Memory Tips

  • Study repeatedly - Overlearn. Take advantage of life’s little intervals (i.e.- riding the bus, walking, waiting in the grocery checkout line)
  • Spend time actively thinking about material - Exercise weak memories with rehersal and critical reflection. No skimming!
  • Make material personally meaningful - Write notes in your own words. Form as many cue associations (i.e.- images, experiences) as possible!
  • Use mnemonic devices for lists - Associate items with peg words, create a vivid story involving the items, or chunk items into acronyms
  • Refresh your memory by activating cues - Mentally re-create situations/moods where you orginally learned the material or physically return to the location
  • Minimize interferences - Study about an hour before sleep. Don’t study similar subjects back-to-back (i.e.- Studying Spanish then French right after)
  • Test your knowledge - Don’t be overconfident about recalling the material. Test yourself with the learning objectives. You can outline sections, define terms/concepts, create practice tests, or explain the topic to a friend without using your notes

hi lovelies!

i’ve been getting a lot of messages about my bullet journal and how i make it so today i’m here to explain the whole process! first of all i was inspired by @jellybujo and @effyxlabujo - make sure to check them out! lets get started! here is an overview of my bullet journal so far:

1. what materials do you use?

i use my ipad mini and a stylus for my bullet journal but you don’t necessarily need a stylus! it makes it easier but it isn’t necessary!

2. what apps/websites do you use?

for my actualy bullet journal i use the app goodnotes 4, it’s on the app store for $7.99, it is quite pricey for an app but it does a really good job. i have tried others like notability ($8.99), penultimate (free) and pages ($9.99) and i prefer goodnotes much more!

unfortunately, goodnotes doesn’t have the option to make tables or draw shapes so i use the pages app to make things like my timetable and habit tracker, as well as making the boxes i use to write my tasks on my weekly spreads.

the website i use to make my collages (front cover, titles, weekly spreads) is called polyvore and basically it has a bunch of different images you can choose from (as well as import your own), different effects, coloured boxes, text, overlays, etc.

3. how do you make your bullet journal?

  • front cover/monthly pages

for my front cover i used polyvore and i basically just added a magazine article and some other black and white images and then over it i placed a picture of myself as well as some glitter and confetti overlays.

  • legend/timetable/habit tracker

for the titles, i used polyvore again and followed the same process as above – black and white images, coloured block, title, overlays. other than that i just make tables for my habits and schedule and write my legend using emojis and coloured circles!

  • weekly spreads

finally, my weekly spreads are basically just a bunch of random images and doodles that i put together in colour schemes for it to look pretty! just be creative and create whatever you want! after that i add 6 boxes (i divide my week in all the weekdays and then the weekend) and that’s where i write my tasks!

  • monthly spreads

i got these printable pages from www.lilamiller.me!

4. anymore questions? be sure to send me a message!

i’m always available to help anyone with questions about my bullet journal! thank you guys for reading and i hope this helps you to make your own!

love, maria x

reblog to save a soul and their wallets // Now everyone can get mildliners, muji pens, stabilo pens, a kanken backpack for free

i know. you think i’m crazy, or you think this is clickbait. can Tumblr posts even be clickbait? BUT this is 100% legitimate and i have personally used these ways to get free items like school materials. So let’s get into it.Since the school season has started, i thought: why not share how i get essentially free money to buy stuff online. From songs, digital apps, and more but what i’m going to focus on is school materials.

Disclaimer: these are not going to be instant, it takes a good few weeks in order to get enough money to buy things. But i do think that the wait is no bad and you do get money for free, sooo…

FREE MONEY: APP EDITION

yes you can make money from apps, my favorite include SLIDEJOY (for android), FRESCO,  FEATUREPOINTS, and EBATES

1. SLIDEJOY:    [ download ]

(ANDROID, sorry apple users) one of my favorite ways to make money as a lazy student that wants to buy midliners and muji pens. The app is a lock screen for your android device, it displays ads on your lock screen and that’s it. In a few weeks you should have made a few bucks to buy those midliners you wanted without having to do anything. this is what i call EZ MONEY. the reason why i chose Slidejoy is that it isn’t “ugly,” it is much prettier than some of the other ad lock screen apps. And the payout is much better than those. Right now i have garnered around $20, so that’s like a 12 pack of muji pens, and 5 mildliners.

2. FRESCO:  [download]  *most money*

(AMERICA ONLY, but soon it’s going to be worldwide) One of the easiest ways to get more money. this is a news app, and it pays you for images and videos: so we, consumers, are their sources. If there is a police chase, a protest, a fire, a hurricane or a major event nearby you, you take a picture (if your picture gets accepted) you get $20, a video is even better $50. So if you are nearby anything major, just pull out your camera and take a picture or video to make money. They also have assignment for you, so if want to travel to someplace close to you, you can make easy and quick bucks to buys those stationery products.

