Strange Sequitur

D'aww, lookit! Twitter and a blog had a BABY!

Görkem Şen is a Turkish musician who wanted to create the sounds of electronic music acoustically. His invention, the yaybahar, is a string instrument connected to drums via metal coils that creates a wide variety of otherworldly music.

Ooh, spooky, I like it! It sounds kind of like if a whale was a robot.

Why not embed the video though? This guy's got a teeny tiny little channel and this video has fewer than 4k views, and if this post blew up it would be pretty unfair to him, getting lots of watchtime on his work but without the cruel youtube algorithm gods knowing about it so they can recommend it to more people.

Tumblr is really weird when it comes to video. I've found that when they are embedded from an external source, having the giant Youtube logo over the thumbnail and then having to click through to watch means that significantly fewer people actually bother to look at it. Generally I embed them myself and then make sure to cite the source. Unfortunately tumblr doesn't always carry over source links in reblogs and I try to link somewhere physically in the description as well to offset that but sometimes I forget. Apologies, I want everyone to look at Mr Şen's channel!

Oh, wow.

Another artist in that vein was Constance Demby; she created an instrument known as the "Space Bass". Sadly, she's no longer with us. She does have some albums that are worth checking out (I'd recommend "Sacred Space Music" and "Set Free" for openers, along with "Novus Magnificat" and "Sunborne".

Guys, GUYS it's HAPPENED!

I've found a use for a box that I saved three years ago because it was a Good Box.

I know, I know, gatekeeping the outdoors, that's supposedly bad, right, but I think if you show up to do a hike and you brought a portable speaker with you to play music while you hike, I think, like hear me out, there should be a gate, and someone at the gate should keep you from doing the hike.

playing music in public should get strong social disapproval

Recorded music, anyway. Live music is different rules. If you want to lug an entire cello up a mountain you can do whatever the hell you want.

Carrying a speaker on a hike to make everyone listen to your bullshit, and simply sitting under a tree and playing a fiddle in the woods, are two activities so different they may as well not exist in the same world.

I think the critical difference is that the bringing of recorded music with you ties the space to Elsewhere, whereas the creation of live music with an instrument you brought both binds you to the space, and drags everyone who hears you play into it as well.

I think you're right.

Yeah I'll accept this into my belief system.

Americans will measure in anything except the metric system

So apparently this is just this guy's thing

Average american unwilling to measure using metric system factoid actually a statistical error. Measurements Georg who refuses to use metric system on 10,000 posts a month is an outlier and should not have been counted.

Now that Pat Robertson's dead do you think his company will finally accept a buyout of their contractually obligated timeslot on Freeform (née ABC Family) or are they still absolutely committed to it

For anyone who doesn't know the history (or isn't American and doesn't know what this means)

In the 70s Christian Broadcasting Network founded a family TV channel they later sold. When they sold it they included a clause saying the new owners have to give them a timeslot for The 700 Club, and let them take over the network a couple times a year for a full day of fundraising.

During this time their family channel passed through the ownership of Fox and ABC, and during its time as ABC Family it gravitated towards teen dramas. Its brand now is actually not just teen dramas, but often queer, diverse teen dramas. Meanwhile they've been forced to platform a show where the host calls 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina God's punishment for homosexuality (there's also rumors that they forced the network to keep "Family" in the name long after it became a teen network)

By all accounts they've been offered copious amounts of Disney Money and have turned it down every time. The contract is so ironclad Disney lawyers can't find a way to get out of it. Their contract also mandates they can't bury it late at night either, so The 700 Club airs at 10/9 in the morning and 11/10 at night (the latter prevents Freeform from launching any kind of late night block), with disclaimers in front of it. Incredibly snarky disclaimers

Meanwhile their post-700 Club disclaimer looks like this

Pat Robertson's show is holding a network hostage due to a contract from three decades and two owners ago, and the network openly despises them. Literally nothing else like it

Like as an example of the type of Extremely Un-700 Clubian programming Freeform put on around it, at one point Pat Robertson's lead-in was The Fosters, a show about a interracial lesbian couple raising five children, with trans and gay recurring characters, and yes, apparently they did do it deliberately so anyone tuning in early to watch The 700 Club would catch a few minutes of the inclusive lesbian mom show

You (a male) was made uncomfortable by women defining women as female? The misogyny is staggering.

Avatar

Oh, bless your transphobic heart. I'm not made uncomfortable by anyone defining anyone as anything. I'm saddened by anyone adding to the pain and grief and suffering of this world, and I feel that transphobic definitions of gender, forcing people born female to identify as female, forcing people born male to identify as male, forcing intersex people to identify as whatever their families or doctors decide to impose on them, just adds heartbreak to an already difficult world.

Avatar

imagine saddening Neil fucking Gaiman. if that transphobe had any magical qualities before they sure don't now, that's like killing the big deer from princess mononoke. get de-sanctified idiot.

We’re not making out of the cyberpunk dystopia huh

You guys really need to understand that this is not a fucking dog

This is such a good example of why we need to be very self aware about our fiction.

Sentient robots that deserve rights and love are fictional. We made them up in stories.

Now, it's my favorite kind of fiction. I love it. But it's not real. It's a metaphor for oppressed human beings.

Sentient AI doesn't exist. There are corporations, and maybe even someday governments, who will want to convince you that it does, now and in the future.

Replikas don't care about you and that robot dog is a military weapon.

This is ironic 'cause military and police robot "dogs" (and the other robots they build) are built to do harm to oppressed people.

Yeah, the very people that are represented metaphorically in fiction by robots and androids.

Fiction is fun, and I love fictional robots with my whole heart. But I am not about to let it make me stupid about real life. :)

These things are not your friends. They are machines that will be used to hurt you and to hurt others. Do not fall for the propaganda that these things are just fun little friends! The above articles are the reality. Sorry.

Friendly reminder that the leather flag predates almost every other flag. We owe this community to leather daddies and kinksters

In the era of corporate sanitization never forget it was leather daddies and S&M folks who protected some of the earliest pride parades.

The leather flag is the 2nd oldest Pride flag.
