As much as I want to support ethical farming practices I will be buying the cheapest bag of frozen chicken thighs as much as the next frugal/poor person which is why animal welfare needs to be legislated, not left up to the invisible hand of the free market or some bullshit. Invisible hand of the free market finds itself around a lot of throats.

the commodification of friendship is the most annoying thing to come out of the internet in ages. like actually i love to break this to you but you're supposed to help your friends move even if it's hard work. or stay up with them when they're sad even if you're gonna lose sleep. you're supposed to listen to their fears and sorrows even if it means your own mind takes on a little bit of that weight. that's how you know that you care. they will drive you to the airport and then you will make them soup when they're sick. you're supposed to make small sacrifices for them and they are supposed to do that for you. and there's actually gonna be rough patches for both of you where the balance will be uneven and you will still be friends and it will not be unhealthy and they will not be abusive. life is not meant to be an endless prioritization of our own comfort if it was we would literally never get anywhere ever. jesus.

gripping people so hard by the shoulders. stop projecting your embarrassment and disgust for your own teenage self onto people who are currently teenagers. if you're so sure that adults are so much smarter and more competent than teens then how about you act like it and stop taking your feelings out on others. also stop hating your teenage self and practice respect and compassion for who you are and used to be, but the need to at the very least stop externalizing that feeling is kinda urgent.

a lot of the embarrassing things that teenagers do are great actually. i genuinely love it when kids write the types of cringey and ridiculous stories that i wrote when i was their age. i love seeing the manga section of the bookstore get populated by a new generation of teenage nerds. i love it when they do silly tiktok dances with their friends. 

and even if i’m personally kind of inconvenienced by the noise it’s still really nice to see my subway stop get flooded with middle schoolers who are just getting out school. yes they’re yelling and throwing empty chip bags on the ground and bumping into people but they’re also kids having fun with their friends. 

they are enjoying their childhoods and that’s amazing. 

nobody should make any of these kids feel bad about being developmentally appropriate. especially not grown adults who went through the exact same things. 

maybe i'm just a grumpy english major but i feel like a lot of the "lol people think shakespeare is pretentious but actually his plays are just dick jokes and swordfighting" posting can verge into "lol what if the curtains are just blue" territory. yes shakespeare plays are full of those things AND they are also profound and complex and thematically rich. people spend their careers analyzing them for a reason, actually. it's not just dick jokes all the way down. and sometimes people spend their careers analyzing the dick jokes. stop trying to pick one side of the dichotomy between high and low culture. it's both. it can be both.

When Europeans discuss America:

As an American, it so SO FUCKING REFRESHING to hear our problems talked about like this. Hearing someone acknowledge how little fucking power the American people have in our system.

You can blame America as a whole for a LOT of things, and I'm not saying her citizens are blameless in that by any means, but we are very, VERY much victims in this equation as well.