 3.  Featur3 Points:   [download]  R0EPKA

4. EBATES:        [download]

you spend money at stores, you get cash back. This is more obsolete, since you have to spend money but if you do buy anything, what’s the harm in getting cash back. So hypothetically you are already planning to go on vacation, Expedia is giving 10% cash back, and marriott hotels is giving 6% cash back, that’s like over $100 back into your pocket when you are already destined to go there. So if you are a avid shopper, this is for you. I don’t use it that often but eBay usually gives up to 5% cash back, it’s there, soooo i just use it if i get something there. And the extra money i get back allows me to buy other stuff. This app is a no brainer, if you are already buying things, then why not just get money back?

5. IN TOTAL:

i could probably make more than $100 for all of these apps, and all of that goes into my savings to get school supplies within a few weeks. Good Luck guys, i know a lot of you guys want those supplies, and now i think everyone can get them.

Now everyone in the studyblr community can get those mildliners and those kanken backpacks we’ve been dreaming of. Happy free money.

Felt kinda off today but I didn’t want that to get in the way of getting stuff done! I started my chem and theory homework, scheduled an appointment, practiced, and worked out at the gym. :)

Study tips for lazy people, let's be real

I’m not saying you’re lazy but you’re human and you wear out quickly.

1. Take good notes the first time around. I see some people say rewriting them is a good way to memorize but let’s be honest, you’re not going to do that. Instead bite the bullet and do what you can the first time so you can read them later. It’s also just more time efficient. And don’t ask other people for notes, they’re not you and notes need to be personal to be effective. So don’t skip class too much.

2. You don’t need 100 different highlighters to be successful (but you can if you want). The key is keeping it succinct. Write down what your teacher says and find it later in the book. Read those passages a couple of times in your head and out loud to yourself to commit the info to memory. Honestly just highlight the key words so that when you see it on the test, the info connected to it floods back.

3. Use your phone to organize your shit. You always have it with you. God knows you ain’t gonna buy multi colored sticky notes and a $30 planner. And you might forget your textbooks and planner but not your phone.

4. Make a reasonable to do list you KNOW deep in your soul you can commit to. It’s a better motivator to see stuff get done than to see stuff not get done.

5. Try to get stuff done before noon. That’s my best advice. Early rise and early done makes you feel accomplished even if all you’ve done is read a few pages. This is probably the best time management advice I ever received in my life.

6. Don’t cram but if you have to get up and walk around to keep yourself energized.

7. Try to find a way to keep calm. You’re most likely not the type to plan every aspect down to the molecule or the type to be on top of everything. Things go awry, that’s just life. Find a way to fix your perspective on setbacks and failures so that it doesn’t ruin your future vision. This is personal so I can’t help you too much there.

GREAT TIPS especially the first one.

At age 23, Tina Fey was working at a YMCA. At age 23, Oprah was fired from her first reporting job.  At age 24, Stephen King was working as a janitor and living in a trailer.

At age 27, Vincent Van Gogh failed as a missionary and decided to go to art school.   At age 28, J.K. Rowling was a suicidal single parent living on welfare.

At age 28, Wayne Coyne ( from The Flaming Lips) was a fry cook. At age 30, Harrison Ford was a carpenter.  At age 30, Martha Stewart was a stockbroker.  At age 37, Ang Lee was a stay-at-home-dad working odd jobs. Julia Child released her first cookbook at age 39, and got her own cooking show at age 51. Vera Wang failed to make the Olympic figure skating team, didn’t get the Editor-in-Chief position at Vogue, and designed her first dress at age 40. Stan Lee didn’t release his first big comic book until he was 40. Alan Rickman gave up his graphic design career to pursue acting at age 42. Samuel L. Jackson didn’t get his first movie role until he was 46.

Morgan Freeman landed his first movie role at age 52. Kathryn Bigelow only reached international success when she made The Hurt Locker at age 57. Grandma Moses didn’t begin her painting career until age 76. Louise Bourgeois didn’t become a famous artist until she was 78. Whatever your dream is, it is not too late to achieve it. You aren’t a failure because you haven’t found fame and fortune by the age of 21. Hell, it’s okay if you don’t even know what your dream is yet. Even if you’re flipping burgers, waiting tables or answering phones today, you never know where you’ll end up tomorrow. Never tell yourself you’re too old to make it.

Never tell yourself you missed your chance.

Never tell yourself that you aren’t good enough.

You can do it. Whatever it is.

