Gauchos, from primarily Argentina where they’re a large national symbol close to the level of cowboys in the US. Also gauchos are in Uruguay.  Their pants are called bombachas and the other garment wrapped around them are called chiripas.  They work in grasslands called pampas, known for being really fertile:

While they’re not as dressed up as the others or have as prominent of a culture, for a broader Latin American cowboy context, I feel like also adding llaneros, who are from Colombia and Venezuela, in the llanos region, a type of tropical grassland similar to the pampas, hence the name llanero. Pampas get annual flooding and these guys would go barefoot a lot, and you can see that the stirrup on the horse’s saddle is really different than what you’re probably used to seeing, to accommodate for that, which is what I want to point out as an aspect of plains cultures developing clothing/accessories/tools to suit the environment. 

Cowboy culture happened wherever Spanish colonial influence and grassland biomes came together.  They differ based on the grasslands having different climates (ex tropical in South America), and the local indigenous influence (ex, backtracking to gauchos, they would use this tool called bolas to catch animals, which were basically two balls tied to a string that you threw and it spun around an animals legs, and were an indigenous invention):

i like never do this & im sorry to hijack yr post (especially seeing as you are a person i do not know!!) but another thing im seeing on these playlists is an absolutely abysmal amount of black artists. spider-punk is and has always been a black character, and black people are frequently pushed out of alternative and subcultural spaces, so i'm going to offer some black punk artists i personally enjoy for i guess playlist consideration aimed towards some of the ppl in the notes, although this isn't definitive & hobie's taste will of course not necessarily be my own.

also to note before we get into this is that punk is a culture of resistance. hobie in specific (though i don't know how much of this will be part of his characterization in the spiderverse trilogy going forward---he's pretty different in atsv, which isn't a bad thing) has been depicted in the comics as a homeless teenager living under a fascist government. regardless of whether or not that depiction is accurate for this version of hobie is irrelevant for now; the point i'm making is that his attachment to punk is not purely aesthetic in nature. i think keeping the radical aspects of punk in general and of spider-punk in specific in mind are important when discussing the character.

anyway.

Dark Horse Comics Lady Killer mini series (compiled into a perfect bound graphic novel edition) is written by Jamie S. Rich and Joelle Jones, and masterfully drawn by Ms. Jones herself. 

The gritty (and bloody!) story deals with a Mad Men era suburban Seattle housewife who’s actually a CIA assassin. 

Artist Joelle Jones explains how she playfully put together a series of vintage ad mockups while doing research for the project, shown above (with additional hand lettering by Crank). The mini-series is a dark delight, just as these playfully grim ads are. This isn’t a comics blog, of course. And Rich and Jones’ mini series won’t be for everyone. But the art is still terrific, and those ads are fun. The illustration style and typography is strictly now, but the coloring and general ‘feel’ are pure retro. And we’ll admit it: We love retro, and get a real kick out of seeing contemporary tweaks and twists of vintage 20th century design, illustration and photographic tropes. To all the people commenting that she’s an accessory to “illegal immigration,” note that seeking asylum is a human right. Countries which refuse asylum are in violation of the Geneva Convention. They get away with this and propagandize complacency towards the victims by using bureaucracy to complicate immigration proceedings. During times of genocide, this is tantamount to hearing a would-be murder victim knocking on your door and locking the deadbolt.

People who risk dying getting smuggled across borders do so out of sheer desperation because the situation they’re leaving is worse. Finally, you are missing the entire point: violation of the law is warranted when the laws violate human rights and criminalize existence. Laws which call immigrants “illegal” are tools of a systemic negligence designed to condemn those who need legal protection the most.

TERFS who think they’re welcome on my posts: you’re not. the freedom to reject conventional beauty standards should apply to and be shared with trans women as well, moreso, in fact, because trans women are literally held to an even harsher, stricter standard when it comes to rando third parties feeling entitled to meticulous over-performance from them - demanding they put every last possible ounce of resource and effort into altering their appearance just to be seen as acceptable, demanding they “prove” their validity through excessive glamour, to ensure they are not “faking” - and the consequences for a trans woman if she does not flawlessly comply with these demands can be so dire as to be lethal for her.

That should not be the reality these women have to endure! That is a horrifying injustice, and anybody who not only lacks compassion for that, but promotes the ideologies that enable it, is not welcome here. I will not debate with you on the matter. Get lost.

dear non-spanish speakers writing spiderverse fanfiction (or anything with spanglish),

in spanglish you don’t switch by word, you switch by phrase.

it’s not:

“[first part of the sentence in english], [second part of the sentence in english], mi amor.”

“[full english sentence], querida.”

it’s:

“[first part of the sentence in english], [segunda parte de la frase en español], mi amor.”

also miles is boricua, miguel is mexican. they have two different accents and use different vocabulary for certain words.

also miles is “nyourican” - a puerto rican native to new york - while his mom is directly from the island, so there are differences there, too, because his spanish is more influence by new york english.

in spanish most words are gendered, so most feminine words end in a and masculine/gender neutral words end in o. adding ito/ita makes something cuter, smaller and more affectionate.

and like most languages that are not english, spanish has multiple ways of saying i love you.
