homestuck sucks, find something better to love and give your time+attention to. here are some suggestions I’ve been deeply enjoying lately

  • fire emblem (three houses, but I would also high rec sacred stones and blazing sword), the series that, as brian david gilbert says, asks “what if chess made you horny?” 
  • the expanse, a sci fi novel series about a mysterious space organism that starts wreaking havoc the exact moment someone tries to use it in a military capacity
  • tales of berseria, a very anime game about the value of your own life, the importance of determining your own future, and the need to sometimes live selfishly (also extreme levels of found family if you need even more of a sell)
  • ffxiv has become my favorite game in the franchise with its most recent entry, shadowbringers, which is about legacies, the end of the world, the way people can help or hurt one another in an apocalypse, histories forgotten by time, and the tragedies of memory. it’s EXTREMELY good. please give it a shot. ffxiv is getting a massive story overhaul in july to make the 2.0-2.55 content shorter, so you get to the really good stuff (hw and forward) faster.
  • ff7r has become my SECOND favorite game in the franchise because it does so much interesting shit with what it knows you remember of the original and in addition it is genuinely enjoyable to play. I don’t even agree with all the criticism about how much it pads things out (aside from maybe the second reactor, which was a bit unnecessarily long). 

try those instead of giving money to a shitty comic that wants you to stop reading it.

#my wife is on the SOR for being gay #no joke #she hit on a girl in a straight bar once #in 1997 #and while the girl was into it #the off duty cop sitting nearby was not #and so he arrested her for ‘soliciting homosexual activity’ #which in our state was still a felony #in 1997 (and would remain so until Lawrence v Texas in 2003) #and since ‘soliciting homosexual activity’ was a felony and a sex crime #she got put on The List #she is still on there to this day #because it costs MONEY to ask a judge to take you off #and she has tried four times#since 2003 #to get taken off the SOR #but every time the judge has said something like ‘no you pled guilty to the crime i can’t possibly take you off the sex offender registry’ #with no acknowledgement of what the actual crime was #(the crime of being a butch lesbian hitting on a cute girl who was into it) #(in 1997)

Younger queer people need to realize that the SOR being used against queer people simply for being queer isn’t some ancient history thing. It still impacts queer people today. And it can quite easily be used that way again.

When you hear people throwing around the talking point of “well there’s a high rate of sex offenders in the trans/queer community”, this has to do with why.

Being on the sex offender registry isn’t inherently equivalent to whatever horrific sex crime you’re meant to think of when it’s mentioned. It evokes imagery of pedophilia and rape, but there is a lot that can get you put on it and not a lot you can do to be taken off of it.

Public crossdressing used to be able to get you put on the sex offender registry (and by used to I mean as recently as 2011).

Public urination (you know, the literal only option for someone who’s homeless and doesn’t have access to public bathrooms, a venn diagram where trans people are more likely to rest in the meeting zone) can get you put on the sex offender registry.

Sex work is pretty much an automatic way to end up on the sex offender registry if you’re caught. (This is especially weaponized against black trans women who do sex work)

“Deviant Sexual Intercourse” (aka literally any sexual activity aside from penis-in-vagina penetration) could get you on the sex offender registry as recently as the early 2000s. That effectively impacts the entire queer community in one way or another.

The sex offender registry is, first and foremost, useless. It tells you nothing about what someone did. It’s mentioned to quickly associate a person or a group of people with the worst possible crimes imaginable.

It has been used against us time after time and it will continue to be used for that.

Not to sound like a fuckin hippie but please for the love of god start noticing and appreciating the natural world around you. You don’t have to go hike the entire Appalachian trail or anything and I get that not everyone has access to the outdoors for various reasons, but just fucking … look around you when you’re outside. Notice the sky and the sun and the birds and creatures. Start caring about them. I’m begging you.

Pride was originally a riot. It's not supposed to be "family-friendly". Those who want family-friendly LGBT spaces are free to just create them. Take places that are already family-friendly and make them LGBT-friendly also. If you don't want to do that, then that's why Pride is still necessary.

funniest thing about the “reddit migration” is that I haven’t seen a single post shitting on anyone coming from Reddit. when twitter started bleeding users everyone was firing rent-lowering posts but with redditors skittering about we’ve left the doors open and put out food bowls

I love it when a character has a reputation for being a certain way and then you actually take the time to look at them, really look at them, and it turns out not only is everyone wrong about them, they're wrong about them in exactly the way that the character wants them to be wrong about them. Like congratulations! It was an act and you fell for it!

I’m sorry friends, but “just google it” is no longer viable advice. What are we even telling people to do anymore, go try to google useful info and the first three pages are just ads for products that might be the exact opposite of what the person is trying to find but The Algorithm thinks the words are related enough? And if it’s not ads it’s just sponsored websites filled with listicles, just pages and pages of “TOP FIFTEEN [thing you googled] IMAGINED AS DISNEY PRINCESSES” like… what are we even doing anymore, google? I can no longer use you as shorthand for people doing real and actual helpful research on their own.

This is not to even mention that nowadays when you google something half the pages will be ai-generated and will have oftentimes nonsensical and contradictory information in them.

In researching getting a pet corn snake I’ve had this type of site tell me they’re diurnal, noctural AND crepuscular all on the SAME page.

We need to teach media literacy and not just tell people to try to navigate this shit themselves.
