Prompt: After a lackluster 1st year as a Hero, you’re ready to go rogue. The problem is that the new guy in the team is definitely onto you.

That nerdy guy knows your secret.

You scan the briefing documents as your team leader, Mr. Subterranean, drones on. As usual, the pack of graphs and statistics look impressive. As usual, you seem to be the only one at the table who knows they’re wrong. Or, maybe, cares that they’re wrong.

“Crime is down in the 52nd ward by 30% as compared to 2016…”

You take the chance to glance at the nerd. He’s listening to Mr. Subterranean as attentively as you did when you first joined this team of the Hero Force. His hands are folded very nicely on the table and he’s watching Mr. Subterranean lie through his teeth with a very polite look on his face. His thick, coke bottle glasses sitting neatly on top of his black mask hide his eyes, but you bet he’s the only one at the table not daydreaming while the leader talks. He strikes you as a teacher’s pet.

Teacher’s pet glances at you through his peripherals. His mouth twitches, revealing a deep dimple, and then he refocuses on Mr. Subterranean. A chill races down your spine.

You’re not sure why you think he knows, but you’ve got animal instincts. If your brain is screeching at you that your plan is in jeopardy, it is.

What are you going to do about it?

“We can see marked improvement in commerce in Old Downtown thanks to the consideration and dedication shown by our new patrol routes…”

Because you’re watching the new guy, you’re the first one to notice when he raises his hand.

people are fighting over tipping culture in america on twitter and so many europeans are trying to explain why stiffing your server is praxis, actually

and it reminded me of the time I was working outside the 9/11 memorial and a european tourist came up to yell in my face at like 8am that we should all be ashamed of ourselves for charging admission to a museum of a national tragedy and when I said we depended on the money to stay open he screamed some more in my face about what a shameful disgusting government I had that wouldn’t subsidize the museum as though I personally set it up that way, and I had to eventually respond “sir, I haven’t been able to afford to see a doctor in 10 years you think I like this system???” and he just stomped away still yelling me I was a shameful person for this, the ticketing system I had no say in and also thought was outrageously expensive

anyways, just want to throw out there that if your only means of protesting an unjust system is to shit on the victims of that system then you’re not a moral crusader you’re just an asshole dressing up your assholery, pretending your cruelty is for a greater good. Tip 20% (or more!) when you eat out in america, it’s really that simple.

Same energy as Europeans who say Americans "deserve" to be shot because "we" don't want strong gun control

[video description: a man playing saxophone in front of a large pipe. everything he plays echoes back through the pipe, resulting in a call-and-response type song. the person behind the camera claps along to the beat. end description.]

a reasonable society would base their entire economy around this

GUY BUILDING THE OTHER END OF THE PIPE: the jazz ghost is back

Yall just ignoring that he set the tempo so perfect that the echo comes back ON TEMPO!!!

he’s using the echo itself to set the tempo

Mom heard about my anxiety problems and she is trying to help.

Mom: have you heard about this medication called...uhhh... xanax?

Me: (oh dear god what) yes, I have heard of xanax.

Mom: well uhh... they gave me some for my sleeping problems and when you're on Medicaid they just give them to you.

Me: (oh god where are we going with this)

Mom: well i... uhh... I think I'm gonna send you one. Just to try it.

Me: one. Just the one.

Mom: yeah.

Me: one single xanax in the mail.

Mom: yeah.

Me: you know that sending prescriptions over state lines is very illegal, right?

Mom: ...oh. not that, then.

I've seen multiple locked tomb posts about Gideon's vocabulary and how many hyper-specific or uncommon descriptors she uses and such tracing this trait to her rivalry with Supreme Nerd Harrowhark Nonagesimus. Which is very fair, but I think it's ignoring the real explanation for why they are both Like That in terms of vocab, which is that they were raised in critical proximity to Ortus.

POV you’re the king's youngest son and i just made an inappropriate joke about your virility and the size of your feet in front of the whole royal court and you want to punish me but you can’t react in anger lest the court think my jest is true

Their names were Nerissa and Katherine Bowes-Lyon. They were kept in the Royal Earlswood Hospital, formerly known as "The Asylum for Idiots". Burke's Peerage listed them both as deceased in the 1940s but Nerissa died in 1996 and Katherine died in 2014.

The hospital had no record of any visit from the family during the time the sisters were there, and they never received a birthday or Christmas card. They also received no money beyond the £125 paid to the hospital per year.

Nerissa Bowes-Lyon was buried in a pauper's grave with a plastic marker and a serial number:

The family didn't even buy her a headstone until a Channel 4 documentary highlighted the sisters' story and showed the grave. None of her family had attended her funeral.

The Queen was reported to be "hugely distressed" by the airing of the documentary.

“Can I just say something in MY defense? We had to keep our disabled family members a secret, because then people might start to question whether my family has magic blood that makes us uniquely able to govern.”

Me when I realize that the writers strike will potentially open up new waves of audience support for lower budget, independently created media that people put their authentic selves into, including less limitations on queer, neurodiverse, disabled, and poc representation

It’s always writing that people remember. Let’s see what happens when your creatives go out on their own. So much of the best art is a middle finger to whoever said they couldn’t make it.

