underhand freethrows would revolutionize the game like steph curry did with the three ball. itll never happen because the muscle memory is built from childhood and this would only really revolutionize the game for nba or high level basketball. I think its because of the purpose of the game at the different levels. in a league where winning is all that matters vs a team where winning and learning matters pure efficiency matters more to the just winning side. but idk kids are shooting from half court these days so all it might take is one person to spark an analytical revolution/ new philosophy for youth ball. obvi its not like worth more points but I imagine widespread adoption of the technique would lead to universally higher free throw rates. it is a better shot to take at the line especially for bigger guys. they get to start the balls arc lower and with more control because both arms are moving synchronously which, at least in a vacuum where the muscle memory isnt a factor or isnt much of a factor, would be a much easier motion. it is also a full body shot which means it requires less from the arms as more power than usual is built from the body (not that shot power at the line isnt built from the body beyond the arms, it is just that this shot spreads out the work more evenly) It is probably too much to ask an nba player or even a college level player to try this because atp its less about fundamentals and more about tweaks and repetitions. its too much to ask someone who has already learned how to shoot to do something different at the line. at least in case it effects the shooting muscle memory for the rest of the game. So idk would it be worth it to just say fuck it and make your kid take underhanders their whole life? Imo it, baring any rule changes, is the next step in the analytics based offensive revolution. Rick may be an asshole but he was right about the free throw shooting!!
