"The best thing we can do with power is give it away" - On the leftist critique of superhero narratives as authoritarian power fantasies:

The ongoing "Jason Todd is a cop" debate has reminded me of a brilliant brief image essay by Joey deVilla. So here it is, images first and the full essay text below:

"A common leftist critique of superhero comics is that they are inherently anti-collectivist, being about small groups of individuals who hold all the power, and the wisdom to wield that power. I don’t disagree with this reading. I don’t think it’s inaccurate. Superheroes are their own ruling class, the concept of the übermensch writ large. But it’s a sterile reading. It examines superhero comics as a cold text, and ignores something that I believe in fundamental, especially to superhero storytelling: the way people engage with text. Not what it says, but how it is read. The average comic reader doesn’t fantasize about being a civilian in a world of superheroes, they fantasize about being a superhero. One could charitably chalk this up to a lust for power, except for one fact… The fantasy is almost always the act of helping people. Helping the vulnerable, with no reward promised in return. Being a century into the genre, we’ve seen countless subversions and deconstructions of the story. But at its core, the superhero myth is about using the gifts you’ve been given to enrich the people around you, never asking for payment, never advancing an ulterior motive. We should (and do) spend time nitpicking these fantasies, examining their unintended consequences, their hypocrisies. But it’s worth acknowledging that the most eduring childhood fantasy of the last hundred years hasn’t been to become rich. Superheroes come from every class (don’t let the MCU fool you). The most enduring fantasy is to become powerful enough to take the weak under your own wing. To give, without needing to take. So yes, the superhero myth, as a text, isn’t collectivist. But that’s not why we keep coming back to it. That’s not why children read it. We keep coming back to it to learn one simple lesson… The best thing we can do with power IS GIVE IT AWAY." - Joey deVilla, 2021 https://www.joeydevilla.com/2021/07/04/happy-independence-day-superhero-style/

1 hunting rifle per household

1 battle/self defense rifle per household (per person is better)

1 shotgun per household

1 handgun per adult (with ccw license if possible)

Should be a baseline for our communities to work towards, along with related training.

The gap between fascist attack capabilities and many marginalized communities’ defensive capacities is glaring.

Gun control advocacy is submission to the state maintaining a monopoly on violence. They do not protect us.

We keep us safe.

Until every state burns and every fascist rots.

Each Battle rifle should have a bayonet, and if you own a battle rifle, get good in CQC. I would suggest learning MCMAP (Marine Corps Martial Arts Program) which is one the most excellent fighting techniques for both bayonet and hand to hand combat, and is actually incredible when compared to Krav Maga.

MCMAP as a program is centered around actual, true combat sitautions, so the vast majority of the training is done in full Kevlar, and after the full workout, similar to Krav. It’s also a relatively short program, designed to be taught even to the most bootfuck dumbass marine, but still ranged and excellently designed for flexibility. This resource is, I believe, incomplete, but it is online, so i’ll link it here

For a more complete resource, I would suggest buying the official handbook, for less than nine dollars here

Let’s begin and build the world.

This seems like an excessive focus on stocking up on weapons and very little emphasis on all the other things that make community defense effective.

