someone else out there can probably explain it better than me but south park absolutely rotted people’s brains. maybe some of you are too young to remember, but 10-15 years ago people were honestly so vile because of that show.

south park made it funny to be antisemitic, racist, sexist, transphobic, homophobic, ableist etc. it introduced forms of bigotry to a lot of kids who otherwise wouldn’t have considered it otherwise.

this is one of the most brain-rottingly terminally online posts i’ve ever seen in my life to the point where when i saw someone screenshot this and post it on twitter talking about how terminally online this is i genuinely felt compelled to look it up and add my annoying and autistic commentary to it, my literal lifelong special interest, and then log off. i was surprised to see this person is 24 and not like, 18 but honestly even the gap between someone in their mid twenties and someone like me in their late twenties feels massive these days due to the rise of the internet and the speed with which social media has grown.

matt stone and trey parker and the greater south park team have been dealing with absolute puritans like you people trying to campaign to get them off air and drain their fanbase by writing shit like this since quite literally before you were born. the fact that you do not comprehend satire or comedic devices such as “crossing the line twice” is not their problem, nor is it their problem that like 1% of their fanbase is stupid enough to delude themselves into thinking that this show is agreeing with them and reinforcing their beliefs. that’s a phenomenon that’s going to occur with every single comedic and satirical show that ever has or will be on the air, because those people view this show through pretty much the exact same lens as people like you, just in the opposite direction. the problem here in both cases is the unbelievable lack of nuance and and inability to engage in critical thought. south park is and always has been an outlet for matt stone and trey parker to poke fun at objectively ridiculous shit and current events, and when you’re on the air for as long as they’ve been you’re bound to get some shit wrong. their goal has never been to outright offend, it’s to be funny. offending people is a byproduct. and 9 times out of 10 if you’re the person who’s getting offended by this show, you absolutely should be, and you’re just big mad that you’re the exact type of person they're talking about. but the difference between south park and the other shows of it’s generation is that as the years and seasons have progressed they have been more than willing to admit when they were wrong, and write episodes poking fun at their absolute dumbassery from years past. they have never been above apologizing with the comedic tools at their disposal. i’ve even seen people try to label these guys as conservatives and republicans which is a baffling take for anyone who’s ever watched more than 2 episodes of the show and has 2 braincells to rub together, ESPECIALLY in recent years.

this franchise has spawned 26 seasons and counting, multiple specials, two videos games and a movie. it paved the way for matt stone and trey parker to write and produce the book of mormon, which is another long-running absolute phenomenon on broadway. they literally just held their 25th anniversary concert for south park at red rocks in colorado and there were 12k+ people there from all over the country. the crowd was absolutely losing their minds, and when the camera turned to the crowd you saw a melting pot of people of all kinds of demographics. people in the crowd were screaming and crying and throwing up and shouting “THANK YOU TREY!!!!!!” until their voices were hoarse. they still write, record and animate the show in-house with a 6 day turnaround time, as opposed to almost every other adult animated show that takes 6 months to write 15 episodes and then sends their scripts to a studio in south korea to be animated for cents on the dollar. you’d be hard pressed to find any bad or negative stories from people who’ve worked with these guys that didn’t come from a scientologist posing as someone in the industry or a scientology smear website.

this is not the show you think it is. the creators are not the people you think they are. gay people love south park. trans people love south park. people of color love south park. disabled people love south park. neurodivergent people love south park. there is a reason why this show has such lasting power and why nearly everything these men touch turns to gold. the world at large does not agree with you. it is one of the most popular shows in the history of adult animation, maybe in the history of television, for a damn good reason. and writing a little tumblr post like this is not going to change that fact.
