So, for those of you unaware: The Korean entertainment industry is an absolute nightmare. Actors have gone years never being paid for work they're owed pay on. The idol industry is terrible in all the ways. And it's honestly no surprise the industry is shit for writers as well. Glad to see the Korean writers are standing up for themselves too!

In partnership with licensed arborists, we have pruned these trees annually at this time of year to ensure that the canopies are light ahead of the high wind season,” they wrote. “We support the WGA and SAG’s right to demonstrate and are working to provide some shade coverage. We continue to openly communicate with the labor leaders on-site to work together during this time.”
If those trees were pollarded annually, the cut areas would NOT look like that. There would be big knobs of old growth at the trimming sites. Not seeing any of that here. The way those trees were topped (not pollarded, which is a very careful process that has to begin when the tree is immature) is excellent way to kill them due to loss of hydration, open sites to infection and parasitism during the best time of year for both, lack of nutrition due to so little greenery and new budding growth being left, sunburn and other exposure damage, and a myriad of other possibilities. Plus, if they were topped annually, they would not have the lovely drooping branches seen in the other picture but would have tons of vertical suckers instead.

If this was done by the city, the public works arborists should be protesting in front of city hall and screaming their heads off right now. I'm not hearing about that, so... Tree law!

He mentions later in the thread that not only do they not trim the trees annually, they’re trimmed at best once every 18 years. Supposed to be every five, and only in dormancy, which even my layman’s ass knows about tree trimming.
And yes, Universal can probably eat the fine. But it’s gonna be a whopper even if the trees survive (which is as mentioned kinda unlikely), California is a triple damage state for tree law, and it may increase dramatically if there were nesting birds in the trees.
All this to be a Captain Planet filler villain to some writers. And yes, it’s currently just the writers officially picketing there; SAG-AFTRA recommended against it for petty bullshit like this and the suddenly necessary sidewalk construction.

"Worst and best case I ever saw was a guy who was caught in the act of cutting down a C&C tree by two Department of Urban Forestry supervisors while they were randomly driving around on a Saturday. Not only did he have to deal with the cops showing up and months of paperwork and bureaucracy, but he also had to pay the fines AND cover the cost of the tree removal + stumping + buying a new tree + planting the new tree + wages for the regular crew plus the extra workers they needed to get the jobs done. That tree ended up costing him upwards of $35K, and that was over 20 years ago."

and because i'm an asshole, i decided to look into why so many autistic folks are trans/nb. it's not an inaccurate statement, at least the first half, but terfs lie through their teeth so i decided to get to the scientific root of it.
the answer blew my fucking mind.
the study on gender and autism i found said two very specific things about autistic people: we are more mentally resistant to things like social conditioning and binarism. we like our secret third things, y'know.
an excerpt:
“The finding that non-binary identities are most elevated seems to support hypotheses focussed on autistic resistance to social conditioning, which are consistent with existing evidence of the same effect with respect to self-description of sexual orientation. Perhaps elevated rates of trans identity in autism might result from a rejection of the binary cisgenderist norm, which combined with a below-typical concern for social norms could promote the disclosure of the identity.”
94% of autistics surveyed for that paper identified themselves as non-binary.
other studies have found autistic people have higher levels of critical thinking, and require more evidence to maintain or convert to a belief system (hence why many of us eventually fall away from religion) than allistic people.
which means, at least from my perspective, that:
a) the 'brainwashing' terfs are accusing the trans community of inflicting on autistic folks would likely not even work if they tried.
b) the current binary definition of gender flies directly against embedded autistic modes of thinking to begin with.
you cannot brainwash someone into thinking something they already believe.
This essentially suggests that autistic people are likely to be NB because we are in fact resistant to the relevant brainwashing.
As an autistic person with a weird gender this lines up with my personal observation, which is that autistic people are not really prone to follow social norms that don't make sense to them or provide them with any benefits just because.
There is an immense amount of cis allistic anxiety about this, because they like to think adhering to the gender binary is in the same natural-law category as "don't kill someone for pissing you off" or whatever, and it completely isn't, and our collective refusal to play ball makes something in them angry.
The typical allistic reaction to autists behaving unusually is to insist on controlling them, or treat their social "failures" as deficits of parental, workplace, partner, state, societal control. The idea that autistic people are "brainwashed" into being trans and nonbinary is in fact projection by people who want to brainwash autistic people to follow their stupid fucking rules, and are existentially terrified that they can't seem to get it to work

No, the point of reading isn't exclusively to decipher the meaning an author is conveying to you, there are many many critical lenses for interpreting a text, some don't give all that much of a shit what the author meant.
Yes, a story isn't necessarily approving of an evil action by depicting it, but it's also not necessarily "showing" that it's evil either. Those aren't the options. Stories don't just exist to teach moral lessons.
To understand and enjoy SO MANY stories, you must disconnect yourself from the framework that a story is always, in some way, teaching you how to behave morally or what "right" behavior is, and particularly that a "likable" character is a morally correct one that you're supposed to empathize with.
Sometimes, a character is supposed to be reprehensible and YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO EMPATHIZE WITH THEM.
But even more importantly, sometimes a story simply is not necessarily designating a character's actions as "right" or "wrong." That just isn't what is being communicated.
Sometimes a story is asking "What if this happened? Wouldn't that be fucked up?" And this is in no way less "deep" or meaningful or worthy of analysis.

Yes, Disney is a brand but I don’t care about Bob Iger. I care about Peter Sohn, the director of Elemental. I care about Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, the directors of Wish. I care about the animators, the background designers, the editors, the people who MAKE the movies. They’re the ones creating new stories and characters for us to fall in love with.
When people talk about films, they don’t talk about the producers, they talk about the directors, writers and actors. Creatives are the people who make the movies memorable. They deserve to be paid. It’s ridiculous that the people who make these shows and movies worth something are getting screwed out of money.

The fact that SAG-AFTRA has concessions in the strike for actors to attend cons for meet-ups/photos.
The rule is that they'd like to keep actors off panels to discuss particular projects because that's promoting stopped work.
But a LOT of actors, especially older actors, characters actors, and voice actors rely on the ability to do photo ops and meet-and-greets with fans for a good chunk of income.
So, good job on that, SAG-AFTRA. That's thinking of the 98% of the union who aren't multi-millionaires.
Mangroves are so fucking important
One of the problems with this depiction is that in reality it's never the same guy in picture one and two. The people making the money on deforestation, and other kinds of environmental destruction such as removal of mangroves are not the ones having to pay the immediate consequences. They just move on to the next project, the next area and keep doing the same thing.