  • Before you arm yourself, read Setting Sights edited by Scott Crow. It’s a collection of essays from people including WoC about the role and methods of community armed defense. You can find it on http://b-ok.cc
  • You can’t help defend a community you don’t belong to. Make friends with neighbors. Learn what their skills and hobbies are. Work together on projects to improve your neighborhood. Working together on installing solar or wind power generators for your block to share is a great way to build trust/connection, develop skills, AND make your block less vulnerable to infrastructure failure. Or if that’s too ambitious, help plan a block party.
  • Defense relies heavily on communication. Get your neighbors interested in HAM radios, see if some of them will study for an operators license with you. Get a call sign. Get in the habit of radioing your neighbors to say hi. Get familiar with how far your signal travels. Develop some goofy code words and in-jokes. Get a set of little Baofengs on eBay (if you get a bunch at once they should be like under $20 each) learn to program them and give them out as holiday gifts. YouTube is full of tutorials for this kind of stuff.
  • Physical fitness is important. I don’t mean being a big strong tough guy, I mean if you ever actually need that battle rifle (or gd forbid, that bayonet) you’ll have already spent probably hours crouched behind cover, muzzle up, waiting. If you have to change to a different defebsive position you’ll likely need to duck-walk to it to avoid exposing yourself as a target. You can train for this by holding something heavy and about the length of a rifle (metal pipe for example) and building up endurance for how long you can hold it in an extended position as if it were your gun. Duck walking is easy to practice- squat down, and then go back and forth across the room keeping your ass as close to the floor as you can. You’ll look stupid. Once you’re used to all that, start doing it in all your gear.
  • Gear? Oh yeah, you’ll want a vest that holds extra magazines for your rifles and a belt that holds extra magazines for your handgun. You’ll want at least 4 rifle and 2 handgun mags, plus an emergency first aid kit, powerful flashlight, ear plugs, some extra bandannas, and whatever else you may need in a serious emergency. This all has to be strapped to your body. If you want armor, you’ll have the weight of that too. Do all your training in your gear. Practice ducking, rolling, crouching, jumping, running up and down stairs, doing push-ups, etc. in all your gear. If you have a large chest, a binder (like what trans men and some lesbians use to make a flat look) might help, but take care to choose one that you can safely breathe and move around in for a long time.
  • You’ll also want to stock up on ammo for any firearm you have, and know what type is for what. It’s better to habe fewer guns that you train with more often than lots of guns you don’t practice with. For handguns, full metal jacket bullets are required by most ranges for training, but hollowpoints which expand on impact are better for self-defense in urban areas bc they’re less likely to penetrate, say, a wall and hurt some bystander on the other side.
  • If you’re carrying for personal self-defense, have a clear understanding of when the point of no return has passed, and do not draw your gun before that. That means always ALWAYS have a way to de-escalate any confrontation and try to have a less lethal self defense method available, like pepper spray. Never brandish a gun unless you intend to use it right then and there. Until that point, keep it concealed or if open carrying, keep your hands off it. Handguns should be kept in proper Kydex holsters that fit snugly and cover the trigger well completely.
  • Have people you can call who are comfortable babysitting your guns if you have a mental health issue or other reason to get the guns out of your home quickly. I train with a group that will take guns away from members no questions asked and return them on request. This makes people feel safe and not judged when they are going through a rough time to reach out for help. Going to pick up the guns from a comrade also gives us a chance to see how they are doing and ask if they need anything else, make sure they have eaten, done laundry, taken care of their pets, etc.
  • Always follow the 4 rules of firearm safety:
  1. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you shoot
  2. Don’t point at anything you don’t want to shoot. (Even as a joke. ESPECIALLY not as a joke. This is not funny, ever. )
  3. Treat every firearm as if it’s loaded at all times and point it in a safe direction always. Don’t rely on the safety switch!
  4. Know your target AND WHAT’S BEHIND IT

Community defense is a larger concept than simply self-defense. Learn the theory, build the neighborhood community, take good care of your body and be safe!

A couple podcasts I recommend on community defense are Red Strings and Maroons and Live Like the World is Dying

HEY ARTISTS!

Do you design a lot of characters living in not-modern eras and you’re tired of combing through google for the perfect outfit references? Well I got good news for you kiddo, this website has you covered! Originally @modmad made a post about it, but her link stopped working and I managed to fix it, so here’s a new post. Basically, this is a costume rental website for plays and stage shows and what not, they have outfits for several different decades from medieval to the 1980s. LOOK AT THIS SELECTION:

OPEN ANY CATEGORY AND OH LORDY–

There’s a lot of really specific stuff in here, I design a lot of 1930s characters for my ask blog and with more chapters on the way for the game it belongs to I’m gonna be designing more, and this website is going to be an invaluable reference. I hope this can be useful to my other fellow artists as well! :)

Did you find this helpful? If you’re able, maybe buy me a coffee please? :D

Aaaaand could maybe be helpful for writers too!

Let this be your sign to watch older movies right now please

And ISTG if I see one argument that you "don't like movies by problematic white men". Oscar Micheaux has films available as far back as 1920's

Alice Guy has such an extensive filmography starting in 1896 that it is genuinely overwhelming. Including the first film with an all african amercian cast in registered history.

Start caring about history and stop hiding behind fake progressive morals to excuse your ignorance.

This person has done THE most impressive job I have ever seen compiling links to many films and books for free

This is an impressive list of film noirs you can watch for free

TubiTV is my favorite streaming site, it has a spectacular list of older films, and you don't need to even create an account to watch them

Also the amount of great older movies available on youtube always impresses me. Every time I can't find an obscure movie on torrent, it is usually just there on youtube. Mosfilm has been remastering their most classic releases and uploading them there.

Anyway, be curious! Search "films about <thing you like>" on your searching engine of choice. Chances are someone made a movie about it no matter how weird and crazy it might seem!

