed one word of actual romance novel titles.

Ah. The post that started it all @artsyblacksheep 🤣🤣🤣

My next project is going to be “THE MEN FROM BIOQUIN” LOL

”I write because I have stories trapped in my head, begging to be let out. I write because I live in an isolated location and it allows me to reach out to people to make connections that are difficult for me in person. I write because I didn’t for almost 15 years because teenage me was told writing romances was silly and a waste of my time and I can’t believe I let people dictate to me what made me happy. And that’s it. In the end, I write because it makes me happy.”

Thank you for answering “Why do you write”! (And sorry for the time it took). Here’s your promised aesthetic board! I hope you like it.

Don’t forget to reblog this on your Tumblr. If you want, tag a writer you would like to undertake the challenge! Let’s tell the world why we write!!

Does anyone else have the problem where they’ve completed UNC: Valuable Minerals, maxed out at level 50, and still feel compelled to detour to every time you see the icon for those blasted rocks minerals?? Y/N???

In a quarterly earnings call with investors, Netflix Chief Financial Officer David Wells confirmed the inaugural Marvel Netflix Original Series will return sometime in 2018. The confirmation came with Wells listing various original content to premiere or return in the final half of the year.

“We’ve got new seasons coming up the second half of this year of Orange Is The New Black, Ozark, Iron Fist, Daredevil, Narcos, the finale of House of Cards, the followup series for Making a Murderer,” explained Wells in terms of what to expect from the premium streaming service in the second half of 2018.

The confirmation makes this year the biggest for the MCU’s offerings on Netflix to date with the second season of Jessica Jones premiering in March, the second season of Luke Cage arriving in June, and the second season of Iron Fist scheduled to premiere on September 7. With a gap of approximately three months between premieres, this would put the third season of Daredevil on track for a December release if the pattern continues.

I met a fan artist from the Hobbit fandom who’s 40+ years old, who sent me a postcard a couple of years back for Christmas with her art on the card.

When I was about 14, I once befriended, and lost contact with, a 40 year old woman with a full head of gray, curly hair, who was one of the best known Good Omens fan artists of the community. She had apparently been in and out of asylums for years, and I worried for the longest time. I even sent her an email when I was around 18, asking after her well-being. But then she resurfaced when I was 21, here on tumblr. It was one of the greatest and most memorable fandom experiences I’ve ever had.

When I was 15 and using slurs I didn’t know were slurs, 30+ year old LGBTQ+ comics fans on scans_daily patiently but firmly corrected me. I felt mortified, but they never attacked me or treated me as anything other than a dumb kid who made a mistake.

I have a long time friend of close to a decade, who was late twenties when I met her in the comics fandom, and I was a teen.

OLDER FANS ARE CRUCIAL TO THE SURVIVAL OF FANDOMS. Not ONLY because they’re literally the ones keeping fandom afloat (AO3 wasn’t created or maintained by kids, let’s just say), but because older fans generally don’t attack or bully or fuck up a fandom by being aggressive or volatile or overzealous, destroying any enjoyment of a medium.

Single women, married women, LGBTQ+ fans, all in the range of 30-60 years old. I’ve met all sorts of older fans, from when I was 12 on deviantart to now, in my mid-twenties, and not a single one of them has ever hurt me or treated me like dirt. I’ve always felt safer with older fans than with younger ones, because of the people I’ve seen harass, accuse, doxx, bully, and generally engage in harmful behaviour in this fandom, they’ve largely been in the 13-21 age bracket.

Obviously most young fans aren’t like that, but the toxicity is palpable regardless.

@younger fans, if somebody older in a fandom acts in a creepy way, then feel free to avoid them, block them, report them.

But this apparent DELUSION that younger fans have that older fans are “creepy” just for existing needs to be eradicated. Just. Stop. You do not deserve the fandoms they built, they maintained, they keep alive in themselves and all the younger fans they took care of, if you cannot RESPECT THEM.

Plus, younger fans, do you expect you will stop caring about the things you’re so passionate about as soon as you hit “a certain age?”
