It makes sense that a country might want nuclear weapons to deter a certain nation that is addicted to invading, bombing, and regime-changing.

The United States absolutely laid the path for the modern, imperialist invasion of Ukraine by Russia. The USSR had stored a ton of their nukes in Ukraine, and after the fall of the Soviet Empire, Ukraine would have had the third-largest stockpile of nuclear warheads in the world, behind only the US and Russia.

Instead, they gave it all up on the promise from the US, the UK, and Russia that they would be left alone if they denuclearized.

Now, thirty years later, Russia has invaded while the UK mostly sits back and does nothing. If they’d kept the nukes, they’d be safe. The US persuaded them not to on the promise that they’d be protected. If the US doesn’t step up, we will have Ukrainian blood on our hands.

(I’m betting that North Korea is also looking at Ukraine as another object lesson in what will happen to a country that neighbors Russia if it gives up nukes.)

Every time i see this post going around, i have to bring it up again: there are absolutely corrupt firefighters. There are tons of firefighters who are racist and act neglectfully in protecting the lives and property of people of color in their community. There are homophobic firefighters who won’t lift a finger to help LGBT victims of fire. And as my mother directly experienced as a victim, there are firefighters who are only concerned with where their money comes from, and will let the homes of poor people burn down and then go through the remains busting up things that survived the blaze.

It’s not anywhere near as bad on an institutional level as policing, but there are corrupt professional firefighters, and corrupt volunteer firefighters. 

And they’re probably in your community.

additionally, so many firefighters commit arson that there is a Wikipedia article about it. according to that article, about 100 firefighters per year are convicted of arson in the US alone. that’s convictions, not how many times it happens.

there’s a really good documentary about an activist who has been working for years to get Narcan kits into the hands of EMS workers including firefighters, i think it’s just called Heroine and it came out a few years ago. anyway theres a very good scene where she goes to the local firehouse to talk to the firefighters there about how to use Narcan to save the lives of people who are overdosing on opioids. Narcan is extremely cheap, non-invasive, and involves less bother and effort by the person who adminstrates it that chest compressions or any other rescue action. Several of the firefighters look her right in the eye and deadpan inquire if they “have to” use Narcan on overdosing patients, legally, or if they can just let the overdose proceed (to inevitable cardiac arrest and death). so that was when i gave up on firefighters.

I am really bothered that republicans are able to issue repugnant laws like this and somehow the people being blamed are the doctors and the media is helping continue this narrative without any additional thought. many clip the wings of the queen, destroy new queen cells, cull queens they don't like and use bee pheromones to prevent a hive from naturally swarming or absconding. They also try and prevent mating with the African honey bee, which makes them less docile among other things. During artificial insemination of queens, drones are crushed and „spare“ queens are killed.

and commercial beekeepers even cull their hives during winter, or when they are not producing well.

Coupled with the fact that there is evidence that insects do feel pain, this is not great.

(Not to mention that honeybees are an invasive species in most places, competing with native pollinators and spreading disease)

URGENT: Congress about to pass a mass censorship and surveillance bill under the guise of "protecting children"

The Senate has been in a "do something!" mode regarding children's online safety. They're using this as an excuse to push for widespread internet censorship and surveillance. I already spoke about the EARN IT Act, which has a slimmer chance of passing with widespread opposition and a few senators saying they won't vote for it. The real threat is actually KOSA (s.1409), the Kid's Online Safety Act. It does two primary things:

First, KOSA pressures platforms to install filters that would wipe the net of anything deemed “inappropriate” for minors. This means instructing platforms to censor. We saw how these filters impacted websites firsthand with tumblr in 2018, with not only blocking all adult content but also sfw queer content such as suicide hotlines, art archives, wiping out entire blogs because they had queer fandom related posts, etc. Places that already use content filters have restricted important information about suicide prevention and LGBTQ+ support groups. KOSA would spread this kind of censorship to every corner of the internet. And who gets to decide what is and isn't harmful for minors? Oh don't worry, just every single state attorney general and the FTC, which is appointed by the president. You know, the same attorney generals that just banned gender-affirming healthcare under the guise that it "ruins mental health" of minors. This is why the Heritage Foundation was one of the first to sponsor the bill because they can use it to censor trans content, and Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee is it's co-author.

Second, KOSA would ramp up the online surveillance of all internet users by forcing websites to use age verification and parental monitoring tools. Yup, that's right. Now every single person who wants to access the internet has to upload their govt ID online to third party apps that get hacked all the time. You queer in a red state? You undocumented? You an activist? Have fun getting all your online activity and metadata attached to your govt ID.  

Over 90+ human and LGBT rights groups agree that KOSA is dangerous and updates to the 2023 version won’t and can’t address the big problems with the bill. This bill has MASSIVE bipartisan support, and the authors Blumenthal and Blackburn (yes, that Blumenthal that's pushing the EARN IT Act, and who also sponsored the RESTRICT Act and SOPA/PIPA if you remember) are using the tragedy of mothers who lost their kids to online harassment and young adults who've been traumatized online to lobby for it, and got Dove the company to use a bunch of influencers to push for this under the guise it prevents eating disorders...I wish I was lying. There are already 30 co-sponsors.

Opposition is getting drowned, and these upcoming weeks will be heavy for lobbying and they're using young people to do it. We NEED to show these senators that young people are actually opposed to this and don't want it.