I know I jest sometimes, but films are legitimately great! There is so much to discover out there, it keeps me always excited for the next great thing I can discover that I had never heard about! Please, shed you chains of hollywood fast food, there is so much beauty just at your reach

If I can recommend you do 1 low-effort thing for the love of God it is this:

Keep 5 cards in your pocket. One will say "yes", the second will say "no."

If you lose your voice, or lose speech, or want to make a dramatic embellishment at the right time, it is an elegant and efficient solution that is right there at hand.

But what if people question you from there? "Why do you have that card? Why would you do this? How long have you had that in your pocket?" For this, or whatever else they say, the third card: "I don't have a card for that."

"What the fuck," they ask. They laugh. They are bemused. You bring the energy back down with the fourth card: "I have laryngitis. I've lost speech. My throat hurts". Whatever you expect to occur.

The joke is over. Rule of threes. Now they are curious. They wonder about logistics. "How did you know I would say that? Is everyone so predictable?"

As a three-part bit, nobody ever sees the fifth card coming.

"I have powerful wizard magics."

Gets them every time

Why do my interests in canning, couponing, and homesteading overlap so often with blogs with titles like ‘The Obedient Housewife’?

Like, I’m like, “I want to learn to make soap and farm,” and suddenly I see 500 “traditional family” motherfuckers like no you are mistaken. I am just a simple lesbian anticapitalist looking to limit my consumerism as much as possible.

‘these fun crafts will keep your kids occupied until your husband gets home!’ no i want a clothespin crown for me

As a nerd who homesteads, let me share the data I have gathered!

First is my megalist of homesteading-related links I’ve gathered over the years. I’m a mod over at r/homesteading and this is where I’ve put a lot of good sources (not all, admittedly some are still sitting in my bookmark folder waiting to be added). The search function at reddit is wretched, but there’s also been lots of good things I’ve shared there too. Please note that many of these sources are not actual webpages, but PDFs. That’s not an accident, PDFs are where you find the really good in-depth stuff.

Many of my sources are from the Extension Service. They won’t try to relate to you based on your lifestyle or sexual identity or religion or whatever, but due to that, they also won’t be alienating you either.

image

The Cooperative Extension Service (US only) exists in all 50 states and in most counties. It is taxpayer funded. The Extension Service exists to help people become more self sufficient, for farmers to be more successful, for people to be healthier, for kids to be well adjusted, to figure out how to grow the best plants in your area, etc. Some county offices even offer cheap classes in things like gardening, canning, soap making, and they’re taught by people with training in these areas (I once heard a great talk on composting from a soil scientist that way). Do you want to know what type of plant something is? Do you need help figuring out a plant disease or pest issue? You can now contact them online and get great info.

I HIGHLY recommend checking out your state’s extension service website, because they do offer different types of information, depending on what is grown/raised where you are (and how well funded they are). My county extension puts out a monthly gardening newsletter, which includes a helpful ‘this is the time of the year to do —-’ part.

Here’s an example from North Carolina - check out that left sidebar

Here’s an example from California - this website is HUGE so dig around

Here’s an example from New York - they have a calendar at the bottom, showing how they have things like hydroponic and urban agriculture workshops coming up.

Interested in raising animals? Penn State Extension is really really good. They have tons of free materials and courses available online, some I pulled for my megalist at the top of this.

National Center for Home Food Preservation - they cover the important aspects of food safety, and also have some recipes. Many state Extension Service websites will have lots more recipes.

If you have kids, check out 4-H programs for them. It’s part of the local public school system here. If you’re homeschooling, you can also purchase their science-filled educational and self sufficiency materials (materials are divided by age ranges - Cloverbud Member: ages 5-8, Junior Member: ages 9-13, Senior Member: ages 14-19). One of my coworkers is in 4-H, she’s still in high school, and last year she raised an award-winning heifer.

Congress grants the money for funding these programs, and they’re connected with various universities. There’s a level of cutting edge scientific knowledge and academic rigor you don’t find in blogs or even most books. There’s LOTS of homesteading books filled with outdated information like ‘till the earth every year’ hell I still have older coworkers who do it and I’m trying to figure out how to gently tell them that they’re destroying their soil that way, and that there’s better methods now, methods grounded in science.

Hope this is helpful to someone out there.

Check your state university system for the extension service - it will definitely be associated with agricultural schools!

(My brother retired a couple of years ago after 30 or so years with the extension service out of UC Davis. His field was ornamental horticulture, which includes home gardens .)
