Fuck Around and Find Out

We have regular doors on either side of revolving doors because 492 people died at the Cocoanut Grove in 1942. We have radar for air traffic control and the Federal Aviation Administration because two planes collided over the Grand Canyon in 1956. Natural gas smells like that because it didn’t before it blew up the New London school in 1937 and killed around 300 people. We have a LOT of fire safety rules because of the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire. We have stronger cockpit doors because of 9/11 and stronger security for employees because of Pacific Southwest Flight 1771 and lighted aisles on planes because of Air Canada Flight 797.

I mean, that’s just off the top of my head after getting home from working twelve hours overnight. Two hundred and twelve episodes of @disasterarea-podcast, and nearly all of them involved the disaster in question spawning new regulations or rules to prevent the same thing from happening again.

actually i’d like to point out: we have safety regulations because people PROTESTED AND FOUGHT AND STRUCK AND DEMONSTRATED AND RAISED HELL. it took the bereaved families of those who died in the triangle shirtwaist factory years of campaigning for the government to pass regulations about fire and door locks. it took open warfare--the government was sending in troops, dropping bombs-- for miners in appalachia to get basic safety regulations. it takes parent groups and boycots and unions fighting cops in the street. it takes marches on washington. it takes a lot of journalism.

the government does nothing for the silent dead, the humble dead, the polite dead. a dead body is shoveled into the ground and forgotten by the next business quarter.

safety regulations are not written in the blood of silent, disposable victims. they’re written in the blood of those who split their knuckles and screamed their throats raw for a better world.

don’t ever underestimate the value of protest.

Better than recyclable: if the right systems are in place, a glass bottle can be sterilised and REUSED, which uses less resources than recycling.

We seem to have forgotten the old sustainability slogan I was taught as a kid in the 90s, which is ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’. And that’s the preferential order. We should be reducing first, then reusing what we can, and recycling should be a distant third option.

But capitalism can only make money from the ‘recycling’ part.

The boomers are right about a lot of things. Even if sometimes they blame it on the wrong people.

Planned obsolescence is making everything terrible. Tipping is out of control, pay your damn workers a fair wage (still tip though, since that's the system right now and they need that tip to live). Not everything needs to have an app, account, and subscription. Physical media is important. Social media is poisoning people's minds (boomers included). America is dying (capitalism and nationalism being the main causes). Not everything needs to work off smart technology that's a pain in the ass to use. And for fucks sake, give us buttons to push, I don't know where the damn remote is.

And yes, fries come with the burger. Unless you're ordering a la carte. A meal consists of more than just one item. Having sides prominently displayed that don't come with it is just deceptive. That just leaves the workers to warn every damn customer beforehand before they (rightfully) complain. Also, sauce packs should be free.

@is-the-snake-video-cute looks like a coral snake (blunt nose) but double checking- is it ?

That's indeed a coral snake, good ID!!

This thread is full of the luckiest people on the planet, I think. Also goes to show just how calm even venomous snakes are - coral snakes rarely bite unless you're actively harassing them - and how important it is to make sure your ID as non-venomous is 1000% certain before picking up any wild snake.

quick roundup of ds9 lizards, and a quick anim im currently away from my usual tools so this is also a krita animation test as ive never used it for this purpose,,,, (sorry for not adding quark snatching the bottle, if i were to add more frames or camera movement grandmas computer wouldve gone critical and melt into an elephant foot) also made me think that it would be cool to see a star trek reanimated scene collab or something ,,,,

+more stuff, i really havent been drawing much, im looking for bugs in tall grass most of the time now
