if Vivienne’s role of Circle Mage Politicker had been played by a white dude character, we would have had 100 fics within the first week with people’s Inquisitors joining that character for some Orlesian scheming, or making that character their mage sugar daddy, or coaxing that character to their point of view about mage freedom in an Aladdin-style I Can Show You The World montage. even if this dude wasn’t a love interest we would have had so much romantic fanart and fanfic about how complex and interesting and engaging he was

and if Solas’ role of Secret Fen’Harel Antagonist had been played by a lady of color then all there would be is fics about the mean dark lady jealously coveting a pure innocent white lavellan for her love of the Dalish and her kindness and skill and how beloved she is. even the sympathetic fics would still slide into “taming” metaphors for the relationship dynamic. and fandom would absolutely call her The Dread Bitch and pat themselves on the back for how clever they were being

Fun fact: in the 1993 animated series The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, the voice of Dr. Robotnik was performed by a famous English-Canadian blues singer named Long John Baldry. During his lifetime, Baldry produced over two dozen albums and had multiple Billboard-charting hits. After his move to Canada in the 1970s, he got into cartoon voice acting, taking on roles in shows like Star Wars: Droids, Captain N: The Game Master, ReBoot (did you ever wonder why Captain Capacitor sounded familiar?), and of course, Sonic the Hedgehog. In his personal life, he lived as openly gay starting in the early 1960s – a time when male homosexuality was still considered a jailable offence in the UK – and was reportedly friends with Elton John.

Apparently he was also the inspiration behind Elton John’s “Someone Saved My Life Tonight.” Which, boy, that’s a weird mixture of cultural legacies to leave behind…

I dunno, I think it’s pretty fantastic that “‘Someone Saved My Life Tonight’ by Elton John is about Dr. Robotnik” is a technically accurate statement. Now there’s an AMV I’d like to see!