So my coworker and I had an interesting discussion today.  We were talking about the trends that were around when we were teenagers. She, in her early 30s, remembers wearing teen trends from the 90s - chokers, crimped hair, and quirky jeans. I was a full-fledged “emo kid” in my teen years, complete with bad, home-dyed hair, fingerless gloves and ripped skinny jeans. And since the two of us work with teenagers, we were trying to put our finger on what would become the defining style of this new generation. And then it came to us: it’s perfection.  When I was a teenager, pressure to look and dress a certain way came from celebrities and rock stars. And on some level, I understood that those people were downright mythical, living in a far-off world of money and stylists and glamour while all my friends and I tromped around with ill-fitting jeans and clumsy, sharpied-on eyeliner. Yeah, I looked like an idiot when I was 13, but so did everyone else I knew - none of us knew how to put on makeup, or do our hair, or pick out flattering clothes. We were imitating people we knew we had no hope of resembling, and just sort of making it up as we go along.

Now, that’s no longer the case.

Teenagers today don’t face pressure from celebrities; they face it from EVERYBODY. You cant go on Instagram or Snapchat or Facebook or YouTube without being bombarded by images of seemingly ordinary teenagers and young people with perfect makeup, perfect hair, perfect bodies, and perfect lives. Being a teenager today means having an expertly-contoured face, professionally dyed and toned ombre hair, precisely applied eye makeup and lipstick, a bottomless wardrobe of trendy clothes and a strict diet of avocados and superfood smoothies, because holy shit everybody but me is posting pictures of their trendy, amazing lives at every minute of every day.  This could be a whole lot of “back in my day”-style griping, but I was a teenager when YouTube was just getting it’s start, Nexopia (Canadian MySpace) was in its glory, and Instagram was still an idea in somebody’s notebook. I had pimples and frizzy hair and no sense of style and I had orthodontic appliances that looked like mad science experiments. But so did everyone else. If I’d had to feast my eyes on a constant torrent of flawless 14-year-olds on the internet every day, I think I would have had a breakdown.  So the point of all this is, just remember one thing: All that perfection you see online is fake.

I have a friend who spends hours arranging the covers of books she’s reading on top of barn wood, surrounded by dried leaves and an artful latte, just for appearances. My brother has thousands of followers on Instagram; he’s failing out of college, his girlfriend is controlling his life, he’s constantly miserable, but on Instagram, everything’s fine. It’s all smiles and green smoothies and man bun for the camera. And we all do it. We all put our best foot forward. We hide the doubts and insecurities.  But it’s okay to have them. It’s okay to be awkward. It’s okay to have blemishes. It’s okay if your eyebrows aren’t on fleek and your belly rolls over your jeans. It’s okay to not know what highligher is, or how to ombre your hair. It’s okay to be too frizzy, too spotty, too chubby, too hairy, too dark or too pale. We’re all too much of this and too much of that, and we know it.  No one’s as perfect as they seem. Just be you.

How Do You Know When It’s Time to End a Relationship?

See, the problem I have with breakups is that they usually don’t go the way you expect them to - there’s no big fight, no slammed doors, no big affair. In most cases, the spark just sort of quietly dies, and then you both force yourselves to be around each other until you can’t stand the sound of the other person breathing for another second.  To date, that’s how all three of my past relationships ended. Don’t be like Miss Mentelle. Miss Mentelle is bad at this. But I’m learning.  So if you’re struggling with whether to stay in your relationship, ask yourself: Am I staying in this relationship to prove a point to myself or someone else?

Am I staying because I’m afraid of “losing” or “wasting” the time I’ve already invested in this relationship?

Does being around my partner stress me out more than it uplifts me?

Am I staying with my partner for reasons other than how they make me feel (ex. their job, fear of losing apartment, hassle of dividing possessions?)

Do I feel like I have to walk on eggshells around my partner?

Do I constantly fantasize about being with someone else, or being single again?

Do I feel like I’m missing out on life by being with this person?

Am I having a hard time picturing a future with this person?

Do this person and I fundamentally disagree on values that are super important to me (having children, lifestyle, etc?)

Do I distrust my partner?

Are our issues being caused by a permanent clash in personality, rather than temporary stresses?

Am I struggling with a “dealbreaker” piece of information my partner sprang on me halfway through the relationship (ie a secret high-risk lifestyle, large debts, desire for a third partner)?

Do we argue a lot more than I’m comfortable with?

Does my partner make me feel unwanted, guilty, undesirable or ignored?

Do we struggle to find things to talk about?

Will staying with my partner mean giving up major goals or other things that are important to me?

Is my relationship boring?

Have we stopped including each other in our plans?

Do I feel lonely in this relationship?

Am I making a lot more effort than my partner to keep this relationship going?

Is my life worse because I’m in this relationship?

Obviously, all relationships and circumstances are different, but if you’ve answered “yes” to a few of those questions, it might be time to reflect on whether or not this relationship is worth hanging on to. Remember, breaking things off doesn’t mean that your partner is “bad” or that they did something wrong - they’re just not the right person for you.

And if all else fails, there’s always my friend R’s advice - if you have to ask, you probably already know the answer.