I feel like one of theses days the joker is gonna spray Gotham with laugh gas and NOTHING will happen. The citizen of Gotham will have built an immunity from all the chemical shit that gets thrown at them.

I don’t think that’ll happen. Immunity to chemicals/poisons tends to be built up in matters of small exposures (I think, not my field) and the villains would have to be using the same basic chemicals every time, not likely. You’d also have to survive the prior exposures which seems not very Gotham~y. — Besides, it’s a fictional city and that wouldn’t make for a good story precedent to set, the citizens as immune to such a common plot point.

Now what I’d like to see is the people of Gotham building an immunity to widespread media panic about said Joker Gas.

It becomes like a pollen count on the weather. “And today’s expected Joker Toxin index is listed at 15.4, so make sure to put those breakable objects away on high shelves and put the kids to bed early, because this is going to be a bad one.”

And then the next panel shows an average family just matter-of-fact, getting the seatbelts (that they’ve installed by now) and strapping themselves in while green and/or purple clouds start filtering in through the window, so they’re safely secured when they start to have painful hysterical fits.

Every time the Joker breaks out, sporting goods stores have a BOGO sale on mouthguards.

Yes.

And like certain cities I know of down South where there’s a chemical depot, many citizens actually own gas masks and there’s sirens for leaks.

You wanna help out Bruce? Those gas masks that you and the Robins don to such good effect (until a villain knocks it off mid-fight), have Wayne Enterprises “develop” a cost-effective public version to sell since it’s such a regular issue. How to keep your giant ass company in business and make your night job easier. Hell, given how regularly it comes up, the government would pay for it. They do in real life.

I’d love to see little things about how there’s water filters commonly purchased advertised by being “Gotham-Grade” or how it was tested and proven to filter out chemicals just like was used in the Scarecrow’s last attack. Stuff like that.

Immunity isn’t likely, but companies capitalizing on the commonality of the threat, locals being desensitized to the repeated same threat situations — that’s stuff I’d buy.

I grew up in North Alabama. — We are not going in the safe room yet, that tornado cell isn’t close and it’s gonna be really boring sitting in a closet with the battery operated radio. Just leave the weather coverage running on the TV and come help fix dinner. — You learn to read how much of an immediate issue commonly occurring dangers are and you take reasonable action without flipping out. It’s part of the routine.

“Honey, get back here and finish your dinner. You heard the radio; Killer Croc is two blocks south of here and going the wrong direction. Your food’s getting cold.”

This is exactly the kind of Gothamite I would expect.

“Channel 8 says the fight with Freeze is going on in Tribeca and headed towards the West Village, your school is not going to be closed tomorrow. Now go write your report. You’ll wish you had to deal with Batman if you bring home one more D in Mr. Jones class.”

People choose entertainment based on how nondescript the name and theme are, and places with giant smiling faces/puns of ANY kind quickly go bankrupt. Street and buildings have been quietly renumbered so there are less 2s. Restaurants close on holidays and everyone has quiet meals indoors - Takeout places triple their business. Restaurants adapt by offering unnamed parallel days of celebration -

‘Come in February 17th with your significant other. Enjoy a quiet, safe meal - our dining room features no unnecessary decorations, and our name has no unfortunate associations in the world’s 32 most common languages!’

Elf, it got better.

McDonald’s tried rebranding their Gotham franchises with farm-related imagery - as in “Old McDonald Had a Farm” - in order to cut down on Joker incidents. It worked, for a while.

The trouble is… well, do you know what farms have?

Yep: scarecrows.

anyways (I say this as someone who is deeply critical of the united states government, military, unchecked capitalism, police, etc) I am SICK of people treating america as if it has no cultural value or positives so….. I love u 85 million acres (bigger than italy) of national parks. I love u harlem renaissance. I love u groundhogs day. I love u sweet tea and fried chicken and jambalaya. I love u apple cider donuts and maizes on crisp autumn days. I love u 95k miles of coastlines and new england fisherman and hand knitted sweaters. I love u halloween where millions of people dress up and give candy to strangers and carve jack o’lanterns. I love u small talk and small towns and potlucks and bringing over casseroles to your struggling neighbors. I love u cowboys and ranch hands and arizonian cactus. I love u appalachian trail and dirtbikes and divebars. I love u sparklers and fireflies. I love u mark twain and toni morrison and emily dickinson and henry david thoreau. I love u rock n roll i love u bluegrass and hippies i love u jimi hendrix and nirvana and CCR and janis joplin. I love u victorian houses and jonny appleseed and john henry and mothman and bigfoot. For y’all in the notes saying “well actually rock n roll and the food here were made by marginalized communities who were discriminated against” I hate to break it to you but you’re like two steps away from saying “well black people and Mexicans aren’t actually American the same way white people are” because whatever the reason, whether it was through oppression or not, BIPOC have influenced American culture an incredible amount and it’s so disrespectful and racist to say they don’t actually count as Americans
